I had to Replay it ...i dozed off on the first viewing....i'm 64 too!! I used those foam rollers too to paint signboxes... If you put a light tack coat on first...brushing anywhere your roller can't get into then rolling as best you can to hide your brush marks...then let it tack up but not dried too much...you can put a heavier coat on to get a thicker finish without running ( tack coat helps hold the paint ) and it can look almost like a spray finish...takes a few times to get it figured out but once you do you can paint it without spraying ( especially without a paint booth or like you said in a area you don't want overspray or fumes )... Great video.... I was tired from days of yardwork It wasn't boring... Even the greasing was entertaining...

Hey Keith, you can put automotive enamel hardener in that paint, I don’t remember the part number off the top of my head but I’ll get it for you. It makes the paint dry three times faster and is as hard as nails. Also the gloss is better, and is less likely to lift or wrinkle if you re-coat. The hardener is valspar 4625 enamel hardener.

If you could put the name and number here, a few more would like that. 👍 Thanks in advance.

I don't recall your previous shop having a sandblast cabinet. What the heck are you doing? Trying to be a full service job shop, that does a total rebuild? I really liked seeing you reuse that ball bearing. Especially this low speed bearing that had no wear. I'm your same age, I'm still amazed at how well you are as a prime mover. I wish I could find a riser for my Wells-Index. I wonder how much more that affects the compliance of the machine when side milling.

Used to own a cottage on Bayberry Lane, just on west side of Swan Rv off Lower Cty Rd. Is there a classic wood boat builder/restorer anywhere near your shop? Often visited them to see the work they were doing / exceptional craftsman / brothers, if I remember correctly. My time on the Cape was back in the 70's and 80's. Love your show / does get a tad technical from time to time, but that's okay.

Hi Keith, Buffy is making good progress, and looking just like she is out of the showroom. A question for you, have you added the riser or was it on the machine originally? I have a bridgeport copy (not as many Bridgeports in Oz as in the USA) and I have found the limitations of the standard height. 150 mm (6") risers are available here to fit them, but they seem incredibly expensive at over $800, but after seeing you assemble Buffy they must have locating supports inside for the X bracing to sit on as you bolt it all together. Regards Dennis.

Hey Keith, love the videos, long time armchair machinist (currently rebuilding some tired iron and saving for a bigger shop). Was wondering when you were putting the fittings in for the standoff could you have just oiled the raw cast iron after you blasted it to try and keep them rust free longer? Very amateur machine rebuilder here, so just wondering if you think that's a wise idea with hidden parts like that or if that's not a good idea! Love the videos, Thanks for all the gems and wisdom

Keith, nice work as always. One question or suggestion; if you would buy a bearing with the same outside diameter and height, and bearing capacity at least the same, but the inner diameter bigger than you need for supporting the z-axis. Is a bushing with a collar not an escape for not buying the original? Collar for the extra height of the inner ring and the inner bore matching the spindle size? I didn't dive into the data but could this work as a replacement? Best, Job

I had to laugh, the handful of bearing grease immediately took me back about 40 years, to the film "The FJ Holden" which was produced at the height of the late '70s 1950s craze down under (Happy Days etc.). The protagonist was restoring/hotrodding a 1955 FJ Holden (a car similar, but smaller, to a Chev Fleetline Deluxe, made by the Australian subsidiary of GM), and on his birthday his mechanic's shop workmates grab a big handful of wheel-bearing grease and shove it down his trousers to coat his 'bearings' as a coming-of-age hazing... :) I think the film can be seen on YT if anybody wants a taste of 1970s Australia (viewer discretion is advised :) ).
@chrisgreig56283 жыл бұрын
That's cool , last time i came across a FJ Holden , 32 years ago Magnetic Island , it was black ,Greek Owner ( Nick The Greek ) from Melbourne , it had bullet holes in it , i know why it had the holes , gutless motor , couldn't get going fast enough , i changed the oil and gave a tune, that was as far as i was prepared to go for this customer . But now years later i really think that he shot his own car to give himself more street cred . it was a very green time .

Re washing bearings, My friend does it at his plant, the room they regrease them is cleaner than an operating room. when you clean a bearing before grease,, Rinse the balls and race with something like acetone or brake clean and light warm air blow off without spinning the balls, as mineral spirits or cleaner tanks leave a film on the surface of the ball/race, and the oils in the grease cant do their job 100%
