Keithley 2000 multimeter 6.5 digits 1998 test teardown

this is a really wonderfull multimeter from Keithley
main design from 1994, this one is from 1998,
Voltage Refferance LT SL40057 IC-527 = LM399
same is also used in Keithley model 2000, 2001, 2010,
ADC is dual slope made with CPLD and optocoupler interface,
This unit it is very accurate and very stable, Much recommended.

I use auto generated subs, I go through them myself, but i am far from perfect at finding all errors, so if you find errors worth fixing, please comment (or PM) with the TIME in the video you saw the error, i will be happy to fix it. This also applies to the Danish version.

I picked up one for around $200 not working, someone had tried to fix it, but I think their solder skills were not up to the task. Just replaced the front opamp they put in and double checked continuity 2 component nets out from it. Came good - lovely unit, a keeper for sure. The old units have a dedicated sense of purpose to them the newer units do not really pull off.

I own a 2000 myself and I still love it - thank you for the review. I reverse engineered a 20 channel scan card for my set - not that I need it daily, but the relay clicking is such a sexy sound. For example for recording the discharge curve of a 16s battery pack where one specific block had degraded. The funny thing is how the 20 channels are showing on the display as only 10 channel segments are implemented. So channel 11 is channel 10+channel 1 and channel 20 is 10+9+1 😅 You can see the indicators during display test or at power-up. The isolation barrier is necessary to have the analog section floating while the interface section is grounded (GPIB, RS232, Trigger I/O).

According to people on eevblog, you should replace electrolytic capacitors in this era of Keithley meters. They are known for leaking and destroying the circuit board.

the counting is normal in DC. Its got a very high input impedance and measures the voltage on a sniff of an oily rag from 50 feet away...

The device clearly shows the advantage of NOT having forced convection (fan) cooling. Imacculately clean and NO dust to see anywhere

exactly, i prefer fan less products that is correctly designed with good thermal ideas all over, to keep the power parts cold enough without a fan.

The transformer location is a weight distribution choice, for when they are rack mounted. The 2015THD is a lot heavier, despite being the same basic meter, but with the added audio signal generator and THD measuring capability. PS: The front/rear selector switch isn't the best; you can sometimes pick these up cheap when they throw error codes because it needs a blast of contact cleaner

High input impedance is very good for measuring voltage on Weston standard cell without damaging it - because the current you draw from the cell is small.👍

I also have Muirhead D-845-D Reference cell, and it is in very good shape (1,01896V) and stable.For me, it is quite amazing how that chemical stuff in it can hold voltage on the same level for maybe 50 years or more.👍

you can still get the 2701 model from new, it is about 2200 dollars, so if the used one looks nice, and all features works, and still perform to all specs, then it is a good deal, you need to visit someone with a much better meter, to prove its performance, and this way check all is with in calibrated readouts. else it is not worth much to you.. you must be able to thrust the readings.

you could get lucky to find stuff like this on the used marked, it will still be a very good instrument and for the cost out perform much new equipment.

Maybe it's just me, I very much prefer a instrument like this with real buttons and display over this modern trend of LCD touch nonsense. By the way, I restored two of these meters, both had the same failure. The three capacitors directly next tot the voltage regulators where all leaky and the electrolyte started eating the board. On one of them I had to do some mayor reconstructive surgery to get it back to life. So I would highly suggest replacing those electrolytics if that wasn't done already.
