The Pegasus is very muddy under these conditions. Its great for lead articulation and produces really rich chords even under full distortion but it is not a metal pickup. I know this video is old but I love this great service Keith does for us SD fans. I also wanted to see if my prediction of the JB sounding the best (it did) was true. The SH-5 custom is definitely evil as well. It's just hard to beat that clarity paired with actual dynamics that you get from a JB. Most modern passives are voiced to sound more like the ultra EQ'd and compressed actives. The 6 string shootout with Naguls and Omegas (both of which sound sick af) is an amazing comparison too.

Though while this is a great video to show and compare the various models, a description of what gear was used would have also been helpful. Because the woods of the guitars used is going to play a huge factor in one's decision making, as is what Keith and West were running thru for that tone vs. what the average guy at home is running thru... For example, the Full Shred & Invader may sound more balanced in a brighter sounding guitar, while the Custom and Distortion had been too bright... I mention this, because I am considering a few different combos for pickups for a guitar, and have mixed thoughts on all of them because the guitar they are gonna go in is a little brighter than usual for a basswood body. Therefor, I think the Custom might be too bright, and the Invader might be more suited for what I am looking for. Or the Retribution could be too bright and need something warmer... I just don't want to get a set of pickups, not be happy with them, and be S.O.L. due to only having 21 days to try and test them and return them, when it's going to take a week for me to get the pickups shipped to me, leaving me only 14 days to play and try them. And an even shorter time if one doesn't play every day, or have the time/opportunity to play every day (due to chaotic work schedules, life events, etc...)...

This ladies and gentleman, is why I have the Duncan Custom SH-5 in more of my guitars than any other pickup. Mark Holcomb's Omega recently took over as my favorite passive bridge pickup but the Custom was my go-to pickup for the longest time and still is. It's such a fucking awesome sounding pickup. Tons of snarl, very tight and it cuts extremely well. I love that it gets such a full sound without being overly aggressive on the top end or really barky in the mid range like the JB.

Definitely interesting because of the 6 string version. Normally i would say the custom/hybrid and definitely want to try that Jason Becker pickup in a 6 string. Keith which guitars are these? And would you be able to recommend a Good 7 string under $1000 I'm in the UK so ones which wouldn't have to be imported is best, I'm looked all over and I cant seem to find any 7's I like and you are the god of 7's so ya know.. xD

*I wish they would have included the 59'/Custom Hybrid. I love its articulation and cut...*

Sounds like a handy idea that would catch onto me! imagine In-store pickup testing~~~~ just how cool would that be, allthough I figure I'm a relatively niche market

Gentlemen, your riffing is just incredible. It really goes down to my merrow if I dare to say so.

Are all the lead parts on the bridge pickups too? Harder to tell the difference between the lead sounds. Big difference in the rhythms though.
