You are SO right!!! “You keep honing, and then you hone some more”. In my opinion thats the magic formula for great edges. All stones are not alike and without trying and trying you will never get to where you truly want to be. Thanks for your video and insight Mr. Johnson.

Love my coti! I have only used two; one was a loan from a friend, which made me buy the one I have. I have no idea what the vein of the one I have is, and don't care at all. It puts a slamming egde on a blade by itself. Or if I want I can finish on my Escher or an Arkie and it will be even better. Love the videos. As you can see, I'm moving back through them again. It's good company while I put steel to rock!

Merry Christmas guys. Nice to most always see the positivity here on Keith' channel. I'm neck deep into Jnats, and really enjoy them. Correct me if im wrong, but does coti slurry not break down like a Jnats? Refinement is a combination of dilution and reduction of pressure?
@KeithVJohnson17 жыл бұрын
Coticule slurry most definitely does not break down. I personally do use dilutions and a lighter touch are part of the finishing process. I also do that on Jnats....we use finer Nagura on Jnats too... the break-down of Jnat slurry is clearly evident to me, but not everyone believes that to be true.

What was that manual you mentioned? I love your no bs approach. Repetition with observation can be a great teacher.

I thought I answered this - sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I think YT ate my response actually, lots of weird stuff going on with my channel lately. Anyway - the booklet I referenced was Iwasaki's "Honing Razors and Nihonkamisori"

Don't do it, It's a black hole! Lol.

Keith V. Johnson I have done it on three different occasions. But is it insanity if it’s different stones and razors? BTW that cotiule looks like absolute garbage I have an address you can send it to dispose of it properly! And your welcome😉

Keith, I have this 6x2 BBW that just put one of my best ever edges on my hard Thiers-Issard C135 steel, and that is compared to the edges I've put on my past coticules. I've also used another BBW that was junk and didn't do anything for my edges, but this one and one other that I've used have put amazing edges on my razors. I'll let you borrow it to try it out and do a video on it if you want?
@KeithVJohnson16 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, thanks for the offer, but I'm buried in new stones to test as it is - plus I'm not really a big BBW fan. But I thank you for the offer and it's always good to hear when someone's really enjoying their hones.
@nickfanzo6 жыл бұрын
I've only had a few bbw hones that worked for me like that. The rest were painfully slow and ineffective.

When slurry clumps together like it did on the jnat, is that magnatism from the iron content in the stone?
@KeithVJohnson17 жыл бұрын
I don't believe the iron content in Jnats is all that significant. The Kawa is prone to having a ton of Iron oxide, but we don't hone on that.
@jasl73587 жыл бұрын
Ok i just thought that was pretty neat when you first raised the slurry. I've seen it do that after I've been honing for a bit but not immediately like that. Gorgeous stone btw. I dont expect to see that one on ETSY lol. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Have you tried the Canadian novaculite stone?
@KeithVJohnson17 жыл бұрын
None of the ‘new’ stuff from ebay, no. Years ago I had samples of Cambrian Novaculite from eastern Canada/Maine and Vermont that were from Cambrian deposits.
@thelastron7 жыл бұрын
MasterofPlay7 eBay type "Royal flint canadian novaculite". I have one it really does polish the stone to mirror and the shave is good.

I've gotten my razors sharper using the BBW side of a natural combo rather than just using the yellow side.
@KeithVJohnson16 жыл бұрын
Any natural stone could, theoretically, be superior than another, so there’s that. And sometimes, any given user can ‘click’ better with one stone and not another for any number of reasons. But, historically, BBW has always been proven to be much coarser and slower than yellow Coticule.
