@KeithVJohnson112 күн бұрын
Thank you for the first laugh of 2025. No offense taken, it's impossible to be offended by poorly written and unintelligible whining. In order for me to take unsolicited opinions about my work seriously, there needs to be some credibility and accountability. Not surprisingly, your channel has zero content, and zero followers; that translates to zero credibility. Sharing unqualified opinions, like yours, in this context, is the equivalent of pissing straight into into a headwind. Presenting one's opinions with acceptable grammar and punctuation is critical. Part of what you wrote makes no sense; "youmake" isn't a word, for example. Many more things devalue the comment too; it's a literary dumpster fire that equates to zero credibility. Also, for an opinion to have merit, awareness of the subject is a critical concern. My channel is based on me having opinions and sharing them. Turns out that the concept is doing well. Many people follow, subscribe, and comment positively. So I believe what I am going to do is to keep on doing things they way I have been. So, in 2025, I will make even longer videos with an even higher percentage of opinions in them.
@DasDaniil11 күн бұрын
@KeithVJohnson1 as you say. I, for my part, am not looking for any followers, I do not do my own channels, and english is not my 1st language. May you have an awesome 2025.
@KeithVJohnson111 күн бұрын
The point was that you attempted to sound like you know what you are talking about when in reality you have zero experience in making video content, or maintaining a YT channel. That, basically, makes your criticisms pointless. I know many people who's first language isn't English, and they execute paragraphs and sentence very well. They don't write gibberish. Maybe work on that before you go around failing miserably at offering unsolicited advice on topics you have zero first-hand experience with.

My tenyou is quite a bit softer than mejiro. They feel different under the blade as well. I like them all and my best results have come from BTMK then finisher nagura. But I am also lazy and will go BM (ho ho) then finisher with good results. On a rainy day with a pretty razor I will run the gamut.

Generally, most but not all of the time, Tenjyou will be softer than Mejiro but not always. There are no rules so we can pick and choose what to do each time - keeps things from becoming monotonous. Happy Honing!

Once I figured out my kit and had consistent shaves, I was able to explore other stones (coticules and Arks) and razors with more confidence and good results. Your videos (and gear) have been invaluable; however, as you say, honing and shaving were key.

i followed your feedback principles and im honing well and the shave is good. but the razor has a more and more pronounced frown i dont think im doing anything wrong. stones are leveled well and the save is actually nice because the razor hugs my face. dont know if i will tape it to correct the frown or not. dont really know why it has such a frown. ever have this problem or know what im doing wrong. thanks keith your the man.
@KeithVJohnson116 күн бұрын
No way to know what you are or are not doing right/wrong... Typically, normal honing doesn't create a frown. If you got the razor with a frown and the geometry is bad then continued honing would exacerbate that issue. Can't diagnose long distance though. Best of luck turning the frown into a smile!

1. Did I understand it correctly that working on sandpaper ~220 makes surface on a nagura that is rough enough for creating slurry on a base stone? 2. Is this technique of creating rough surface on a nagura applicable for base stone? In other words how rough should be the surface of a base stone for good results?
@KeithVJohnson1Ай бұрын
There are no absolutes. Try stuff, see what works best. I usually finish lap base stones with a worn 400x Atoma. Maybe 600x w/d. It's conceptual, smooth minimizes friction, coarse enhances friction. You have to find balance.
@sashashkodich9505Ай бұрын
@@KeithVJohnson1 how do you think does the surface roughness of base stone or nagura influence the size of particles in slurry to some extent?
@KeithVJohnson1Ай бұрын
I find that a finer finish on a base stone minimizes its capability. Coarser finishes don't seem to allow the stone's full capability to be utilized. I use the same diamond plates to lap or surface Nagura. As for particle size, these are Natural stones, there is no 'grit'. Of course you don't want chunks floating in the soup. Think less, hone more. Works better that way.

Great material, Keith; thank you. I have a coticule stone that produces a very sharp edge when I'm finishing the razor under running water. Razors catch hairs on the fly, but the shaving is not smooth, and I have the impression that it is too sharp. I want to ask for your advice on how to smooth it out while keeping it sharp.
@KeithVJohnson1Ай бұрын
It's unlikely that your edge is 'too sharp'. More than likely, your bevel set and midrange work need refinement. Smoothness and sharpness are established early on. There's nothing wrong with finishing under running water but typically it's only done to alleviate the effects of 'auto slurrying'. If your stone does auto slurry, try honing 'uphill' under running water to minimize the artifacts caused by errant particles.

Got a question you've probably seen a lot before, so i'm sorry if i'm just blind here. But i'm looking for a decent mostly inexpensive finisher, i'm coming from knife sharpening, so i have everything i need for bevel setting, i just don't own much of polishing stuff, the razor i use is a simple carbon, so it should be fine with any stone. I don't mind spending, i just don't want to get a 200$ dust collector.
@KeithVJohnson12 ай бұрын
You didn't really ask a question. I am guessing you're looking for a finishing stone recommendation though. Best thing you can do is have some edges honed on different stones to see what those finishes are like and then you'll have an idea about what to look for.
@attila52212 ай бұрын

Hi Keith. Could you elaborate a little about those "black Thuringians" you showed at the end of the vid? I have several of those in 1x5x.5 inch. They seem a little harder and courser than my blue/green and dark blue Thuries...but they cut faster. I use them right before finishing on my thuries. They were sold as Swedensteins...is there any truth to that assertion? Thanks.
@KeithVJohnson13 ай бұрын
Not much to elaborate on really, those in the video were from the end of Thuringian hone production after Escher had to find a new location to quarry. Schwedenstein stones were something else, coming from much older strata. Typically not as fine as the Escher type hones.
