As you may be aware, Cohran records are few and far between. Aside from the more recent reissue of his Zulu 45s collection, 'African Skies' is his first new record to be released since his 1969 Malcolm X memorial. This fact only serves to cement its lofty status as "a nuanced portrait of one of the most visionary musicians of our time...". I’m glad to have met the sons of Phil Cohran otherwise known as Hypnotic Brass Ensemble who has toured with Prince and The Gorillaz. Also glad to know Phil Cohran was apart of Sun Ra’s Arkhestra which solidifies the spiritual feeling behind this music. Safe travels in enteral essence Mr. Cohran, your music has impacted me in ways you can’t imagine. Learned so much about Chicago culture from your family. We recorded this in the Studio in March 1993 - I perform on the Concert Harp here. This Composition evolved from our practice Sessions when I first moved to Chicago (October 1990) to study with Kelan Phil Cohran. I remember watching Cochran (at a Chicago Auditorium) I can't remember in the late 60s perform his incredible song 'On the Beach'. I was 14 and a black revolutionary, remember that? Since then have never, I mean never, been able to find it after the 33 rpm album I had was destroyed. I searched all over NYC and NJ in the 80s and now I guess KZbin can't get it back either.

Now this is the "Kind of Blue" of 1993. Interestingly, Miles Davis said of Kind of Blue that the sound he wanted was that of the "finger piano" (probably an African Thumb Piano) but he didn't quite achieve it. Well I suspect that Phil Cohran achieved that sound that Miles Davis was trying to capture on Kind of Blue. This is one amazing record. Like Kind of Blue - everybody should own a copy of it.
