In the 70’s growing up we never knew of this thing called dyslexia… my father just called me stupid. I carried that cross through my late twenties till a supervisor recognized similarities between me & her dtr. Wonderful woman named Wanda had me tested, & gave me guidance/skills to adapt to this new found information. So grateful to her❤! I now knew there wasn’t really anything wrong with me.. and I wasn’t “stupid” .. I just learned differently than some ppl & there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! That was 30 yrs ago❤❤

My first year teacher was to lazy to see that I was and just labled me uneducatable and was surprised I could even read. My dyslexia is mild and pre that comment I was top of the class for reading but really knocked my confidence wasn't till year 4/5 my mum got me tested by then damage done and even after "special needs" class didn't give specific help to each individual treated us all the same so what was the point wasn't till I was 31 that I found my way to revise and it to stick. No teachers ever advised revision methods only handing out revision booklets (practice test type books)

He is now taking his CNA board as one of the youngest in our state at just 17. He enters the EMT program next year as a senior in HS and the 911 dispatch program. Let your kid feel that YOU believe in them and they will believe too. ❤❤

I’m an author and have dyslexia. It was horrible. I remember throwing temper tantrums at the dining room table because I couldn’t spell. While at the same time, I could write just fine thanks to a QWERTY keyboard. You have to find a way that helps you. For me, it’s the patterns that letters create while typing. I couldn’t handwrite the word answer until I was in my twenties. I could type it in and 1st grade. I wrote my first chapter book before I was 10.

My son now 35 has a similar disability. In written language. In the 5th grade while sitting at the table trying to do homework. I got so mad thinking he wasn't trying. I said son read this to me. He fought it. Then it hit me. I said son can you read. He said no mama. I was furious. Called the school. Why is my son in the fifth grade and nobody told me he cannot read? They had him in resources too. Not one meeting or not ever told me he had issues in learning. Next step. Can I have an IOP? Was told no. NOOOO. We don't feel it nessisary. I took him to his pediatrician and got him a referral for genetics testing and got him his IOP. He can spell orally. But when it's written down it's a different story. Arrangements. Anything below a 70 he gets a second chance orally on homework and test. Always scored above 90 after that. Only child out of 4 to walk the stage for graduation. The rest got there GED. Still has trouble with written language. But makes management within 6 months wherever he has worked. Proud of him

@@melanieroberts2221 that’s awesome! I was never given an official diagnosis but it is very much genetic in my family. My grandma was always ashamed of her reading and writing, and my dad also. I was given old school spell checking machines and even tried tape recorders. For me it was the pattern. We all just need to be given ideas on how to work around. The amount of times I was told to sound things out and that phonics were my best friend could earn me enough to live on for a year. I got a modified GED due some other issues but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and your son should be to.

My niece had dyslexia but it was not discovered until she was taking multiple AP classes in high school. She was so smart, she was able to learn and compensate until her workload got too heavy. It is important to get your children evaluated early. They won't know anything is wrong but they can get the learning tools to deal with the dyslexia and thrive.
@ravenm6443

I didn’t learn I have dyslexia until I was 20. Not only dyslexia but also dyscalulia too. To be fair, it wasn’t totally obvious even though I struggled with reading. But it was mostly a speed issue. I wish I had known more about dyslexia growing up because maybe I would have recognized it. Looking back, it’s obvious to me now. I had a situation in high school where the pages of the book I was reading would go blank. I also add and subtract letters and can read it wrong multiple times until it registers. What’s infuriating, and I’m sure many with dyslexia will agree, is being told we don’t have dyslexia because some of us are able to spell and read or compensate. Dyslexia isn’t a one size fits all. It’s different from person to person. But by no means does it make anyone less intelligent. There are so many brilliant famous dyslexics out there!

I am a member of the "Dyslexic Tribe". Diagnosed in the 2nd grade. I am now 65 and retired from a very successful business life. The toughest part about dyslexia is how other kids react to you being different. I was able to make it through without much trouble because my mom loved me so deeply, she did everything in her power to support, encourage, and dilute the taunts from kids. I think a big mistake is made with dyslexic children when the "system" separates them from standard activities in an effort to give them "special" help. I hated having recess at a different time and going to classes with just 6 or 7 kids.

this hit me hard - thank you. i am a 72 year old woman with add. i found this out when i was 61. the inability to focus and concentrate, alone, was debilitating. i faked my way through elementary and high school and then somehow went to college. i could not do the work but told my parents i was going and would fake my way through easier classes and just did not go to the rest. i could not do this after some years and dropped out. wasting my parents money. at 61 there was a pbs program, with the information in a book called, "you mean i'm not Crazy, lazy or stupid?" i bought the book and it was written for add adults. it helped me believe in myself. i always knew i was smart but couldn't prove it. 3 years later my dr. informed me that there was one other type of depression med. i had not tried - and it worked... i was stunned. i'd never experienced what happened. i could focus and concentrate. i still have to work at it. until then i had read around 20 books in my life and don't remember much of what i read but in the next 2 years i read over 20 and remember them. thank you Henry Winkler for the validating words. dyslexia is part of this and a lifetime of frustration and humiliation is gone...

OMG! don’t be discouraged. I learned that I had dyslexia in my early 30’s and turning 60 soon. I worked so hard in school and thought I was stupid. I was so relived when I finally understood what was « wrong » with me. My mother was a teacher and did not realize about the dyslexia as it was not known way back then. I managed to work my way up to the executive level as an admin assistant, let me tell you that it was a lot of organization for the brain. I’m so proud for all of my accomplishments specially that I worked in my second language during my whole 35 years service. Dyslexia is like living in an other world and the beauty of it, is that you can do what ever you want once you know about it 🌸

I have mild dyslexia, inherited from my dad. I sometimes interchange my p's, d's and b's when writing. And I get numbers mixed up. It usually takes me several tries to dial a number correctly on a phone. Between reading a number, saying it in my head, and dialing it, typing it or writing it, something gets backwards in one of those steps. I'm not very good at spelling words. I can't spell them out loud from my head. I'd have to write them down first. But I remember years ago telling my boss I have dyslexia and she looked at me with so much shock like I was an alien. I was surprised to learn there was a stigma around it. I actually want to be a writer someday too. I get a little frustrated sometimes with my mistakes and having to do things over again, but I can't imagine how much harder it must be for people who have it worse than I do.

When I was diagnosed with dyslexia my Mom told me, “You’re so smart, you taught yourself how to read. The way the teachers were teaching you didn’t work for you, and still you figured it out all on your own. You’re a whole other level of brilliant, baby.” My Mom was an early education teacher, she wasn’t just blowing smoke up my ass. She knew what she was talking about. For anyone else who didn’t have that response, I hope you hear it now and recognize the truth in that statement. It is very likely you taught yourself how to read, and yes that’s a whole other level of brilliant.

Yeah It's tough growing up with dislexic traits especially during a time of less awareness. I often felt embarrassed as a child and early adulthood, similar to what Henry shared, I dreaded having to read and or spell in front of others it's still hard today in terms of the harsh judgment around being able to read, write, and spell perfectly but back in the day people were harder on you upon notice that you didn't easily pick up reading, you were assumed lazy and sometimes scolded due to the assumption that you skipped out on study work when you simply couldn't understand or fully comprehend the work. I'm relieved that times have changed and teachers have become more educated and we now have books available on the topic to help kids navigate dislexia vs my time. I wish I had a book to encourage me I did receive a little encouragement on occasion from a few who seemed to understand but not enough at that tender age as many knew little if anything at all about dislexia nor other learning difficulty thus I struggled in silence as many children did back then, again I'm relieved times have changed no child should have to navigate learning difficulty without some level of emotional support and information.

I am a special education teacher whose husband, son, and daughter. My daughter is about to get her degree in English Literature. She reads really well but struggles to read out loud. If she knows her class requires reading out loud she practices ahead of time. Her writing receives some of the highest scores in her class and she has made the deans list 3 times. Despite my efforts otherwise she grew up calling herself dumb. She is an extraordinary person who has achieved through hard work, tears, and sweat. My son struggled academically throughout his school years and asked if he could not go to college. Although he struggled he received awards for leadership and teamwork. He is now a plumbers apprentice, working his way through various exams and certifications with the goal of one day opening his own business. I am very proud of them both. One final word for people who have children with dyslexia. What your child needs isn’t pity, but solutions. There are things that parents and families can do to help and there are wonderful qualities that are prevalent in children with dyslexia. A core element many times is the ability to think creatively, outside the box. These are the people who innovate and create!!

Please! Can we NOT talk like this about women - or anyone - crying?! We are beautiful in our full body, heart, mind and soul reactions to life and love - which is what this was, to my eyes and heart! PLEASE stop focusing on women's (and others) outward "beauty" - as if we (even celebrities) need to look "glam" all the time! So sad to hear Kelly internalize that b-s- as she says "my makeup artist is gonna kill me!" - no need to project violence on ourselves over superficial "beauty" standards. As Henry Winkler said "You look good. Nothing is ripping(?)" - in other words, nothing is breaking or bad, all is well. All is well indeed - just 2 beautiful humans having a beautifully heartful interaction, aka sharing and spreading the love, which is what I believe Ms. Kelly Clarkson is truly all about! ❤❤❤ Let's elevate our thinking and our expressions (thru social and all other media) and perceptions, please, friends! Thank you for listening! ❤
