Kelly Clarkson's Team “When U Move I Move" [The Voice] - SINGER REACTS

This is my reaction, analysis and breakdown of Kelly Clarkson’s team on the voice performing “When U Move I Move,” by John Lennon. This was on Season 21 of the voice where the top 11 artists of that time were revealed and Kelly performed with her remaining four competitors. I believe these remaining four were Jershyika Maple, Hailey Mia, Girl Named Tom and Jerry Rosado. This beautiful arrangement is a somber ballad featuring a mix between simple harmonies, octaves and unisons. We get to hear a great mix of vocal timbres from these singers and interesting choices of vibrato. The arrangement is very lovely and this ensemble is extremely together; growing, beginning phrases and cutting off, and they obviously dedicated a fair amount of rehearsal time to getting this tight. Kelly seems to sing the lead part, really using her upper register and showing off her great control. I really enjoyed this performance, it was interesting hearing some contrasting voices and stylistic choices. I am usually not one for the slower, wider vibrato, but I do think it was appropriate in this setting.
I am a jazz & R&B vocalist, baritone saxophone player, vocal coach and music educator. Hope this video was educational and brought to light some often overlooked lil details!

Haven't seen anyone point this out but the high note she hits is a polyphonic note/tone! There's a deeper tone to it!

The girl in the bronze dress is part of the group Girl Named Tom that won the show on team Kelly. This is a John Legend song that Kelly picked and arranged for the show.

Hi Erika. I watched this performance when it originally aired. Personally I wasn't into this song, because it felt a bit "slow" and the constant changeup in singers did not allow me to get into the personal "feeling". However, your detailed breakdown, made me understand how tight this song was beautifully performed by all the different singers. Thank you, for using your musical knowledge to help me understand this collaborative performance.

Great reaction! I love your professional option on all their voices and your funny commentary. This song is a John Legend song. The group of 3 (bronze dress) are siblings and they won this season of the Voice. Their harmonies r amazing, their name is Girl Named Tom. Should check them out if you get a chance.

haha, that "classical music vibrato" reference is so true. Opera singers for instance always go overboard with their vibrato, it's almost comical how pathetically they show off their big vibrato in front of a stiff audience. To me, that's so cringy and fake. I mean, every voice got natural oscillation, but if you sound like a siren, that's just overkill. Keep up the good work 👍 Your videos are always insightful. I feel like getting singing lessons for free 😊

It’s a style! That’s how western artists sang hundreds of years ago and it’s what made the foundation for our music and singing today! I wouldn’t call it overkill, it’s just a different technique that is very old compared to these more modern styles. I have so much respect for opera singers I went to school with many and it is such a difficult technique requiring many hours of practice. & I find some pieces beautiful even though it’s definitely not my thing and I can’t listen to too much of it. But we are all entitled to our own thoughts and opinions. Thanks for the comments and I’m sooo glad you’re enjoying my videos :))

@@erikatorresmusic_ I did not intend to come across as a narrow-minded philistine, which I probably am, but maybe I have to elaborate some more on my point of view: Music always speaks to both, the mind and soul. However, some music or rather some art speaks more to the mind (like mathematically constructed music, e.g. dodekaphony) while some other music comes more from the heart, e.g. blues, soul (true to the name) and some music like the super mario theme song is just purely entertainment. Now, while I consider classical music to be more an intellectual and artifical thing (just look at how stiff the audience listens to that music) I consider something like jazz to be music that appeals more to our bodies and emotions, e.g. Screaming J. Hawkins, whos performances were anything but intellectually constructed. With that said, classical music as an "art" always sounds artificial to me (true to the name), just like classically singers exert their vibratos. It's difficult, true, but it still sounds "fake" to me. Now, I'm not saying that today's music is less fake, the use of auto-tune is just as fake. So, in conclusion, pick any genre and time period and you'll find good and bad music. I'm not the one to decide that, but I've made my point.
