That last part was so epic. All the sustained high notes, clear and resonant, while performing in the middle of winter. Performing at the inauguration is really a test to all singers. The ones who sing 100% live and gave great performances are the true singers!

To anyone who criticizes Ms. Clarkson: 1) She is singing a 4/4 rendition of the piece, at least at the beginning; 2) The temperature is frigid, which greatly affects both singer and, especially, band; 3) The band that is accompanying her is in a different universe; 4) She is standing directly in front of the President of the United States and countless dignitaries; 5) She is being broadcast live to literally a billion people; 6) She must be quaking in her winter boots; and 7) SHE ROCKS THIS PERFORMANCE. Plus, her hair looks great. This is a historic performance.

+Ella Segal - If we oppose him at every turn even when he does something useful (like blocking the Trans-Pacific Partnership or indicating that he wanted to have a positive relationship with Vladimir Putin---someone who has nuclear weapons at his disposal), then we lose all legitimacy and will be thought of as just over-reactive whiners. If we oppose him just because he's a bigoted creep without addressing the substance of his policies, then it's wasted energy. Also, I think the hypocrisy here is really striking. Why didn't anyone oppose Obama when he put people in his cabinet who were not necessarily experienced or had the requisite skills for those positions but had donated heavily to his presidential campaign? Where were the people to oppose Obama when he made Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy permanent? Why hasn't their been any outcry over Obama expanding Bush's drone program (it has been reported by more liberal news outlets as having killed innocent civilians 90% of the time rather than the intended terrorist target---so there is no such thing as a "targeted airstrike")? This is a disastrous program to be using and it is making us less safe because it is fostering such hatred and resentment and fear of us. Now this drone program will be handed over to Trump... Why haven't people been up-in-arms about Obama bombing some of the poorest countries on the planet?? He expanded Bush's wars to SEVEN countries. So now they include: Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia and Pakistan. Why weren't people marching to oppose Obama when he expanded the National Security Agency's powers to the point where all Americans are now being spied on and our metadata is being stored for anyone to look through? In his last week in office, Obama made it so the NSA could share this information with a bunch of other agencies without any privacy controls. Obama also made it so governmental agencies can skip over due process and habeas corpus... this has been a disaster for investigative journalists and has undermined every American's constitutional rights. Where were people when Obama allowed his Secretary of State to go to many different countries to essentially sell fracking, which emits methane---a greenhouse gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide. So not only does fracking contribute to our problem of global warming, it also has destructive effects in the communities where it has been utilized. Why weren't more people upset when Obama failed to jail the bankers who perpetrated fraud and helped crash the economy---leading to many falling into poverty and losing their homes. Currently 50% of America makes just $30,000 or less per year. 70% of Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck. Many Americans are what's known as "food insecure" in that they don't know where their next meal is coming from. Why weren't people upset when, despite having a Democratic majority in Congress, Obama neglected to institute a single-payer healthcare system which could've allowed coverage for ALL Americans and allowed the government to be able to negotiate prices so that the pharmaceutical companies cannot continue to price-gouge everyone. A single-payer, universal healthcare system is what every other modern nation has. Meanwhile the U.S. pays more per person for healthcare outcomes that are no better and sometimes worse. In the U.S. we have many people who end up bankrupt because they can't pay their medical bills. Instead of a single-payer system with price controls, Obama instituted a Republican policy to appease the health insurance industry. The Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare was originally known as (Mitt) Romney-care and was largely written by the Heritage Foundation---a right-wing think tank. When we have such crappy, supposedly left-wing politicians who continue to cater to big business, the military industrial complex and elite financial institutions, is it any wonder how a lot of people decided to vote for Trump, who was offering himself up as an agent of drastic change, as an outsider to the status quo? Now we're all stuck with him... it's a freakin' disaster and the Democrats seem to see nothing wrong with what they've done that helped lead to Trump being elected in the first place. Now that he's here, though, don't undermine yourself by opposing absolutely everything Trump does. Actually pay attention to policy and take steps to address specific policy legislation. Don't just oppose him because he's a scumbag.
@MC-ig3ci7 жыл бұрын
+Ella Segal - I agree that Trump is bad, but I think that "1000x worse" is a bit of hyperbole. And, once again, it does no good to rail against someone when there is no specific policy legislation to affect, which is what the women's march was basically all about. It was frustrating to see so many people spend their time to organize and come out for a message that was so jumbled. It was basically an emotional reaction without an actual plan for the future, they were protesting Trump being the president because he's awful, but that is not a specific policy! And it de-legitimizes the movement to oppose him categorically like you're talking about; that kind of thing will set you up for failure because you'll end up boxing yourself in by thinking that _everything_ Trump does is bad; it's a great way to lose all credibility. Trump striking down the TPP is a positive thing. Trump limiting the effects of lobbying in our government is a good thing. Trump wanting a congenial relationship with Putin is a good thing... some people were risking putting us all in danger by being so damn antagonistic towards him and Russia. Sure, it's going to get worse, I can see that... but don't you see how Obama set it up so Trump can basically do whatever he wants in several crucial areas? THAT in and of itself makes Obama a bad president. I mean, instead of passing legislation in his last week to expand the NSA and allow it to share all our private information without any privacy controls, Obama could've walked back some of the legislation he did that will now allow Trump to spy, target and kill people without any due process (Obama has done this himself, he used drones to kill a 16 year old boy who was an American citizen just because it was "suspected" he "could potentially" be a terrorist). These are scary times because Obama has expanded the presidential powers so much...and now Trump inherits all that. Additionally it should be noted that the economy under Obama is only slightly better than it was, but we're still limping along. It's been widely reported that the banks are too-big-to-fail yet again---more so than the last time and so another economic recession or depression is likely imminent in the next few years. Obama claimed to have improved job creation, but millions of people have left the work force because good quality job opportunities continue to shrink. We've entered into what's known as a "gig economy" where the jobs that were created were mostly part time, temporary and insecure with little to no benefits. So many people are what's called "underemployed" and struggling (it bears repeating: HALF the country lives on less than $30,000 a year... 70% of people live paycheck-to-paycheck and would go under if they had a surprise bill of $500 they had to suddenly be responsible for). More people are unemployed than what the government's numbers report because they don't factor in these millions who have left the job market who have stopped looking altogether. Obama did nothing to control the college debt bubble---it has only continued to grow, with more and more people defaulting. College tuition has increased at many times the rate of inflation, it's ridiculous, and Obama has done little to rein that in. This actually benefits that industry because they make a lot of money off the government and off late fees and interest. We basically have the government colluding with the for-profit college industry and it has been a detriment to students and it is now a threat to our economy. Obama put people in his cabinet that messed a lot of things up due to their inexperience and/or corruption. His secretary of education wasted a ton of money without getting any kind of positive result---it turned out to be a disaster and the guy had to leave. He's the one who proposed the "Race to the top" legislation... He was asked to resign by the American Federation of Teachers. Obama put people in charge of governmental departments who turned out to be corrupt----they engaged in pay-to-play schemes----and didn't pay their taxes.... many ended up resigning. Hillary Clinton not only engaged in pay-to-play schemes with the Clinton Foundation, but she also was a big contributor to destabilizing Syria and Libya with her penchant for radical regime change and selling weapons to dictatorial foreign leaders who donated to the Clinton Foundation. It has been reported by more liberal news outlets that the middle east is now worse than it was under George W. Bush. So allowing all this does not make Obama a good president. Also, an audit showed that the pentagon under Obama had mismanaged funds with $6.5 trillion unaccounted for. We are spending trillions of dollars of tax payer money---that should've been spent re-building our infrastructure, maintaining clean water systems, making education more affordable and instituting a single-payer healthcare system----on wars that the American people largely do not want; most people in this country can see that it is not improving things and they don't want their government to be terrorizing foreign people anymore. This has not improved with Obama at the helm, despite his early assurances and it's because the military industrial complex is very powerful and has bought off politicians on both sides. I don't know how anyone can say that Obama was "a good president" when he's unnecessarily killed thousands of innocent people and turned 7 countries to rubble. At one point last year, we actually had bombed these people so much that we ran out of bombs! Obama advertised himself as an agent of peace... what a crock. There are people on the Nobel Peace Prize committee that have expressed the idea that Obama should give his peace prize back because he and his state department have been so hawkish and destructive. What people on the left are just starting to wake up to is that the people in government are not doing much of anything on behalf of the people anymore. The Citizens United legislation has made bribery of politicians LEGALIZED. This occurs on BOTH sides of the aisle. The Democrats are now a corporate party, which is why people who had voted for Obama twice switched to Trump this time---change is _desperately_ wanted and needed by so many (make no mistake, I'm not agreeing that Trump will actually bring the necessary change, just that he advertised himself as such and was running against the biggest status quo, political establishment insider the Democrats could've run). Because he is part of a corporate party, Obama didn't push for single-payer when he could've passed it with the Democratic majority he had going into office---the pharmaceutical and insurance companies would not have liked that. Obama could've passed a sweeping clean energy initiative that would've created new jobs and helped the environment when he first came into office with the Democratic majority he had. Obama didn't jail the bankers even though they committed fraud on the American people and caused many to slip into poverty. People are now up-in-arms over Trump's cabinet like it's some weird anomaly for an in-coming president to put people in there who paid for his presidential campaign---Obama did the same thing! That's how it works now.... Obama had Wall Street people that he appointed, people from Citigroup, who had heavily donated to his campaign. These politicians don't care who is actually right for the job, they're going to appoint their donors and friends. It's all such crap.... We should not give anyone a pass here just because Trump behaves like a stupid creep. Just because someone like Obama _appears_ to be compassionate, elegant and intelligent does not mean that he shouldn't be criticized or protested against. But the left totally dropped the ball and went to sleep during his administration because they thought he was such a great person and they neglected to see what he was doing when it came to actual policy. I cried when Obama became president, I was so happy.... but he quickly turned out to be different than what he advertised and he turned his back on the American people so that corporate powers could benefit. The big point is that appearances can be deceiving. If you look at the state of our country----that people are now so desperate that they will elect someone as ridiculous as Trump---and the state of the world, it is now worse than it was before in several important ways.... Obama did that. Please, please stop believing in the myth that Democrats are somehow better than Republicans. They all take money from elite banks, multinational corporations and the military industrial complex. It is up to _US_, the people, to push for a constitutional amendment to get the money out of politics and use only public money to fund campaigns (go to www.wolf-pac.com for more info'). It is up to US to pick out the specific policies----like single-payer healthcare, or a green initiative to create jobs and build renewable energy infrastructure----and push for them in any way we can. It is up to us to get involved with our local governments and not allow corruption to reign anymore. Here is just one way to get involved: justicedemocrats.com/home-2/?.DbzB_JSuQ6u6dZl0XxJRfw.2 Have you heard of the saying that states: when you engage in a war or fight AGAINST something that you actually make it stronger? Well, I think we've seen that in many areas this approach is counter-productive. So instead of committing to a war AGAINST Trump, commit to a deliberate plan to start to dismantle the system that has allowed him to come to power in the first place. And that can't happen if we continue to be in denial about what Democrats as well as Republicans have done for decades to uphold and expand that system.
@MC-ig3ci7 жыл бұрын
+Ella Segal - I was talking about the upper echelon of government where policy is most affected. Most of those people are in fact caught up in the money in politics---it is a huge issue... for a lot of the more elite, establishment politicians collecting donor money and/or keeping their donors happy is a huge part of what they do on a regular basis. Once again, it is vitally important to understand that the Citizens United legislation has made _bribery_ _of_ _politicians_ _on_ _both_ _sides_ _LEGAL_. It has been shown in different studies and polling that the American people have much less of a chance of affecting policy and getting what they want/need than the corporations and banks do. We are effectively living in an oligarchic society where the corporate powers decide most of the more vital policy issues, to their own benefit. I don't know how you can argue against this by bringing up anecdotal evidence in the form of people you know personally---that is not at all relevant to the conversation we're having. Of course there are good people in government, but they are mostly on the fringes or are marginalized when they refuse to play the game. The biggest problem we have in this country is that too many liberal democrats---supposedly smart, open-minded people---cannot see the money in politics issue as the destructive force it actually is; it affects virtually _every_ _other_ _policy_ _decision_. The denial of this issue means that we cannot get our government back so that it actually benefits regular people because we continue to be at odds with each other over other issues that would fall under the influence of donor money so they are not really getting at the root cause of the problems. Most people in this county have now turned away from the two major parties because they can see the systemic corruption---the biggest voting group in the country are now independents. The major parties are shrinking... if the Democrats would step up and stop taking donor money and start working for the people again, you would see a resurgence in the party and it could be very powerful. Instead the Democrats have turned into Republicans except for a few social issues---that is why they have lost so many governmental positions in both the federal and local governments. People are fed up and can see how weak these people are... the Democrats have not fought for the people. I helped get Obama elected and he quickly became a huge disappointment---most of what he ran on ended up being false advertising. He was not an agent of peace, instead he has contributed to the war problem and it has been unnecessary in many instances and, of course, horrifically destructive. He was not an agent of change: Obama did not resolve a lot of the systemic issues we have that would actually help with corruption in our government or with our economy long-term. I thought he understood what the problems were and was going to fix things... but ultimately that would not have suited his donors. It's a very important point to get across: many people feel that they were duped by him and ended up turning away from the Democratic party altogether. Trump didn't win because he had so much support (his actual supporters make up only a small fraction), he won because the Democrats LOST so much of their base of support. Democrats who had voted for Obama twice turned away... NINE PERCENT of registered Democrats voted Republican instead out of frustration that the DNC had proffered such an establishment candidate. This will not get better unless we face up to the way money affects our politicians and their policies. We are on the same side here. I in NO way said we shouldn't fight back. But fighting back against a symptom of the problem instead of its root is often ineffective, especially long term. I am advocating that we fight back in a systematic way that is not about emotional reactions to someone's personality and is instead focused on the SPECIFIC POLICIES. At the time of the Women's March there was only ONE policy that was on the table---repealing the Affordable Care Act, that's what was going on that week. So why was the march framed in such a gendered manner when healthcare is important for everyone---both men and women? Why was the message so all over the place? Why wasn't the march about the Affordable Care Act? It just ended up being a distraction.... I am advocating that we fight back in a way that takes into account the corruption at a systemic level. I added two websites where you could go to learn more and to get involved with something that can make a difference. Yet instead of getting involved, you respond with a total misrepresentation of my previous comment; it is so frustrating.

+Ella Segal - Yes, we are on the same side... and I am a woman, too, so I hope very much that you will listen to what I am really saying here and consider very seriously the points I'm trying to make. Progress cannot be made if we have people who are in denial about the root causes of our problems. As to your level of involvement: I was just going by what you said yourself. You said you were done discussing things online, that you're going to do whatever you can to make a difference while at the same time totally ignoring the websites I posted to you that ACTUALLY COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE. So I meant "instead" of getting involved where it could help---i.e. the websites I listed---you seemed to be fed up and wanted no further part in the conversation. Understanding the issues and knowing what to do about them is important. I can't really agree to disagree with anyone if their side is not based on facts. There are many things about the world that are subjective and amorphous, but there are also plenty of things that are rooted in objective facts that cannot be disputed, so agreeing to disagree is not then relevant. If your level of involvement is marching in the Women's March, then hopefully you might know that it is not sufficient and your opinion that protests get things accomplished is just flat out wrong and generally not backed up by evidence. Here are two good articles explaining why that is the case: www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2014/04/why-street-protests-dont-work/360264/ www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jan/19/womens-march-washington-occupy-protest It takes a lot of patience and work to really understand what the core, fundamental, root issues are surrounding our broken political system. That's harder work than just walking in a march for a day. You will fail to make a difference if you continue to gloss over policy specifics because that is where real change occurs. Real change occurs by doing boring work on a regular basis and doing it persistently. To learn more about what is really going on and to get involved, please visit these sites: OurRevolution.com s3.amazonaws.com/ak.represent.us/images/StatePeriodic_big.gif AnticorruptionAct.org Represent.us

This particular arrangement is by Kelly Clarkson, her musical director - Jason Halbert, and Staff Sgt. Ryan Nowlin of the US Marine Band. The 3 of them sat and arranged this a couple days before the inauguration. Saturday, I think.

I know how great and prosperous this land is compared to others first hand and while she has her faults and she’s not always perfect the Lord blessed me with having been born here and who am I to question him 😅. God bless America ❤️🤍💙 & God bless my beautiful home state of Texas!

Dude, I will never forgot the reactions people had in my neck of the woods during this performance. People were breaking down crying, harmonizing, screaming and jumping up and down in sheer joy. It blew my mind how much it resonated with them; I’m not being stereotypical either but it was genuinely cool to see so many black people get emotional listening to Kelly.

I don't need to show awards and platinum albuns because i expressed my opinion based in VOCAL PEDAGOGY. I your opinion is that her singing is great you should also get some arguments about vocal technique istead of talking ad hominem. Pathetic.

My country, 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims' pride, From ev'ry mountainside Let freedom ring! My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills, Like that above. Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees Sweet freedom's song; Let mortal tongues awake; Let all that breathe partake; Let rocks their silence break, The sound prolong. Our fathers' God to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing. Long may our land be bright, With freedom's holy light, Protect us by Thy might, Great God our King!
