Usually "winners" don't really win anything and they're usually nobodies after they've won. It's better when you come third or fourth because there's a better chance that you'll become more famous. But it's quite odd though because you would think that being at first place would make you "more popular and successful" but that's not the case at all but of course there are some exceptions though! Such as Kelly Clarkson!

There will always be exceptions, but generally, runners up always do better in these competitions. I don't think there's the restrictions or winner obligations to be fufilled so 1D were free to sign up to a label pretty quickly and the rest, as they say, is history

If I am not mistaken, Kelly & Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert the last ones for AI as David Cook & David Archuleta have not been active in industry for so long to keep their momentum in music industry. As for the last one on X factor US is Fifth harmony. Then in UK it's Little Mix and of course most prominent of all One Direction.

I find it so weird they aren’t allowed to ever mention other singing competition shows by name on the Voice. American Idol I kind of understand since that’s been revived, but X-Factor hasn’t been on the air in the US in almost 10 years. It’s not even running any more in the UK where it started.

Their original competition was X Factor, not idol. They both started on the same year and all they wanted was to be better than the X factor. Often times airing on the same time of the week. Later the rivalry started with Idol. Idol was too big for them to go head to head at first.

Well we all know that Niall Horan is a good singer now, but in my mind? I can see why we assumed they won because of their success, but it was the British X Factor so of course we didn't see it here. However, quite often, the winner of these talent competitions doesn't get very far and the runner up or someone further down the line does better. If you look at American Idol today, very few of the winners made it big.

Winning those shows is the worst. The contracts winners have to sign is so insanely against them for what they have to put in. Being in the top 5 but not winning is great, you get all the PR, and if you are any good you will get a deal yourself. Id say because of their age 1Ds first contract probably wasnt great, but I would bet with each album thereafter they got more and more of the pie.
