This is such a soulful performance of such a great song. RIP KJP, and thank you TomCPH for posting this and keeping it available.

hearing about his death hit me more than it should have, given that I've never met him. KJP and his beautiful music got me through some tough times dealing with depression and I'm forever grateful to him for that

I was friends with this man. We hung out in Vancouver, WA in the 80s and played jazz... drank coffee... watched Letterman on NBC... taught lessons at the same music store... went to the local used record shops to buy jazz we hadn't heard yet (on the cheap)-we had little cash. I recorded in my studio his very first tape of songs when he switched from fretless bass to slide guitar. The guy could play everything! I had a therapy session today and spoke of my ups and downs with knowing Kelly... He was always so incredibly deep into music - we had many a midnight discussion about this or that record, or somebody's tone, or their approach to finding the magic. Kelly had some beautiful pain in his head and his heart... I miss him...

You are most fortunate to have known him and to share so much together.

He had a great laugh. And he was always learning and sharp as a tack! ...and he could sting like a bee, too. You would have liked him, Jim. He had a great handshake too!

I can watch and listen to this guy over and over. I want to know, who's in charge of the crap we are force fed to listen to on mainstream radio and television when there are diamonds out there like this guy? Love It!

Kelly Joe is just fantastic, with his own style. Haven't been listening to him in a while, so this was special.

Never heard of him before today. He showed up as a KZbin recommendation. I've watched this video three times already. He's a mix of Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. Absolutely great.

@opticalomgirl the likes of Kelly Joe Phelps, James McMurtrey And Dave Alvin continually restore my faith that there is still golden, beautiful, emotive music and songwriting out there instead of the industrially produced autotuned shite that seems to be the current norm. You just have to be prepared to make some effort and look below the murky popularist surface. There is still plenty of gold to be found in all genres, even if the mainstream media seems to ignore it.

@opticalomgirl Mainstream radio and television content is what majority wants. Personally i enjoy being different from armies of soulless robots. Thank you Tom for a great post.

Love this song. Somebody put a version up w/o the very audible glitches please.

He has distinct Waits body and head movements while performing..watch some of the older Waits videos...and his phrasing reminds me some of Dylan. He's not a copy of either by any means.
