Kelly Slater Talks Memorable Milestones, Eliminations Change The Tone At Margaret River I Post Show

The mood shifted at Main Break with the men’s first major batch of eliminations being dealt in heavy fashion. Surfing celebrated the GOAT Kelly Slater after World No. 1 Griffin Colapinto ended his ambitious run in the Wild West. Marquee performances from 3x World Champ Gabriel Medina, 2x World Champ and two-time event victor John John Florence, 2023 World Title runner-up Ethan Ewing, and 2022 event winner Jack Robinson put more masterful work in with Medina and Florence set to battle it out in the Round of 16. Plus, the Pupo brothers plead their case to stay in the hunt for glory of their own but will have to square off in the Round of 16 to decide their fates. More scenarios await with heavyweight bouts on the horizon alongside the return of all-important women’s matchups when the competition returns.

Kelly inspired literally every surfer in the world for 3 decades! I remember the 13 years old me starting surf the year after Kelly won his first title. Me and my friends sneaking copied tapes of surf films of the momentum generation to check the moves back in Brasil. Later watching Kelly battling the new generation of great surfers my age, such as Andy, Mick and Parko. And now I'm a 44 year old veteran following the tour and watching a whole era closing. Grateful for witnessing it. And you bet Surfing would not be half as popular and have so many talents nowadays if not for guys like this gentleman right there. Even the late Brazilian evolution in surfing owes this guy.

So stoked to be at Margaret River today and to see Kelly's walk along the crowd after his heat today. He must have been signing autographs and doing selfies with the crowd for about an hour. Legend. He and I even chatted about astronomy (not astrology) - an interest of both of us.
