Kelly Slater: The Power of the Waves

Ten time World Champion Surfer, Kelly Slater, takes us back to his childhood, describing the era in surfing that he grew up in and how it differs from today's generations. He shares his personal thoughts on what surfing has taught him as an individual.

Kelly and a lot of other pros showed up at my hometown in Florida and surfed all day. Everyone just chilled on the beach and watched some of the greatest surfer to ever live. Truly amazing to witness in person.

everytime i see surf videos and people talking bout surfing in this manner a tear comes to my eye, it´s just more than riding a wave! it changes everybodies life to the better!

A Champion can never rest on his laurels! It's great to see Kelly revisit the past to connect with what motivated him. Kelly can 'earn' that 12th title this year. Then when he's ready to turn the page on the competitive surfing part of his life he's got a lot to look forward to (i.e. his music, wave pool designs, etc.).

Growing up with him and his brothers, I was really blessed, you know there still my friends and we all joke and jive each other just as when we were young. Surfing with Kelly was on another level....cocoabeachforlife

I'm learning to surf, and the place I'm now in the long ladder of surfing "learning-hood" is my mind is learning to be at peace, just relaxed... be it a closeout that launches me into the air or a gorgeous smooth drop down the open face followed by a long ride. I'm finally reaching that state of mind of calmness, of leaving everything else behind :) I started surfing at age 28

the day he feel free and relaxed is the day that he will understand what surfing is about! he may have unmistaken technic but he can't feel it! let's all pray for that guy to find the meaning of surfing he deserves it...

Something that gets me, is that the best surfer in the world seems more down to earth than the rest. He doesn't have a super thick surfer accent and doesn't use too much surf slang. Other surfer's seem like they try to talk a certain way just so everyone knows their a surfer or something. Maybe I'm not explaining it right but it makes sense in my head.

I've always been intrigued the way surfers talk about surfing and how much the learn form it and how it effects them spiritually... it's almost like a really fun religion LOL!

Now that I'm a millionaire I don't worry about losing like I did when I was scraping by on $10,000 a year. Kelly is the greatest surfing legend of all time, but money is definitely the reason he doesn't feel so much pressure to win anymore. Oh, and also the 11 world titles. Damnit, which is it? The money or the 11 world titles? Hmm, probably a bit of both.

Kelly is not a fan about talking about surfing. He almost does it for a living. His real interests lie in other things. Surfing....isn't really a job, but its not something he has to freak about about any more
