A great interview. Probably the best ever Kelly Slater interview. Great job Tim Ferriss. I've been following Slater's career from the Black and White days (1990). Also a long time fan of JRE, but his interviews with 3 of surfings most interesting subjects, Slater, Shane Dorian and Laird Hamilton, were all rubbish. I think Joe Rogan needs to overcome his fear of the ocean and take up surfing. This in contrast taught me some new aspects of Slater's character and psyche. Just a few days after this interview and the GOAT is now at my home break in Padang Padang, Bali.

19-ish minute, Kelly mentions Adult Children of Alcoholics. This is HUGE! I just learned of ACA and Al-anon in the the past 18 months and it has been a game changer for me, my relationships, and my approach to life. If only I had learned twenty years earlier. All I can say is GAME CHANGER! Thanks Kelly, and Tim, this was great!

Kelly is highly mistaken on his recollection of the best day of his surfing life when he stated that NO ONE GOT THE VIDEOS of the best day ever. Kelly had Charlie Kuhn towing him into wave after wave while we filmed from a tree fort that Cory and Shay Lopez built for a treetop angle of the river mouth. As a skater originally, having spent my entire youth, into my late teens, enamored with skateboarding, I hate seeing surfing turn into skateboarding. That’s why I like Kelly’s top to bottom surfing so much: it’s about reading a wave and flow! Tom Curren is the guy who made surfing a true art, and Kelly pushed that art to its limits. Now guys are just street skateboarding on a surfboard. It’s lame. JJF is the greatest crossover hands down, but look where skateboarding on water got him: INJURED! Medina is just a skateboarder on water, race hard, drive on front foot, laugh ramp it. :-/ Jordy is a soul surfer.
