Hi Kelly, as someone who has gone through a complete stomach removal, I can tell you that, while it takes time to adjust (a couple of months) to the very small portions 6-8 times a day, Ray will need to set timers to do so, because there will no longer be a sense of hunger but must maintain a steady diet and source of nutrients to survive. The doctor will likely refer him to a nutritionist, and I would suggest a consult with one as soon as it has been determined that they will be doing this surgery. You and Ray and even the girls will need to gain a new perspective of what he will and will not be able to eat. If his stomach is removed, his body will still be able to digest his food, in very small portions. They may tell you that there are some foods he will no longer be able to eat because they will make him nauseous and/or will cause great pain. But if they are able to determine this surgery is an option to give him the best chance to eliminate his remaining cancer, it IS possible to live without a stomach and, after getting used to a routine and NOT experimenting with food or drinks that he is forbidden to have, it will become his new normal. I have lived without mine for 18 years. He’s young and that plays a big part in them even being willing to consider this surgery. I will continue to pray for all of you. Have faith, have hope, and have a positive attitude. Lean on God for ALL you need. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are the Holy trinity and are your greatest hope. My daughter's MIL has had her stomach totally removed, she leads a pretty normal life.. eats what she wants, just more frequently, she goes every 6 months to the Cleveland Clinic for check ups and anything else she may need, including treatments and small surgeries, hang in there, it can be accomplished and overcome!!! Kelly, I am a cancer patient and have been dealing with stage 4 breast cancer since 2014. It is a journey that no one wants. I am what they call treatable but not cure able. Im in the same boat with uterine cancer. Early diagnosis was no help because my heart is so damaged with heart failure that surgery is a no no for me. They gave me 7 weeks of daily radiation. It damaged my bladder and bowel. They arent like they used to be. When the disease acted up again I underwent D&Cs with implanting a hormone coated IUD. We did that 6 times. Its been 18 years of this and Im still here! Keep fighting every day! 😉

Kelly, I don't know, but the surgery he would have seems like my gastric bypass that I had three years ago for weight loss. They left my stomach inside of me, but it is disconnected and doesn't function. The esophagus goes into a small pouch that they make and is directly connected to the small intestine. I eat smaller meals and have to take supplements to ensure my body absorbs everything it needs. I didn't eat solids for a while afterwards, but it is absolutely doable! Anyway, I am praying!

Our oldest son was 25 when diagnosed with stage 4 Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 12 years ago. He is healthy now. January 2023, our youngest son was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. A member of my family is post total gastrectomy and did chemo before and during surgery and continues. The odds were not in his favor. He is now 1 1/2 years post surgery. Without a stomach a person does not experience hunger. Eats about every 2-3 hours. Intake of fluids essential to prevent dehydration . Some diet modifications like no concentrated carbs but overall this 70+yo is going strong. Prayers. The angels are with Ray.

Continued prayers for Ray and your family. My grandfather had stage 3 stomach cancer in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. He had the majority of his stomach removed. I remember the doctor saying he had less stomach than a person with weight loss surgery. He had to eat smaller meals throughout the day. He also had to make sure he chewed his food well, and he couldn’t drink while eating. He had a rate and difficult to test cancer, but he beat stomach cancer. He had more residual effects from the treatment than the cancer itself. Your son is much younger than my grandpa was at the time. The main thing is the patient’s frame of mind. I will continue to pray for Ray’s healing and that he remains encouraged. May God send his angels to wrap him and your family in their wings of safety. I pray that y’all have safe travels to and from his appointments.

In 1972, when I was 16, I was involved in a horseback riding accident. My liver was lacerated, and after trying to repair my liver through four surgeries, they finally removed over half my liver, including the entire right lobe. In 1972 that surgery was unheard of, but 51 years later I am still living a normal life. Thank you for the update Kelly. You guys have been through so much and I pray that God will continue to be with all of you but especially Ray. Being a mom myself, I can’t imagine what you’re going through but I do know how devastating it would be to get this kind of news. Stay strong in faith. My son had surgery on April 25th. It was a " second chance" (he was dying) surgery. He had been turned down for a transplant and another surgery because of the severity of his condition and they said it was too much of a risk. He ended up having to go out of state because only 3 hospitals in the country are equipped to do this kind of surgery. They did go in and remove the cancer. And ended up hollowing out his pancreas.(there was lots more the medical team had to dowith other organs) He was discharged a week ago. Stay strong. God is in control. Have faith that God knows what He is doing. Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers! Sending hugs to you and your family!!

Happy Mother's Day!! My daughter and I are going to tour a winery, have a tasting, meat and cheese charcuterie board and make great memories! April 9th was her 4th year anniversary since they took the mass off my daughter's pancreas. I totally get you. She was 25 at that time.
