I see commercially produced art pieces all the time that don’t have fifty stars. You can just tell anybody that criticizes that it was the flag for the period from 1822-1836. That’s when there were twenty four stars on the flag. Yours turned out very rustic and cute. I’d love to know what goes on inside that head of yours that sees wire brushes and says antique American flag. I think of myself as somewhat creative but I swear it would never just come up with that out of the blue.

Thank you for this DIY. I love it. I made out son the American flag one out of the tower blocks and he still loves it. I made a frame for it and added fairy lights all around on the inside of the frame. I think that tutorial was about 2 or 3 years ago. Love how created you are. Mine smells too. Not all of it. But i've already had to throw away some bundles of the rope because I wouldn't bring it in the house. That's how strong the smell was... I have purchased the white rope and it doesn't have an odor so far.

Oh I know exactly what your talking about. I used to work for a store and when we got in new clothes they had that same smell. I always wash my clothes before wearing them because of that. Other products have it too...it does usually air out. I guess it's just something they use in processing!!!

Very nice Kelly. I am american but married a Canadian 43 years ago but still love my flag. My daughter is obsessed with anything that looks american, so may have to try this one. As soon as we are out of lock down here in Ontario Canada I will go to our dollar tree or dollarama and get the supplies needed.

The petroleum or kerosene smell that comes from the jute twine and nautical rope is there cuz it's to detour bugs and rodents. If you mix white distilled vinegar and water equal part and spray or soak the rope in the vinegar water.

The rope at my dollar tree had such a strong petroleum smell that I had to leave it outside for a few days. It helped a little but still kind of strong.

We live on a farm and we have a lot of dirt so you could take the brushes and cut the handles off glue the remaking together and use it as a shoe cleaner to get the mud off of your shoes before coming into the house! ☺️ Kelly you always have great ideas and I love watching you create! I recommend you to my crafty friends all the time!! You are so creative and I can’t believe you made a flag from wire brushes!! Beautiful!! The jute rope in the auto section does have a strange diesel like smell
