This is a great video explaining the differences between your two looms. I'm so glad you are excited about your new countermarch loom. Looking forward to seeing all the beautiful things you can make with them. I'm sticking with my table loom as I would have to build a new house to have room for those looms. 😁I've taken over the dining room as it is.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. Very thorough and very informative. That simple straight forward braking system is certainly appealing. I have already had to replace the metal band on the tension brake of my floor loom and it's barely 2 years old. Look forward to seeing Lee's Surrender off the loom!

Interesting comparison. I've just purchased a second hand Louet Erica and that looks complicated enough for me. At the moment I don't have room for a floor loom but am looking for a bigger house!

Kelly, I renovated a countermarche loom made by Thorpe in NZ. I struggled with getting a good shed for a while and then I found a guide list on the Petlins website giving the correct size heddles for different makes of loom. I had the wrong size heddles. It was a little expensive to replace them but the result was fantastic. Tweaking the position of the beater also helped.

That's interesting! I have tweaked the beater several times and that has helped.

My wife and I enjoyed your video. She LOVES LOVES LOVES her David. We happened across a 10-shaft Glimakra Countermarche. We are still struggling with the shed and tie ups on the Glimakra. I think you need to add another Round and that is use of profanity. If you are anything like us the Countermarche will be the clear winner or looser depending how you view the use of profanity. 😀

Great video! Although I've only watched up to the point of rating Tying Up the Treadles, wanted to take a second and share a tip with you for making that easier. When you're comfortable enough with your new loom that you're ready for a new challenge, you might want to look into converting it to the "Top of the Lamm" treadle tie-up system. It will mean investing in quite a bit of new Texsolve cord, and a bunch a of pegs for the Texsolv, but as someone with a pretty severe spine issue (about half of my vertebrae are surgically fused), I can say that this system makes the difference between me being able to keep my CM looms or having to give them up entirely (I have 2 Glimakra's). Now I'm going to watch the rest of your video!

Thank you Rebecca, I've actually had some others tell me about that system, that is awesome that it works that well for you!

Hi Kelly! That was fun. As you know I have a new David III, and love it! Mine’s a 110cm, and though I haven’t used it to the full width, I do plan to make blankets. David III has a floor-slung beater, which I love. I also noticed that neither the David II, nor your countermarch have a shuttle race. It sure helps a lot with diving shuttles. 🤣

thank you for this comparison - I assume that people have pointed out that changing to a top-of-the-lamm tie up will mean you dont need to tie up under the treddles, I started with a four shaft Loman countermarch 39" and as a beginner that journey was fine, I think some people would find a CM to complex and others just accept the set up and learn to do it - love that you have space for more than one floor loom, and loved hearing about the cost of gettting a Louet Loom outside of the US (I am in NZ)>

Hi Kelly. I really enjoy your channel. Another advantage with the counter march loom is that you can buy or build extension that allow you to use it as a draw down loom. I've been watching Dueling Rabbits video on draw down loom weaving. WOW 😲! And thanks for the tip on the possible reasons for uneven tension. Turns out I had twisted a section my warp and the more it spooled out the looser that part got. Chalk up another lesson learned. Hope You have a good day and lots of fun with your new floor loom.

just watched your video on your 2 looms, congratulations on your "new" to you counter rmarche loom. our first floor loom was a small one, we think it is from Sweden but are not 100 % sure, there is a name on the front, wish I could send you a picture of that name, it is Ulltex?, the cross line for the t, runs from the last part of the U through to the t, she is easy to operate. Have lots of fun with the looms.

You can improve your countermarche sheds by weighting your lower lamms so that the countermarche levers at the top of the loom do not droop. The amount of weight will vary depending upon how many treadles/shafts you are using. This is because the treadles themselves contribute to the weight distribution.

Excellent comparison video Kelly! I am a little surprised about the shed on the countermarch, I have a counter balance and get a huge shed and I thought the two were similar? I also have the same type of treadles and I would prefer the type the Louet has, mine are very wobbly as well. And I really like the hanging beater, I feel you would get a better beat with it with less manual manipulation. I’ll be interested to hear how you like the sectional back beam when you get one. I like it for a really long warp but struggle with smaller, shorter warps. Still learning here!

I learned from Tom Knicely that you need to push the beater back to get the full shed on the countermarch--I hadn't found that out despite lots of research. You push it back with one hand, ready to catch the shuttle that you throw with the other. It works so well on my Glimåkra standard.

I actually changed the lower front and back beam on my countermarshloom to get the treadles under controll. With my loom that worked for the distances work out.that way the treadles are fixed in the front and the moving of the loose end of the treadles is not where me feet are. I did have to tie them a bit higher but for me that works well. The foot that is not treadling at a momenent just slides down the treadle to the beginning and rest it there.

I acquired my first floor loom recently, a Leclerc compact floor loom. I got sidetracked on other projects and haven't finished setting it up yet. I'm really attracted to the style of countermarche floor loom you have, especially after watching some video on what can be done with a Glimåkra standard or similar loom combined with a Myrehed shaft drawloom attachment. Hopefully I'll be able to add something like that to my collection one of these years. So far I've only seen countermarche looms in videos. I haven't met one in person. But from what I've seen, I'm wondering if your beater might be a little high. Shouldn't the warp be passing through the center of the reed when all shafts are in neutral?
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 2 жыл бұрын
Good observation! Originally I had the beater positioned so that the warp threads were centred but I had small sheds. The former owner told me that she always had it positioned higher, with the threads almost touching the bottom of the reed, so I adjusted it and the sheds have improved.

I didn’t have to put a longer warp on. Im a bit confused by that. The short answer is as far as your rods go. Because I had to guess my own cord length my waste is almost only the distance from back of shaft to fell plus a few inches to tie on the front. I didn’t have to add any. It looks like it should but obviously it depends where your rods get to

I suspect your sheds in your countermarche loom will only get better the more warps you put on. I do enjoy how much control you have to tweak all manner of things on a countermarche loom, but there is for sure a learning curve.

I’m handicapped and want a table loom. I’ve decided on the Ashford table loom 8 shaft. My problem, 24 inch or 32 inch. Can dish towels or rugs and or blankets be done on the 24 inch or
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 2 жыл бұрын
Mary, if you want to do blankets, the 24" is not wide enough (unless you want to be doing double width weaving). 24" is fine for towels. The 32" is quite a large loom, so just check the overall dimensions to make sure that you have the space for it.

Great video hope you don’t mind me asking What do you use to lubricant the gliders in your Dave loom, I have a David and have tried different things.
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 2 жыл бұрын
I use Inox spray, which is an Australian made lubricant. It's similar to WD40 but lighter. If you use a spray, make sure you spray just a little bit onto a dry cloth and rub that onto the rods. You don't need very much to make a big difference.
