Kelly, you had a great video on threading the heddle. You said that if you begin and end with a thread through the hole on both ends, you selvedges will be neater and not "wonky". What is you don't end with a hole???? I am just subscribed to all of your lessons online and I want to get better at what I am trying to do. Thanks for a reply. Leonore Gualano

With a soft, flexible fabric like the one you have I would avoid narrow sashing between each block as it be both very difficult to work with and wonky enough to distract from the beautiful weaving. Either Irish chain or a wider outer sashing would look beautiful, depending on the look you prefer. It's an ambitious project to quilt with non-standard fabric, it looks fantastic so far!

Will be looking forward to this series. I’d like to be able to hem my towels, but I’ve never used a sewing machine and I don’t have any room to leave it out when not in use. Need something small and basic.

I agree with you, Kelly, a basic machine is fine, even preferred!

Yes, Janomes are a great brand. For sewing handwovens, I'd want a zigzag and straight stitch. And depending on what else you may wish to do a buttonhole stitch would be useful. On "newer" machines, some of the great features (but not necessary) - needle threader - needle up/down - thread cutter (dont have one on any of my machines) - speed control - start/stop button availability instead of using foot pedal The speed control is especially useful when teachin kids to sew

I have to admit, I wouldn't mind having the needle up/down feature, it's still a luxury I can easily do without but it would be nice 😆

Thank you for being brave enough to tell people to think of others and to be kind. We have allowed rudeness to be the norm and we need to turn things around. ❤

Yes, standards have slipped a long, long way so that many people, especially the newer generation are not even aware of how to interact properly and with respect. Very sad.

Also, for weavers, a machine with good ‘punching’ power is better. So many modern machines have all plastic parts inside and just don’t have the ability to ‘punch’ through thicker fabric (or multiple layers of medium fabric). So often, older basic machines that have metal insides can get through multiple folded layers in a handwoven hem for instance.
@KellyCasanova4 күн бұрын
That is a really good point. I have seen the very "cheap" machines and I wouldn't bother. I should have mentioned that in the video!
@dorym80453 күн бұрын
@@KellyCasanova Even high end machines are often plastic inside now. It is a shame. Janome used to have a small basic machine that could still punch through multiple layers of denim. I can’t remember the model and I gave it to a cousin to learn to sew on. Good sturdy machine.

I bought a more updated Janome but still kept my old one. I don't bother to use the new one now and have gone back to my old one. My older one is more basic and is all I need.

For weavers i would suggest a machine designed for quilting to allow for greater needle clearance. I had a janome it was ok

Either would be lovely, but the squares next to each other will have a somewhat complex, busy took to them, while having sashing between them that matches the border will have a more dramatic and formal look.

Oh perfect! I have my rigid heddle loom clamped to a sturdy vintage typewriter table. The wheels can be raised or lowered so the table can be rolled around, or it can locked in place and it will not budge. I just finished direct warping, but before I removed the warp from the pegs, I thought it would be a good idea to come here to your channel and remind myself what I should next. Lo and behold - all I have to do is cinch the warp near the pegs, engage the wheels, and let the loom roll along while it rolls up the warp! Thank you once again, Kelly, for providing a simple elegant solution! ❤️

You might try “auditioning the look of sashing by separating your blocks with cut fabric (not handwoven) or by laying it out on a sheet with the blocks separated by the width you want the sashing to be. It will give you an idea of what it will look like and if you will like it.

My two cents (AUD) worth…I like the sashing in between the vertical rows and around the edge, with no sashing between each block. I think that would be visually pleasing. Btw, I enjoyed the violin music. I’m a cellist and partial to strings! Thank you! Elaine

I am a new weaver looking for a way to go fringeless that doesn't involve a sewing machine. Thank you for this tutorial! I'm doing mostly tapestry at this point, small things, and I find the fringe is often distracting. Could you explain to me what you mean by a hemstitch knot? I can't find anything about that online.
@KellyCasanova9 күн бұрын
This is hemstitching, it's a way of securing your weaving so that the weft doesn't unravel off the loom -kzbin.info/www/bejne/naDKe5qsn9yYp7M
