I’m starting with backstrap weaving, which amounts to a few sticks of different diameters and yarn. I’m starting with dowels, chopsticks, some bamboo sticks from my garden, modified paint sticks and of course yarn/twine. I tried a cardboard loom at first, and got frustrated very quickly by its instability. But that probably had to do with the thread I was using, which was intended for bookbinding. 😂 I’ve also been looking into weighted wert looms that can be made with branches from your yard.

I think you should find the backstrap more satisfying (and stronger!) to use than the cardboard, I love that you're using what you have on hand.

Thank you! I got too in my head on how complicated weaving is… Definitely going to check out the cardboard trick while i figure out if weaving is a longer lasting craft for me!

Thank you for this video, It's grounded me when it comes to starting weaving again - I haven't done it in years and I've been hesitant about starting again, not knowing which direction I really wanted to go in as I'm limited for space in my micro studio. Who knows maybe one day I will take on backstrap weaving again after all my time studying it with a group on indigenous women in Central America a few years ago :D

I have used a Beka since 1991. I have evolved to use three heddles if I want. They are very easy to use.

I completely agree with you. The tools we use should not be a certain brand or expensive. It suffices to fulfill the purpose and achieve the basics of the weaving that I want to do. Thank you for sharing. More than wonderful

Good video for beginners. You can start weaving with very modest equipment. For tapestry weavers, you can make some pretty cool looms with PVC pipe and some wood dowels.

Very true, I'm still weaving on my little 3D printed frame loom that doesn't have more features than the wooden one you show in the video, and use ice cream sticks for picking up. I've already tried clasped weft, made heddle rods for shafts and I think overshot is next. Looking in the comments below, you might want to put certain words in the filters in KZbin settings. Yes, thanks Marta, I do need to update my filters 😉

One of my favourite looms is a piece of cardboard and wooden tooth picks, perfect for weaving small pouches in the round.

Rigid heddle looms are great for beginners and they are often available second-hand.
@paulinemegson8519 Жыл бұрын
Maybe where you come from. That isn’t the case everywhere….we don’t all live in the US. A secondhand rigid heddle tabletop loom goes for anywhere from $300.00 to $700.00 here. That’s most certainly out of my budget. New is obviously even more.

I've been looking a second hand rigid heddle loom for over a year now, they are all being sold at the same price as a new one, which is daft, as they sit there unsold for months. I'm in the UK.

I am right now trying to decide on my first Ashford loom. I can't decide between the smallest Knitters Loom and the next size up, or just start with the Inklette and do card weaving. It's so hard to decide and I want to make my first proper loom a good investment. Great video thank you. I think once I buy a loom I am going to do your courses. One suggestion for a video... I enjoy weaving on my $20 loom that is like yours here. But what do I do with my weavings? I would LOVE to see some examples of your work, from small projects to your larger ones. And how you personally progressed as a weaver. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤
