Ich erinnere mich noch, dass Schweiger die Rolle eines deutschen Soldaten in Steven Spielbergs "Der Soldat James Ryan" sicher hatte. Schweiger, der große Star in Deutschland, war aber nicht zufrieden mit der Figur. Er trat an Spielberg heran und sagte, der Charakter sei ihm zu anspruchslos, zu stereotyp, zu eindimensional. Und Spielberg gab ihm sogar Recht!!! Deshalb strich er die Rolle komplett aus dem Drehbuch.

@@klptravel1 I’m not typically one to defend Americans, and you’re probably right that some of them don’t even try, I want to say that some German names really aren’t easy for them. German and English both have sounds that are sometimes hard to recreate for native speakers of the other language. Take for example the English “th”, that some Germans have no troubles pronouncing while others just can’t get it right. Same goes with the German umlauts ä, ö and ü. They simply don’t exist in English, the Americans have never needed to use them before, and maybe adding to the struggle is the unfamiliar look that might feel intimidating.

It's very common in Germany to hire the same voice actor for the dubbing of the same actor over years or even decades. Every bigger actor has their regular voice actor. It's always kind of a little scandal for movie and series fans when circumstances force a change of the voice actor.

There's good podcasts and videos by german movie-youtubers explaining that most of it comes from the "Deutsche Filmförderung", the German film funding agency and they only fund those boring safe bet lovey dovey family movies or documentaries. In Germany your movies only get a very little fraction of the funding american movies get, so we'll never get any crazy blockbusters and a movie director has to jump through sooooo many hoops to get his movie idea through all the bureaucracy.

When your last name is constantly pronounced wrongly, at some point you start introducing yourself with this pronounciation. My German last name is equally hard to pronounce (try to teach foreigners how to pronounce an umlaut 😂) and at some point I did the same thing.

He’s just so super likable. Met him many years ago at a convention ( I work in the movie industry) and he’s actually seriously funny and nice…I’d say he didn’t even seem much different to me than his usual movie characters. You know what I mean…there’s comedians who are f…ing depressing, serious or arrogant in real life. He seemed genuinely fun and normal LOL when I ran into him. He deserves all the success. Really happy for him.

I always liked Matthias, especially when he was in kind of other roles for example as young Schiller or in the movie where the teacher falls in love with her student (he was very young then). I think at one time he said he does not particulary like making all these romantic comedies, but these are the ones that pay the bills. I hope he will be getting cast in more good international stuff now. Have not seen the Army movies though, not my thing.

I watch a lot of stuff in the original english, especially, sitcoms, bc a lot gets lost in translation. but there are certain things I always watch in german, bc it's so iconic. e.g. the xfiles and silence of the lambs. the german dubbing industry is really really great.

Eddie Murphys german voice actor was one of the best to ever do it. Such a great loss. My personal favorite is Tom Hanks' (it's also Bill Murray's for example) since he also voiced a lot of animated characters like Manny from Ice Age. He passed in 2016 as well and watching new movies of either Eddie or Tom Hanks is such a different experience now. Dubbing really is huge in Germany and I'm proud of that. FUN FACT: Leonardo DiCaprio is voiced by the same person that voices Sheldon Cooper. And you know what? It totally works. I always wanted dubbing to be my job as a kid.

So funny to watch how in American talk shows there is always the same formula: somebody is not really known, you Show a picture of someone famous, and on top of it the person has to perform a little party trick, like rapping, a Hand stand etc. In this case schweighöfer impersonated edding murphy. A little sad, too. Because we as germans are more focused on a real "conversation ".

I think it depends on how well the audience is expected to know the person getting interviewed. They do these trick antics to make the lesser known people more interesting/relatable as much of the audience may not know their work. That being said, yea, the conversation is generally shallow. But they also are not given a lot of time to have a full conversation. Would be better as a podcast.

Matthias is a very talented actor and very famous in Europe! One of my favorite movies from him is the Red Baron (2008) , depicting the dynamics the pilots had flying during the Great War. In the US watch the series “You are wanted “, I think it is in Prime Video, he is the main character.
