You won't actually find her on KZbin really speaking German, apart from that one speech, over and over... yes, she would talk about the language, give some example words, teach some curses, but all in all she doesn't communicate in German, not fluently (far away from fluent, actually). Which is a shame, considering she actually did grow up as a child with the German part of her family, in Germany.

He was THE nicest actor person I've ever met, second goes to Eva Green, when I recognized him I said "Are you Mr. Mortenson" and his response was "Por favor; Viggo" then we talked about sports, the city, local restaurants etc; All in spanish. As he was leaving we shook hands and I said, "My brother is never gonna believe me" in english and he realized I was also a polyglot and he goes, and this is a direct quote, "you little rascal!" and "bis spater!" and as he's leaving out the door I go; "pas si je te vois an premier" and he laughed out loud as the door closed. Despite Trump calling Belgium a sh°thole, there is more culture in our little pissing boy (look up the Manneken Pis, I'm not even joking XD) than in all his life. So languages are considered a must in our culture and most work places. You have Antwerpen who's the biggest market for diamond dealings in the world (legally at least), Brussels, capital of Europe and its Parliament, the best beers and the biggest concentration of Castles in the world. As small countries allied for ages (Netherlands, Luxemburg, Belgium), our language culture is quite similar because we're gateways to all of Europe. From Belgium you'll get trains to England, France, Germany, Italy... most East European countries and up to Russia. So languages are a must anywhere.

But I always tell people that once you speak one of the Latin languages, it is easy to learn and speak all Latin-derived languages. Same root, and similar wording. The only thing that changes is the pronunciation. I find it more meritable when you know how to speak Russian, Chinese, Slavic languages, etc, when your native tongue is Spanish for example since they have a completely different grammatical structure.

ASL is my fifth language, but I use it more than any other language, except for my native English. (And for anyone who's interested, the switch between small "d" deaf and capital "D" deaf is to differentiate a medical condition/disability ("deaf") versus the culture ("Deaf").)

Thank you. The Sandra Bullock origin is well known here in Germany. But you have forgotten one of the greatest of all time. Sir Peter Ustinov. Okay, he has unfortunately passed away so long ago. But I would like to remind everybody here of him. He learned a total of eight languages, six of which he spoke almost fluently. He spoke English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Russian fluently, as well as some Turkish and modern Greek. He was proficient in accents and dialects in all his languages. Ustinov provided his own German and French dubbing for some of his roles. R.i.P. Sir Peter Alexander Ustinov (born as Peter Alexander Freiherr von Ustinov)

Because many native English speakers have no reason to learn another language outside of their own desire or if they have a parent who speaks that language. Whereas people who grow up in non-english speaking countries are forced to learn English if they want to be able to interact with people from other countries because it's the most universally dominant language around the world.
@RondaRandom11 ай бұрын
@@shona5512 let's be honest: no one in non english countries would be forced to learn a second language, because their language isn't "universally dominant". You could live a perfect life without learning other languages. However, learning other languages is a thing of cultural appreciation and exchange. That's why in many european countries pupils learn english as their second language PLUS a third language of their choice. The British used to learn Frensh or German for example, even though their mother tongue is "universally dominant".
@shona551211 ай бұрын
@@RondaRandom Most of us in English speaking countries are also taught second or third languages whilst we're at school, however, once we've completed the mandatory years, a lot of us have no reason to continue with it unless it's something that an individual has an actual interest in. I personally was taught, French, Spanish and Irish in school, however I'm only bi lingual with Irish & English. I simply had no need nor desire to learn other languages. Whereas when a person from a non English speaking country, takes mandatory lessons in English, they tend to continue with learning the language outside of the mandatory years, as it does make it easier to communicate with people from other countries without having to invest time in learning that specific language.

The only ones that should have been on this list are the ones that learnt the language on their own. The ones that have a parent that speaks a different language than English, should be on a different list. It's 10000% harder learning a language if you are not constantly expose to it.
@darkangel_19782 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that too. Kind of an unfair advantage, when you have to learn because of a parent

Tom Hiddleston actually spoke Ancient Greek...which is far more difficult & complex than modern Greek. Μπράβο Τομ...μπράβο 👏🇬🇷👏🇬🇷 Impressed that Bradley Cooper speaks French but surely the no. 1 spot should have been given to someone who speaks several languages...🤔

It depends I think, it is truly amazing if you are able to speak many languanges fluently, but on the other hand it is also amazing if you manage to learn one languange and to reach a near native level. In my opinion the best not-native hollywood french speaker of all time is Jodie Foster, I mean even when she speaks Italian she has a french accent. 😂
@jan80trs Жыл бұрын
The more languages you speak, the more people you can talk to. It's amazing how people can change attitude if you address them in their native language. If you're young, you learn languages fast & relatively easy. Some people retain that capability later in life. And the more languages you already know, the easier it is to learn another one, especially if it's the same language family. I myself speak 4 languages. I learned them all in school, and with family, friends an neighbours, I spoke them. But why is this so amazing for celebs? Being an actor, you deal with language all the time. Most of them are pretty smart, too. So learning another one, especially if you grow up in an international environment, isn't that hard.

I love this! I ended up majoring in Romance Languages and Literatures at the university of michigan. I grew up speaking spanish thanks to my parents, started French since middle school, and when i started college I started Portuguese and Russian. When I graduated I had five languages under my belt. ( tbh i figured the more languages I learned the more chances I had to meet and get a boyfriend. current relationship status? still heauxing.:( )

Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek's first language is Spanish and they all do interviews in English. Is it not just as impressive when a non-native English speaker does an interview in English?

Not really, because English is pretty much the easiest language in the world, especially if you already speak Spanish since there's so many words that share the same root.

So, you've included people who were raised bi-lingual and that's not the same as a native language??? I think they would disagree. Also, there are several who speak more than one or two languages - Viggo Mortenson comes to mind immediately - he speaks 4 or 5. Someone else mentioned Natalie Portman. But, they didn't make your list? The criteria for you list seems somewhat arbitrary - especially as Tom Hiddleston, who speaks several languages (including ancient Greek, ffs) ranks behind Bradley Cooper, who speaks one.
