Five Days in May • Blue Rodeo - Five Days...
oh boy.... I certainly hope this video doesn't come off as mean spirited, that certainly wasn't my intention. I was doing my best to find the humor in the subject at hand and hopefully that is the result that you may pull from it.
like I mention numerous times in the video, good and bad guitar solos can be a very subjective topic, and also like I said, the jury is still out on my thoughts on this one in particular.
I've actually grown to appreciate it quite a bit more after spending the past few days repeatedly listening to it and learning how to play it.
still thought that it would be a fun video to make, and hopefully watch and listen to.
cheers, Kelly

Love that solo, it’s raw, dirty and unpolished. Artistically it’s a beautiful fit, nothing is perfect in life and doesn’t have to be. Thanks for the video!

Agree about Knocking at your Back Door. Blackmore’s soloing on the whole Perfect Strangers album is just way off his usual standard. It’s so lame I have problems listening to this album from my favourite band and guitarist. If only Blackmore had been on form during that reunion.

I dunno, I watched this last night but it's sticking with me. This is legitimately one of my favourite solos. Before got and listened to their albums I'd only ever heard the video edit of the song, which only has a piano solo and just a taste of the guitar getting rowdy before the piano steps up again. When I put "Five Days in July" (album is 'July', song is "May' for anyone unfamiliar) and and this solo arrived I was really blown away. I was so familiar with the nurtured, polite version of the song that it caught me off guard. I had a view of Blue Rodeo as these radio friendly, clean cut, guys with polished tunes. Hearing that solo come along showed me there was something edgier to them than what was on the video channels and radio. It told me there was a Greg's Lennon to Jim's McCartney. (As an aside, "Diamond Mine" got this treatment as well.) Think of "Getting Better" by the Beatles. Paul sings "got to admit it's getting better, a little better all the time!" while John sings back "it can't get no worse!" John could have agreed, that's the expected thing. Where's the fun in that? I love the roughness, the rawness, the recklessness, the sheer inappropriateness. Greg probably could have played something slicker, Jim probably could have played some thing slicker, Glenn (the drummer) definitely could have played something slicker (as he does on 'Falling Down Blue'). It's a wonderful thing to play like Gilmour or Knopfler - something like the of "Tunnel of Love" could have been amazing - but sometimes Neil Young is what you need to get the job done.

I've never heard anyone ever discuss it like you have. For a famous, well-established band with a long track record of making good records over the years ----- how could they ever allow this solo to pass? LOL thanks Kelly, your comments are extremely accurate. This solo is so bad it's good --- for teaching guitar players about bad guitar solos!!

So, I was searching videos on 50’s wiring vs modern wiring for Les Paul guitars and for some reason this video popped up. And for some reason I watched it (maybe the pseudo-clickbait title). Either way, I absolutely adored the solo because it IS so bad that it’s brilliant IMO. I am a professional guitarist, and I occasionally play shows with friends for fun. One of those friends plays very similarly to this guitarist on this solo, and I just let him take as many solos as possible every time I play with him, because it is endlessly entertaining to me. I just yell encouragement to him and chuckle on the inside, cuz I love the guy’s enthusiasm.

so funny while you were building the premise I was thinking of this song. The solo in this song has divided my whole family lol. My wife who's not a musician loves it. My mom hates it and thinks it ruins a beautiful song. My brother is in different to it. My sister in law dislikes it. My dad is indifferent. I like the Greg just let it all hang out. Sometimes I feel like " Okay buddy - you could've reigned it in a little there" and many other times I really enjoy it. Ultimately it's a win, because it's heartfelt and provoking. Great video btw

I feel somewhat the same way. It's a mood type of solo. Sometimes if I'm in the right mood, I kind of enjoy it. Other times I just shake my head and wonder just what in the hell they were thinking, especially on THAT track. It's such a laid back song.

It is definitely a memorable solo. Some of the live versions are better executed (he avoids the pinched harmonics altogether), which seems odd for a studio recording. As you said, what were they thinking during the post-recording production? In fairness, wiki says that the whole album was recorded on Greg's farm and was intended only to serve as demos. Being a big Neil Young fan, I am not adverse to the style of solo, but it could perhaps have been executed better. But if it had, would you be dedicating a video talking about it? Memorable!

Thank you for introducing me to Blue Rodeo and indeed, this song. I really love it. The guitar playing makes you sit up and take notice and that's for sure, matey! Have to say, though, that I rather enjoyed it. It's clearly an 'anti-guitar-solo', the type of which gives plonkers like me (who are stuck at intermediate level on guitar) a bit of hope. I was struck by how the guitarist went all out to break the rules of what musicians, producers, listeners might be expecting in the solo. I think that's great. To hell with convention! If the solo was a wine I'd say that I was getting 'notes' of the soloing of Neil Finn of Crowded House and Patterson Hood of Drive By Truckers - 2 of my favourite players. A nice mix of those two in this one. Long live the 'anti-solo', I say! That guitar player was clearly saying something, making a statement, if you will. Interesting trying to figure that one out... Nice one again, KDA. Ciao for now - PT x

I also wanted to comment on the fact that you are one of the only Tubers who mod a guitar and ACTUALLY USE IT. That custom job is a beauty and sounds awesome. Well Kelly, I see it's been two years since you posted this video and asked - WELL NOW, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT? (I just happened to stumble on to this video today and it caught my attention). My answer and most humble opinion are as follows: 1. I like it; or wait, no; I mean I love it!!! 2. I think the artist is keeping it real. 3. I understand your perspective and do not disagree in the least; but to add to the things you pointed out - I can feel a driven passion in the solo, and I can somehow say it does fit even though it doesn't fit. Now I know that doesn't make much sense, but that's my best way of describing my take on that solo performance. Just thought I'd say so my brother and friend, since you asked. You take care, and as always YAWEH BLESS!!! Update: well a couple hours have passed since I typed the text that precedes this sentence and here out. I've since listened to the song in its entirety (made my eyes well up with tears, really hit home). The solo fits perfect in my opinion; ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! AGAIN, MY TAKE ON SUBJECT: It's all about raw passion and love: the relationship, the song, the girl, the guy, the solo!!! I have no other way to express my soul on this one. THANK YOU FOR SHARING WITH US, AND THANK YOU FOR TURNING ME ON TO THAT ONE.

I could believe that the "out of the box" vibe was intentional, but that combined with repeating certain notes way too many times, and (in places) horrible technique, (?) to do all of that intentionally seems far fetched, to say the least. As you noted, it's a head scratcher that no one in the whole, production effort raised enough concern to fix the broken parts of that solo (?)

It's kind of an off solo that's a little heavy, but for some odd reason, I get the jazz aspect of the guitar going in a different sound, a very slow methodical solo that turns chaotic when you see Neil Young perform Rocking In The Free World and he does his solo, kind of like that.

Hey Kelly, That really was one weird guitar solo thing. Is the band known to have an odd sense of humor...maybe it was suppose to be funny or ironic in a otherwise gentle song...? Or, maybe the guitarist was having a minor stroke during the recording...? It really would be interesting to know what they were thinking when they decided to use that in this song, (or any song for that matter). One thing's for sure...it was hilarious watching you while you listened to it with us...almost like it was painful for you...hehehe lmao!

I don't think it was a sense of humor thing. They're a pretty serious bunch and this song is one of their biggest hits. It's an obviously very well written song that they must have known would be a big hit. To throw in this jarring solo at the end of it makes little sense, at least to me.

As others have said, your facial expressions and body language upon playing the original are priceless. I'm guessing your experience as a fine-dining waiter have honed your communication skills. BTW, you somehow have been able to match the tone of this and all the solos you've done unbelievably. I too have BIAS FX 2 and you're much better at tone matching than I am. I even have the Elite version, which goes to show you that when it comes to tone, without the fingers even the greatest tools (amps, effects, software, etc.) aren't enough.

This solo is a clear tribute to Neil Young..."they met in a hurricane " (like a hurricane) I absolutely love it, but understand that it's a strange choice. That's what makes it brilliant. The studio version was absolutely horrendous and like you said the first 30 seconds aren't so bad. Honestly I was digging it but theeeen.... Yeah. Your take was actually pretty interesting because I really liked the tone and I could kind of understand what the soloist was trying to do, despite the jarring notes, it just seems like he just executed it really poorly. Clean it up and take out the excessive pinch harmonics and it has potential to be a great solo that builds up to an awesome outro that you could fade out on. Would you be interested in making a video doing your own take on how you think it should have been? I think it'd be really cool to hear a more 'proper' solo with no mistakes and some expression.

I thought I'd suggest Poisons' Unskinny Bop as a dishonourable mention? But that was pretty terrible.. like the last time I recorded my guitar playing..

The only reason that I can understand as to why the rest of Blue Rodeo agreed to let this awful solo remain on this song ---- is that infamous, green-eyed monster called EGO. Obviously Greg Keelor's and ego status within the band is so high that he gets his way. There's no other reason, unless the point was to deliberately make a terrible solo as some kind of statement or contrast. Who does that? Why? When a solo should be really well crafted for the song, and musically pleasing to hear over and over again?

This is the guitar solo version of trying to write left handed.

I was going to say that the worst guitar solo was maybe Dr. Hook, "Cover of the Rolling Stone". Then I watched this video. I actually turned the volume down.

My definition of a bad guitar solo is any solo that loses the melody of the song , solos that guitarists is just showing off !

Don’t know a lot of the band , but it sounds like he was trying to play a bit sloppy, With harmonics, perhaps Is mimicking Neil Young’s style. Parenthetically, can you cover Fu$kin up my Neil , that’s Neil and I think Crazy horse at their best/ worse?

It definitely sounds drunk. It, shall we say, expresses emotional distress. Intentional? Who can say?

This would actually be a good solo is played with proper technique. I'm not a Blue Rodeo fan by any stretch AT ALL, but I know buddy is capable of playing this properly. He musta been drunk or the crappy technique must have been intentional.

Congrats for tackling such an out of control solo. If I were to judge honestly, I'd have to say it sounds like something I might have played when I don't really feel into it and my mind is unwillingly wandering someplace else. I'm surprised it's on record, but I'm pretty sure these things happen to everyone trying to play. I won't say it's a good solo, certainly not "most awesome" in any way, but I can respect the effort.

The solo in Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" has always irritated me. Disjointed? Poorly played? missed/sloppy notes? That's what I hear, but I imagine others might say Beautifully chaotic, wonderfully off kilter, full of emotion...etc etc etc. to me?....it needed a retake!

Hahaha😄 Thank you!! I had so much fun watching this video. And I'm sorry (not really sorry) but you failed to nail all the pinch harmonics😏 They didn't sound half as bad as the original😆
