Believe me, Germans are NOT okay with those scooters being parked everywhere. It has caused a lot of controversy and now there are certain areas within some cities where it's not allowed to end the ride, so that hopefully people won't be parking the scooters there.

I have seen areas where people just collected all the scooters standing and lieing around and just threw them in some trench. I doubt that most of the germans are ok with this fashion. I mean it is nice that we have this eco friendly alternative but not in this fashion. Also i think i read that most of the folks who pick up the scooters and recharge them are there on freelancer basis and they are payed very poorly... But since we have so many new low wage workers in our country, to many people seem to be ok with this...

The scooters in the cities are real crap. The legal allowance of the scooter business was premature and without a complete set of rules. The collectors and rechargers are usually subtractors, who have their own one-man-business with a van and a couple of sockets in their private homes. It is sometimes almost like a pyramid sceme, where they loose money instead of earning. You are right with the Bundeswehr. It is difficult to recruit, although the opportunity to study medicine or engineering at the Bundeswehr was always in a high esteem. But I feel, the bad reputation of being a soldier is different than during the peace movement. It is a reputation of mismanagement and Neonazi tendencies in the last few years, not the overall rejection of the past. For the rest, I did not experience neither the amount of handy pay or the packend liquor cans. And for John Deer, I think, they bought some large German agricultural mashine businesses. But I'm not sure.

I remember watching a video about a year ago where a guy did all the calculations for how much it cost him to recharge scooters vs what he earned and while I don’t remember the exact result, I believe he was in the green at the end of the day but not enough to pay himself even minimum wage for all the hours he put in. Thanks for sharing!

I can see two reasons the cans are locked up, as others said they are quite expensive and it's to prevent theft. The other reason is, that they contain hard liquor and can not be sold to underaged customers. Liquor bottles are easy to spot, but these cans look like soda or energy drink cans. For the cashier it can be difficult to see the difference, especially with the speed that they scan the wares. With the boxes it helps the cashier to identify cans that are not to be sold to underaged customers.
@Nutzername92a

Literally every supermarket has a mechanism (e.g. a beeping sound) that signals to the cashier that they scanned an age-restricted item. So it's definitely not reason #2, especially not if we're talking about a big chain like Edeka.

It happened sometimes that people opened them, drank a few sips and put them back in the shelves. ! After that became sort of pandemic, those locks have been brought in to encounter this. It is not at the cashier isles because there are most of the time people in line which limits stealing, and the cashier spots that as well. You often see the Liquorshelf in the viewzone of the cashiers because of this too.

E-scooters: believe me, they are a pest and they are NOT well liked here (especially as they are extremly eco un-friendly!!) Liquor is mostly locked up when it is more expensive (in relation to the average product price), or if it is a limited edition (and therefor: likely higher priced, too).

I used to work in a Rewe store and was responsible for the aisle where the alcoholic beverages and spirits are kept. The more expensive spirits were locked up in a showcase for two reasons: first to prevent underage people from trying to buy them, second to prevent people from trying to steal the bottles. Since they are more expensive and contain a higher percentage of alcohol people are more intrigued to steal them instead of the cheaper stuff. If you wanted to buy a bottle from the showcase you had to ask the cashier to open the showcase and get it out for you. I guess it's the same with those cans.

I´m a german soldier and every time I visited the US I was blowing away from that huge support for military personal through the the public. And that not only for US soldier but also for all allies! For example as I visited a Sea World parc during a Orca-show they invited all soldiers (including allies all over the world) present to stand up. Then all visitors clap. It was a very emotional and unforgetable for me because I had never experienced that before. Any time anyone hearded abaout that I´m a german soldier they say "thanks for Your service". Ok it changed a little bit since Donald Trump. Before he became president I often got millitary discount in a lot of shops. After that he decideted it would be great to make it public that Germany not fully fulfilled the NATO treaty. The treaty obliges all allies to invest at least 2 percent of the gross domestic product in the military. Not that easy in germany if the people doesn´t want so much militär. For me it is also a shame but I think that he only want to exert pressure for a better deal! That obviously sowed conflict quickly between peoples. I served side by side with US soldiers on my missions in Afghanistan. The same stores that gave me military discount in the years before, after told me when I showed my ID that the military Discount is exclusively for US soldiers only. But nevertheless the support of americans about all of their soldiers are great. Another thing that I noticed that Donald Trump as he became the president he decided a lot of bad things against ethnic minorities and immigrants for example black and mexican people. For example building a wall and abolishing Obama care. What a great loss because as I was on my missions or met US - soldiers at the US Base Grafenwoehr (germany) I saw that a huge percentage, or maybe the the larger part of american soldiers which serve their country are black or mexican ethnic. Sadly. I hope that he will be not win the next election. The reason of changes that you noticed in relation to the new public billboards with advertising for the german army is the following... In the year 2011 they decided to abolishe the compulsory military service. They think that germany is surrounded of friendly alies and there is no need for a huge army to protect the country. They thinked that for missions like Afghanistand and Mali far away outside germany it will be needed to become a smaller and more specialised army. So they lowered the amount of german soldiers (down to 180.000) and changed the existing enlisting system in to a voluntary system. A huge mistake because today there are a lot of tensions and threats and they have to enlarging the army again. But there are not enough volunteers because of the huge amount of Job offers of the german economy. During the last years the german economy grew up and the companies have to offer a lot to get qualified staff. Because of that there is a huge lack of volunteers and they have to change the strategi. Since two or three years they developed advertisment on KZbin, Twitter and Instagramm and also the billboards as You noticed. Again, many thanks for Your great content and sorry for the cruel long text. ;-) I like Your channel a lot!

I agree, you never need to apologize for doing the service. I too faced a lot of fire for my decision to join the German Air Force in the late 1980s, but when my plan fell through to become a pilot, I also quit early, to go to university. I still sayed in the reserves though and going to an exersize was always a welcome distraction. So all the changes to the Bundewehr making it possible to serve outside Germany's borders was after my time and it had me concerned for quite a bit. But anyway, anyone going out there and playing an important role for our country and our allies, in the most adverse conditions possible and coming home beaten, drained and sometimes broken. That does deserve uttermost respect. But I have the same respect for those who didn't want to and did the Zivildienst. And I really found it quite appaling that we did abolish the compulsory service but more because it hurt the medical institutions and it did lessen the appreciation for having a military even more. They never should have done that. Because it had an important role of bringing together people from all kinds of social backgrounds with would not normally happen unless you go to big festivals like Wacken or Oktoberfest ;) I am a pacifist at heart, but I'm also a realist. My bee is with the Politicians creating and implementing policies and with the high brass with strategies and tactics. And it iw with them this needs to be address. Not the common soldier who just does his duty. So, a big thank you for your service from me!

There is no justification for it, ethically or legally, and robbing people off their time, making them enter the job market one year later, on the off-chance that they decide to stay with the army is ridiculous.

In Germany you can get on and off public transport without having to prove you have paid (I have never seen ticket gates at train or underground stations), and even in pubs you don't have to pay for each drink at time of ordering, they just mark your beermat and you pay the bill (check) on departure. I am sure there still must be some crime but I feel a lot safer in Germany than I do anywhere else in the world.

Card payment and contactless payment is becoming more and more common here in Germany. I had to explain to a cashier the other day how Google Pay works, which surprised me very much. I've been paying almost everything by card since 2005, but until two years ago, purchases under 10 Euros were often excluded from merchants due to the merchant fees you mentioned. In the meantime I hardly have any cash in my wallet. In our village someone has such an electric scooter and he drove down the street here yesterday with a small basket of food between his legs, he was shopping at the local discount store and I caught myself thinking "Hey that's cool!". when I visited amsterdam last year, I found these vehicles just annoying like the plague. I lived in Wilhelmshaven for years and still live in the surrounding area, we have the biggest naval base in Germany and the German armed forces also have facilities on site. Here you always see people in uniform. I myself was the year before last for compulsory military service ("Wehrpflicht"), but I did alternative service in a social institution ("Zivildienst"). Nevertheless, all people who work in the national defense deserve respect and all kinds of insults are pretty inappropriate there. The supermarkets determine very precisely which expensive alcoholic beverages are stolen the most and then lock them up. These crates can be permanently installed or equipped with an alarm transmitter. If this is not removed at the cash register, a very loud alarm signal sounds. The handling of alcohol is much too lax in Germany, I would immediately be in favour of alcoholic drinks being taxed more heavily and also only being allowed to be sold at certain times. I have experienced alcohol abuse in my family and among my friends, but in Germany thousands of people would rather die every year and cost the health system billions of Euros, instead of the powerful alcohol lobby in Germany losing sales.

GSG9 IS Police now. And such an operation like Operation Feuerzauber in 1977 (liberation of the hijacked Lufthansa plane Landshut in Somalia) wouldn't be possible today. The thing is, GSG9 was a part of the Bundesgrenzschutz back then, and the BGS was paramilitary, not a police! So actually they were some kind of auxiliary military and it was possible to perform such actions. They also got the status as combatants according to international law. In 2005 the BGS was transfered into the Bundespolizei, and as part of this they lost this combatant status. That was the reason that the KSK was founded, now they would handle such situations like the Operation Feuerzauber today. And actually the GSG9 is no longer the best thing to go since their first commanding officer Ulrich Wegener left the BGS for retirement. His successors were mostly guys sitting on a desk, Wegener was leading the missions in personal, including Operation Feuerzauber. That was exposed in Bad Kleinen in 1993...that mission was a total disaster.

@@Marcel_Germann Interesting. I didn't know of these newer developments. So, they are now back to their original purpose (to fight terror attempts like the one at Munich Olimpic games)? @@bazoo513 Germany used to not really have federal police at all. Police was exclusively a matter of the states. Because the newly founded anti terror unit was to be under federal authority, the _Bundesgrenzschutz_ was the most appropriate parent institution, even though it wasn't a perfect match. Hello Kelly, very interesting. I made my military service in Germany back in 2002, it's something that is really hard to recommend, people can learn a lot of being responsible for something and someone, not so selfish and working as a team, on the the other side i realised on how many ways i can kill somebody else and would kind of people are aloud to use a weapon. A cashless country is an unsafe country, with a credit card people are able to now what you are buying and where do you do it and i saw so many people struggling with a credit card in their hands and even Banks are able to lose all your money and the card is useless. That US economy system showed us what happens if trust all that buying on credit, the whole world had to deal with it, because of that unsafe weird connecting. I have always some cash with me, the debit card is extra.

With you on the cashless society thing. Here in the UK, we're much further along than the US and Germany on the route to a cashless society, and it's definitely disconcerting for sure, especially when in the last few years, we've had multiple IT outages at the banks and card companies, one in particular lasting for days when one of our medium-sized banks tried migrating its IT networks from one system to another owned by its current parent company,, and when it didn't go as planned, it caused absolute chaos. If we didn't have cash, then I think we'd be a whole load more vulnerable than we are now. (Perhaps we should have kept cheque payments and card imprinters in shops). Now during this current pandemic, I've seen a few photos of notices outside of shops saying that cash isn't accepted, and I'm always left thinking "if they keep on making every shop cashless permanently , it won't end well at all."

It may be clear in how many ways you can kill a person. However, it is a common misconception by many that soldiers aim to kill as many opponents as possible. It is definitely not, at least not when the soldier thinks and is not on a campaign of conquest, which can certainly be excluded for the Bundeswehr. The aim is to make an opponent so incapable of fighting as long as possible that he can no longer be dangerous, not kill him. Killing is counterproductive, so you only relieve the opposing logistics. What does the opponent do with a killed person, he passes on weapons, equipment and food to a new soldier - bad! What happens if you don't kill the opponent, but only disable them? After it has a bad effect on the morale of the troop if you simply leave your wounded lying there, the injured are rescued and then need medical care, food and so on. So while a dead opponent does nothing but put another head on the other side, the effect is much more efficient in the other case. The enemy now not only has a fighter to replace, if they may be able to replace them. He now has a considerable amount of personnel and logistical effort to take care of the injured person, which is missing at the front. Just calculate how much work is required to replace 10 fighters or more and how much work is to take care of ten or more seriously injured. ==> Only the nutcase with their white pigeons constantly claim, against better knowledge, that soldiers are killing others, they don't, at least those who can think don't do it without need. That being said, the goal is not to fight particularly successfully. The goal is to deter third parties from stupidities that lead to hostilities by large, well-trained and equipped armed forces. --- BTW: I guess "aloud" should be "allowed", sounds similar but is spelled different.

And it's finally your decision.

The German Military is as good of an organization as most of Europe. The UK is probably stronger. But, the German military had so many limits on it for so long. But, I was impressed with our German brothers-in-arms, when I did get to deal with them. I earned the German Sports badge in gold. We had an Oberfeldwebel as our trainer and tester. He was not giving those away, I can tell you. These recruiting posters are all aimed at Officer recruiting. Officers are not conscripted in the US or any army. They are chosen under different programs, or commissions and serve for a longer time than conscripts. Same for NCOs.

Basically the rather bad condition of the equipment is the result of the military being unpopular in Germany and thus the German politicians don’t like to spend much money on the military because they won’t get votes for doing it. Furthermore of course for example the US military is involved (with more soldiers, thus also more casualties and higher financial costs) in operations like Afghanistan, Iraq and countless other operations yet the US military is still far more popular in the USA, than the Bundeswehr is in Germany.

Contactless payment became a lot more popular during the last weeks in Germany, the infrastructure grew over the last years to a point that you can make NFC payments in every supermarket and most urban restaurants. As there is a standard for the underlying technology, you can use Apple or Google Pay on any terminal which would accept a contactless credit card payment. iPhones have a small market share in Germany, but 15% out of 60 million people (80m minus children) is still a big number.

These canned alcoholic mix drinks are also known as Alkopops here - if they are based on hard liquor like vodka, brandy, they are taxed much higher than classic alcoholic drinks and cannot be sold to under-18-year-olds, but they are especially popular in that age group because they are made to taste sweeter, which promotes binge drinking... The cases are usually to avert theft - you can see the prices are 4-5 Euros / ~5.40 USD a pop. It's just a local decision of individual supermarkets to use such measures if they think it's needed in their area. I once even saw a local Kaiser's (now defunct supermarket chain) put packs of ground coffee and espresso into a closed cabinet, which made me wonder what kind of clientel would be frequenting that particular area to go steal a normal pack of Jacobs Kaffee or Dallmayr Prodomo etc.

I'm no tin foil hat but I do like to use cash. We currently do have a negativ interesset, or the banks have when they put money to the EZB, about -0.5%, the banks started to push that to the campany bank accounts above one million a few years ago, currently 100K and even for private bank accounts it's coming ( above 100k already for customers of some banks.) I've just received a letter in my inbox in my online bank account, they will charge 50 or was it 70 cent for each time I'll get some cash from the ATM. Additionally I've seen some news articles yesterday, reporting some banks also started to charge for paying after xx times paying with your EC-Karte. I don't think it's a good solution to keep an huge amount of money in cash in your house, flat etc, but if you have to pay 0.5% interest to the bank, just for them to keep your money save... you'd lose 1.5 to 2% at the current inflation. If there is no plausible way to use cash anymore, this could be even worth as we would have no way to avoid that. One reason they also trying to get controle over Bitcoin etc.

Miss Kelly, I spent six months at Ramstein AFB with a MarDet in 1977. The Germany you described is light years away from what I experienced. Leaving the base was stepping into a whole different world. I just found your channel, Phoenix is still doing "home quarantine" so after work, I'm home. I've been binge watching your vids and they have taught me sooo much. We, my fellow Marines and I, thought Germans were cold or aloof or rude. We'd say something like, "Hi there or How you doin" and all we'd get back is, "Gutten tag or gut". I think Americans have a "small talk" gene in our DNA. Another thing is the German language is very hard to learn. They take two or three words and smash them all together! Also, their language is very specific. I gave up trying. I picked up a few phrases but that was it. The countryside was beautiful and the girls were very pretty.

Regarding scooter collection, one of the big players does have regular employees doing this, while all the others seem to rely on single-person-"company" subcontractors ... Black friday only became a thing over the last two years or so, probably mostly due to Amazon pushing this world wide, so that local dealers had to come up with a reaction to this ... there used to be specific "Sommerschlussverkauf" and "Winterschlussverkauf" seasons, even regulated by law, where especially cloth shops would be able to get rid of stock before preparing for the next summer or winter seasons at a discount. But discount laws have been relaxed a lot a few years ago. Cans in boxes I've never seen, but it seems as if that shop only boxes "Alko-pops", so any thing containing hard liquor. Maybe to give cashiers a clear visual clue that for these you need to be 18, not 16, to legally purchase ... with those "Flachmann" bottles it is easy to distinguish, but a can is a can ... And John Deeer, well ... everybody over here still calls them "Lanz", and there are "historic tractor" clubs all across the country, where the original "Lanz Bulldog" from Mannheim, with his one cylinder, 6.3 liter 12 horsepower engine is one of the most favorite models, with its unique "kult...kult...kultkultkult" sound :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanz_Bulldog
