In Germany we also use "kaputt" to say we're exhausted. "Ich bin kaputt" = I'm done, I'm exhausted, I'm broken same thing, it depends on the situation and mimic of the person using that phrase

@@ingoseidinger424 Nah, it's probably coming from latin like most of the words we use today. e.g. caput esse = becoming unnessesary that's only an example I found with Google but makes sense. Though the double t isn't that common in English like it is in German. In Addition, the word "kaputt" is pronounced like a German would do while we pronounce the word "cool" just like native english speakers would do.

So gut wie jede Sprache hat etliche Lehnwörter die aus dem Kontext der Historie übernommen, ersetzt oder abgeändert wurden... die englische Sprache ohne Lehnwörter aus dem lateinischen oder franzoschischem ist dem germanischen entstanden... Du musst dir mal j.r.r, Tolkien im Original anschauen. Er hat weitestgehend versucht Lehnwörter zu vermeiden und durch englischstammige eher ungebräuchliche Synonyme ersetzt ;)

A few notes to this video: Germans never use the word "Schlepp" as a noun (which Americans do actually and it's very interesting). We use it only as a verb and to be honest I don't think the word "Schlepp" exists. It could be the word "Schlapp" (tired) but again this isn't used as a noun either but as an adjective. Blitz is not only used in military context but also in weather forecast when it's thunder and lightning (Blitz und Donner) and that's the original meaning. It was adapted to war and not the other way around. I have never ever heard the word "Flak" in my entire life and I've been living in Germany for 27 years now. Dunno if it's slang but even the written word "Flugabwehrkanone" isn't a word I use in daily conversation... Oh and by the way, the pronunciation of "Über" is also different because of the "ü". And that's very important in the German language.

Thaler is indeed the root word but the word "dollar" entered American English via the Dutch "daalder" which at the time was a common coin in Europe. A daalder was 1,50 guilders. It didn't exist anymore in the 20th century but the rijksdaalder which was 2,50 guilders still did.
