In regards to the constant apologies, I decided to try and replace these “sorry” with a word of appreciation whenever possible. For example, instead of “sorry I’m late” with “thank you for waiting” This has been so helpful for me mentally

I love the continuation of the conversation about over apologizing. I too do it and I have had so many people in my life tell me to stop apologizing, which then of course I apologize for. I was talking to my friend about this a couple of weeks ago and she was telling me how that’s something she was working on too. And the thing she said that helped her the most was instead of saying “I’m sorry” as a blanket statement, say “I apologize for...” which then helps you be much more conscious of why you are apologizing. With your example, Kelly, of that girl at the grocery store if she said “I apologize for...” what? She would have realized that she has nothing to apologize for. I thought it was great advice from my friend!!

Haha, I was going to say this! I'm Canadian but live in the US and so many times if I say sorry in situations like she described, I get a loud, "you don't have to say sorry!" It's so awkward. I never know how to respond other than to say sorry again 😁

Your story about being in the store is very Midwestern. We say "ope, sorry" it's not because we are apologizing really it's more of a vernacular phrase. I am guilty of this everyday!

Something that helped me stop from excessively apologizing is saying “thank you.” Even in the being late example, you could acknowledge the person’s patience and say “thanks for waiting.” I find I constantly apologize when I vent to my friends or am struggling with depression/anxiety, and now I try to correct myself by saying “thank you for listening.”

I love the look you created! I also resonate with what you said about saying “I’m sorry” a lot. In my field, i work with a lot of women, especially ones who have been assaulted/abused, and we often talk about women being socialized to apologize for taking up space in the world! Maybe this is a weird take on the 'sorry' thing but... I'm Canadian, and of course we are known for saying sorry a LOT. But in my mind, there's a difference between an *apology* and what I call 'the Canadian sorry'. I agree on all yo0ur points about apologizing to someone instead of thanking them, but most of the time when I say sorry it's not because I'm apologizing, but rather acknowledging someone. Here it's not uncommon for someone to thank you for something, and for you to reply with 'sorry' even though it doesn't make much sense in the context of apologizing. In that way, it seems like a polite and friendly way to say "I see you, and respect you." Sorry for the ramble, haha.

I know what you mean. I'm from Minnesota, and being highly contentious is a sign of being a mature and stable and "good" human in a way, and saying sorry to people is a way to acknowledge their presence and let them know you mean no ill will. It's hard to explain to people who aren't part of that culture!! (P.S. Kelly, if you are reading this, I am not disagreeing with you. I think women apologize for things way more than men do. Like being late to show up, I would apologize at least twice upon arriving, and again when I'm leaving, whereas my husband might not even think to apologize! I totally support your decision. 😊)

I'm Russian and there's a stereotype that Russians are rude. I wouldn't say we're rude but we're definitely straightforward and we don't apologize for "existing" as you said. But this famous politeness of most native English - speakers is fascinating for us. I personally adore this and try to adopt while speaking English. So maybe it's not smth you should minimize

I realized after your discussion about saying I am sorry, I say it far to often for things I should not be sorry about "compulsive use of" as you just mentioned. I don't know why as a female I feel like I have been trained to say I am sorry when that is not what I actually should say. A bit late for a comment, but when I moved to the U.S I was shocked just how much "I'm sorry" people say. It is an American culture thing, the concept of polite is so broaden, that it covers elements that are not related at all. It drove me insane that people apologized in stores just because they passed by me. If you did not ran me over, there is nothing to apologize for, your in the clear..lol
