Kelly you definitely have a home in my hall of Fellow Midwestern Ladies that I remember when I need to be bouyed up. Thanks for always reminding us that we're beautiful the way we are and that it's supposed to be about fun and joy and not spending, "results," or anything else. <3

The time taken for a low stakes procedure like a brow tint and lamination may not be in total lower. But in technical development teams, it is actually worth automating tasks that take little time because of the switch tasking and the benefit of the peace of mind that you have solved this problem. For me that beauty ‘automation’ was getting a powder brow. Actually I still put on brow powder to be a little darker but it’s like 10 seconds instead of 5 mins every day of my life

I just tint my eyebrows with "just for men." It's cheap, 5 minutes, and super easy. And then my face has eyebrows for a couple weeks =)

with how vicious trend cycles are, i’m continuously surprised at how ready everyone is for permanent and semi-permanent treatments. like, you do realize the style is going to be completely different in 5 years, right? and treatments ALWAYS have consequences?
@Peeoffmute52 минут бұрын
Surprised nobody has brought up the time saving element. Time is saved when you consider most people have super busy lives and maybe 1-2 days off a week where they have a slot of time to go get a treatment done that will last them those upcoming weeks. The days they work is where the time is saved.

I literally tint my own brows and lashes. For like $8. I can’t comprehend paying someone $100+ to do it for me. It’s too easy. I’ve never wanted or needed filler and can’t do my own facelift so we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. 😂

I am very open-minded about plastic surgery. I have had Botox and some mild facial filler and many other skin care treatments as well as implants. But I do NOT like the look of most lip filler, and I do not feel I need it. However, I STILL find myself thinking about getting it done because it’s so common. This just shows how trendy beauty procedures and looks can influence even strong-minded individuals. I remind myself of it regularly to fight the pressure.

This is your best series! Thank you so much for talking about this, it’s so important. I’m too “ old “ to feel the need to follow trends, I know what I like and I definitely know what doesn’t suits me. Mistakes have been made in my younger years🫣! But even though I don’t follow trends I still have insecurities, I was in my 20’s when thin eyebrows were it, and I plucked like there were no tomorrow! Well, they never grow back😲! At least once every six months I look up microblading. I’m probably never going to get it done, I’m so afraid that I’m not going to be satisfied.

I think the word treatment is still problematic. You treat illness. Thin lips or unruly brows are not diseases. Beauty alteration would be more accurate terminology.

This video reminds me of a quote from Erin McKean - “You don’t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked ‘female’.”

Thank you for this content! I’m 72 and there was a time my big lips were not popular and now they are perfectly in style. 😂 I do have my eyebrows tinted every four weeks because they are almost invisible. You are beautiful!

I have to disagree a little bit because I get my eyebrows microbladed and I get lash extensions and it saves me a ton of time in the morning! Actually most days I barely have to put on any makeup to look like I'm all put together because of these two steps I eliminated. Also No amount of mascara would make my eyelashes pop like lash extensions do. And if it's something I don't have to think about when it comes to my brows, I'm all for it

I tint my eyebrows at home from men’s beard dye and I bought a $20 lash tint on Amazon. I save so much money by just curling my lashes, which somehow holds better with dye and using basic gel for the brows. So 30 bucks all in for 6+ months :)

i love the micro makeup trends because its usually a look and you dont have to buy as much as with clothes, amd you can use it more than once, and its fun, its like painting and experiencing things you might like.

Anyone old enough to remember “When Harry Met Sally?” Billy Crystal says to Meg Ryan, “(paraphrasing) you’re the worst kind of high maintenance. You are the one who thinks she is low maintenance but in reality is seriously high maintenance.” Why can’t anybody just accept the beauty that comes from within? I’m 60 years old, and I am done with the rat race of in-your face beauty. Maybe with age comes the wisdom that I don’t have to prove anything to anybody, and I’ve learned to love myself, flaws, and all.

Hi Kelly, i would not expect you to say that you are insecure because you are literally objectively so gorgeous... you really should not feel that way but i know we are always harsher with ourselves. Try to be kind to yourself. 😊 I also want to say that i feel more accepted to see beautiful women like you who have small lips because i do too. So please stay like you are (haha kind of selfish i know...😮)

I worked in city government in the business license department. Our municipality was strict (for liability purposes) on licensing so unless someone was licensed through the secretary of state or environmental health they couldn’t get a business license. it was astounding the number of people that were practicing or attempting to practice that had no credentials or simply took a crash course from a random person that also was unlicensed. That is what concerns me the most is you have no idea who you are trusting to inject things into your face and they could cause so many injuries. If you want to have these procedures done, absolutely ensure that they are reputable business with a business license issued by the county or city and have the appropriate professional licensing, showing that they are indeed valid enough to provide the service. Also, an LLC is not a professional license. That is simply you securing the name of your business so no one else in the state can use your exact business name. A professional license would be a cosmetologist license, esthetician license, tattoo artist license.

It's good to love yourself without makeup but intimidating/makeup-ey makeup is sooo empowering!! Many successful women have been using makeup throughout history to make a statement and so will I. Tired of the clean girl look, I don't do that anymore. Dreamed about wearing dark lipstick every day of the week since I was a child and I grew daring enough to fulfill it lol. I don't worry about having certain facial features that much though. I think outside of social media people can still appreciate different face types.

But you need a lot of time to find a good brow gel and a good brow pencil, so it can be 98+30minutes = 128minutes, it's ~ the same
@KellyGooch4 сағат бұрын
I actually considered adding that time into my example originally. But I ultimately decided not to out of the assumption that the user (that was debating potentially getting the professional service) probably already had a brow pencil that they were using. The way I see the “high maintenance to be low maintenance” argument framed is to opt into a NEW service to replace your old one (i.e. they would have a brow pencil *already*)

So real. I've chosen to not participate, but I agree - both options are "-...I feel bad..." I actually got into a fight with my mom a few years ago, one of our last conversations before her fatal heart attack at 60 (I'm 39). She'd been telling me my whole life to change ("improve") my appearance. My hair should look 'natural' but 'pretty', as opposed to 'messy' and 'streaky' - I wear it wavy and get ribbons of various colors for high/low lights. So, the color shouldn't change, except 🚫🩶, but the texture should?! I should wear dresses, not heels, etc. She'd regularly push for plastic surgery (boobs, nose, any/every thing) which I repeatedly objected to for the reasons cited in this video. That last argument was me saying no to a trip to Virginia where someone could "fix [my] face" (smooth acne scaring on my cheeks). I said it's not ok that these expectations are pushed on women, that I won't contribute to them. She said unless people think I look nice they won't do what I want and I'll die alone. I acknowledged that would suck but restated that it's my choice and I'd rather that than have a partner who'd be so superficial. I use my presentation to express who I am. If I feel like procedures will help that, great; if not, pass. I dye my hair, I have tattoos, I sometimes wear makeup. If I'd better represent my actual self with a different whatever I'd get the surgery. I'm not going to just because society says that's what's hottest. I miss my mom, but honestly since 2023 it's been a noticable relief to not have to constantly defend what I want to do - or not do - to my own body. Stay strong, everyone. Decide for yourselves. People will whine either way, so might as well go with what feels best to your guts 🩷

My thumbnail photo is from last year. I was 61 in that photo. Not a perfect body, not a perfect face. I control what I can, within reason (my hair- but that being said I was a salon-done platinum blonde for 12 years until covid started), my skin (a basic skincare routine), my teeth (flossing is important!), my makeup skills (I am an artist already and was an 80's new waver, so, quite well practiced despite taking many years off makeup in the 90's). Drink lots of water, don't drink alcohol (none is best but reducing is always good), get good sleep and decent exercise, have a 5-6 hour food window each day and skew toward healthy, and turn off political and/or depressing news.

Kelly, I’ve been thinking a lot about how content creators are influenced by comments on their appearance, whether those comments are bad or good. I imagine that even compliments can make creators feel hyper-aware of their looks. So my rule is never to comment on a content creator’s appearance unless the content is directly about that - e.g it’s an eye look tutorial then I’ll say that it brings out their eye colour. But if it’s a video essay about a topic in pop culture then I think it’s inappropriate to say anything about the speaker’s looks, good or bad. I don’t want to make anyone feel judged or ogled. I’d rather compliment their efforts in making the video, like research, structure, editing, humour, etc. I hope that you are able to tune out the negative comments ❤ Your wisdom and level thinking always shine in your makeup musings videos, which always leave me with something to think about.

An additional big problem in my eyes is something we call "same face syndrome" in the artist world, the fact that Christina Aguilera and Lindsey Lohan can look like basically the same person is bizarre when you look at old pictures of them. These procedures all have the goal of glorifying the same standard facial features (plump soft but defined lips with most volume in the middle of the upper lip, almond shaped eyes, high cheekbones, slender button nose, even arched eyebrows). The by-product of using these popular procedures is that you start to lose the things that make your face distinctly you, it's a loss of identity and a celebration of self-objectification.

Maybe part of the makeup purchasing decline is due to the skyrocket of prices! I don't get cosmetic procedures to replace makeup but i have been purchasing less/no makeup due to the large price increases.

When people need right mindset of their ownself how they look , people getting plastic surgeries or other treatments. Plastic surgeries or any other treatments are nothing wrong but people do it cause thier low self-esteem, low self acceptance about their ownself that why it is problem.
