I'm an Englishman in my mid-sixties and I have wonderful memories of Paddy lodgers in our poor house working on the M1. Wow! That was around 1960. Such wonderful men. Big and joyful. Generous and gifted with life. Making money through hard work and a future unfolding. They reckoned the digs were the best this side of the water. I reckon their company was one of the best things in my life.

These lyrics were written by Ewan Maccoll for his BBC Radio Ballad program "Song of a Road", about the construction of the M1 motorway in Britain in the late 1950's. Most of the workers on that job were Irish or Eastern European guest workers who faced horrible exploitation. Luke Kelly, God and Marx rest his soul, truly does it justice here.

Luke Kelly - Come my little son ;- Come, me little son and I will tell you what we'l do Undress yourself and get into bed and a tale I'll tell to you It's all about your daddy, he's a man you seldom see For he's had to roam away from home, far away from you and me [Chorus] Remember, laddie, he's still your dad Though he's working far away In the cold and heat of the hours of the week On England's motorway Now, when you fall and hurt yourself and get a feeling bad It isn't any good to go running for your dad For the only time since you were born he's had to spend with you He was out of a job and he hadn't a bob He was signin' on the brew [Chorus] Remеmber, laddie, he's still your dad Though hе's working far away In the cold and heat of the hours of the week On England's motorway Sure, we'd like your daddy here, yes sure it would be fine To have him working near our home and to see him all the time But beggars can't be choosers and we have to bear our load For we need the money your daddy earns a-working on the road [Chorus] Remember, laddie, he's still your dad And he'll soon be home to stay For a week or two with me and you When he's built a motorway

Luke Kelly inspires deep and sacred feellings to me. As an offering to him I wish to translate as many of his songs as I can into my catalan language: Vine fill meu estimat i et diré què farem; despulla’t solet i vés al llit i uns fets et contaré, del papa tracten fillet meu, un home que no veus mai perquè va haver de deixar la llar, i ara és lluny de tu i de mi.

Folk music always has had the most powerful voices the world has ever seen. Not for their volume or intricacies but for their genuineness and conviction. He travelled around quite a bit and performed at benefit concerts for the Irish Traveller community, but this was mainly because he had a beautiful heart and understood the importance and sheer necessity for equality. I don't normally check where in England they're from so I'm not certain which are from the north apart from the ones from my area. I lived in London for 11 years and moved back New Years Eve 2018. I've never looked back and now enjoy a beautiful simple life on the West Coast of Ireland. Bliss. I am very grateful for the beauty that surrounds me.

My Dad worked on the -Preston by pass- which became the M6 Englands first motorway and my eldest brother was a labourer,so this song is about us I suppose( well that is what I think).

Its about all of us working class irish(English) were all forgotten these days even though the country would fall apart without us

It is about all of us who had to leave, back in the sad days when our economy was in bad shape. One of the best things about the last two decades is that emigration from Ireland is no longer compulsory. A child born today can expect to get their education to graduate level in Ireland, and can have their entire career in the country if they want. They DON'T have to leave... That is a paradigm shift in Irish culture. And I speak as someone who spent nearly half my life in other countries...

I chat to a bird in Arizona who's divorced from her military husband, Iraq changed him, he's stationed in Georgia, I sent her this song as a way to help her teach their son why daddy isn't there. Don't let war fuck your family up.
