I am a big metal fan but an older guy and I cry when I think of the great songs of the seventies. This one and recent Who song, Love Reign over me, I listened to countless times as a young man. Elton John is a genius. Few artists like him in the world. I remember buying Good Bye Yellow Brick Road. It is a kind of sad that many young people do not know this song. Thank you for bringing to life today. It was special.

@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy Good choice. I began with Madman but quickly realized what gold I had and went back to purchase those that came before. I followed him up to Rock of the Westies and gradually feel off after that. Still, he's got it in him to belt out a jewel now and again. He is a very big star IMHO.

I saw Elton in 1974. Goodbye Yellowbrick Road Tour. They opened with this song. They started with heavy fog enveloping the stage and a spiral staircase emerged out of the fog and down came Elton in full regalia as the eerie organ music played. He was wearing a very large and flowing cape and as he reached the bottom and headed toward his piano he shucked the cape while at the same time he produced a magnum bottle of Southern Comfort (this was when he still drank). He place the bottle on the piano and over the course of the 2 hour show, I'll be damned if he didn't drink that whole thing. Several times during the performance he picked up his bench and threw it into the crowd. Absolutely amazing show. I was a junior in high school and it was like my 2nd or 3rd concert and made quite an impression on me. Thanks for the reaction. Brand new subscriber.

I bought a new kick-ass stereo system with JBL L100 studio monitors at Pacific Stereo in 1973, and on the evening I brought it home, a buddy of mine came over to help me set it up and break it in. He brought two albums with him that had just been released, neither of which we'd heard before: Elton's Yellow Brick Road and Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. We uncorked a bottle of Pino Noir, lit a candle and some Nag Champa incense, fired up a joint of primo Columbian, and sat down on the living room floor in front of the fireplace to listen. OMG. Those of you who weren't around then can't imagine the incredible amount and array of great and iconic music there was in the 60's and 70's. Wow, what a time it was! ☮️🕉️

Oh God, and she's a PAINTER, too. You are not worthy, Rich! ;-) Some of my best musical memories were from when I went to Art School in York PA, '73 to '77 and had a half hour commute each way with a close friend at the same school. His tiny green VW Bug had a great stereo, and we pushed it to the max each way, every day! We'd each bring a newly recorded Cassette and treat each other to our newest 'finds'. Best way to 'learn' music. My daughter is a blues singer in Nashville, and the leader of her own band. You can only imagine the 'bedtime music' I shared with her 'back in the day.' Winston Woof, First of His Name, Master of Stuffed Toys. Well played, indeed! ;-) My own Tink (wrongly named Tinkerbell, as he was the only short-haired male in a little of six, like his sister and mother), likes the name, but also likes 'Psychokiller', due to his absolute love of showing his worth in that regard. I have a drawer-full of squirrels' tails, and he's a full Ace with bats.....

I saw Elton and his band in 1974 on the tour in support of this album. The band took the stage and the crowd was nuts in anticipation. Elton was dressed as outrageously as the photos suggest but his manner was very subdued and somber. They opened with this opus, slowly building through 11 minutes (as you note) to the rocking "Love Lies Bleeding." Ultra-tight band playing very well together. I was far too young (16) to consciously understand the juxtaposition of raw pain and jubilant rock as art imitating this brutal, beautiful life. Privileged to be introduced to live music of this quality.

Summer of '74? Elton John already had another album by May 1974 called "Caribou". I remember buying the Yellow Brick Road album in the fall of 1973. The radio stations didn't discover the hits on Yellow Brick Road until about March 1974 and for a while there he had a list of songs they were playing on the radio. "Bennie And The Jets" "Saturday Nights' Alright For Fighting" "The Bitch Is Back" "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" "Pinball Wizard" "Philadelphia Freedom" "Bad Blood" (with Neil Sadeka) and "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" (with John Lennon) were all hits in 1974.

man you are doing all kinds of classics from my day-keep it up-i don't know if kel has heard someone saved my life tonite-one of his top 5 for sure-one of those tear in your eye songs!-saw elton live at foxborough stadium where the patriots play on our nation's bicentennial [ 7/04/76] .best concert i've ever seen and i have probably been to 200-3 hours of bliss-and of course the encore was philadelphia freedom-he wore a glittered red white and blue uncle sam suit with shorts and a tall stovepipe hat-no recordings of that concert-too bad-no cell phones back then!

Such a great song. I think it's hard to expect someone to appreciate this kind of song fully the first time you hear it. I have no recollection of when I heard this the first time but I am certain that there are grooves is my brain that every note of this and hundreds of other songs fit into like well-worn paths when I encounter them. Love it!!

Hey Kel n Rich. Happy anniversary. I love your channel. I also love how you both love to be with each other. That is wonderful to see. I am also glad you got to see him. I have seen him many times in Philly. He is amazing. I love Kel's reaction to all of his early costumes from the early to mid 70s. That is the Elton that I grew up with. I need Bill and ted here. Rich and Kel if you want to see him and his "Liberace" best see Elton live at the Hollywood Bowl around 72-73. Great song. BTW his opening song at every concert I ever saw him at. I loved both your reactions. Happy Anniversary. You both should check out the movie Rocketman. You really see the early Elton. The crazy Elton of the 1970s. Great Reaction.

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is one of my five "desert island" albums. I'd recommend ANY song on it. However, one of the lesser known songs that I'd like to suggest is Have Mercy On The Criminal from "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player". The lyrics are a little dark, but the arrangement is fantastic.

Something I didn't know until fairly recently is that Love Lies Bleeding is actually a droopy red plant. "During the Victorian era, specific flowers had different meanings. Love-lies-bleeding stood for hopeless love or hopelessness in the Victorian language of flowers." It was also popular in 18th century America and in England. When I learned that it kind of changed the meaning of the lyrics for me a bit.

I'm glad they played the original version of this song and not some recent live performance of it. Elton's early songs are best heard in the same time period they were released when Elton still had his original amazing voice. I was in my early teens when this album was released. What great memories this brings back!

I love the new intro - it does a great job of telling the tale for all three or you. Also love little Winston, although at this stage my four catz probably eat his weight every day. ;-) I remember staying awake all night, with the headphones on, on my parents couch, the day I bought this now landmark album, and it still contains some of his best remembered songs. I saw him in about '72, in the Ice Stadium in Hershey PA, when the new album he was promoting was 'Don't Shoot Me; I'm Only the Piano Player.' It's funny; my brother and I 'shared' many of the same groups, each buying different albums to share. So his was 'Madman Across the Water.' Likewise with Jethro Tull, where he bought 'War Child' while I had 'Songs from the Wood.' It was only later that we each had to 'fill in' our collections.... I envy Kel for discovering all this incredible music for the first time! ;-)

It's so great to connect with this music again and feel both of you connecting to it in the same way. It's really special. I am just discovering your channel and it's so much fun uncovering all these gems and, yes, some masterpieces as well, with you.
