Central Park, 1980! I was supposed to go as a teenager, but couldn't...but as an R&B music fan, Elton wasn't exactly on my radar prior but I did like what I heard from him as a kid. He was wild AF back in the day and always had kick ass musicians playing with his band. I fell more and more in love with him and his music over the years, and now I am a full fledged fan. Mind you, my regular music tastes were funk, soul, R&B and disco...but this man absolutely made me feel differently about music in particular. The man is a musical genius and a fabulous performer. When I got into his music, I did it wholeheartedly and sincerely, and I've never looked back! His early music has so much soul and he plays like he could be sitting at the piano in your grandmama's church on Sunday morning, catching the Holy Ghost!! I kid you not. I love and respect this man soooooo much and you will feel the same once you get into his material! Also I would be remissed if I didn't mention Elton's lyricist, the amazing Bernie Taupin...it's Bernie that actually writes the lyrics but it's Elton who creates the music and usually can do it in a split second's time... Dude can write a song in less than 20 minutes and it will blow your mind...these guys are the true meaning of legends. ❤️

I am BEGGING YOU to listen to the entire album of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" from 1973, all the way through (It is a 2 record set in LP's) This album changed everything for Elton and all of us fans - AND YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST listen for the quality of the recordings - The compositions, Elton's vocals, the mixing of the tracks, the production value. THE VERY BEST!!!!!

Great reaction to a great artist! I loved Elton up until the mid 70's then not so much. As well as having a great band, his writing partner was Bernie Taupin who wrote the lyrics. EJ was hugely successful globally, especially in the UK (where he's from) and in the US. 'Funeral for a friend' is very different from most of his work being instrumental and almost 'prog rock' but it is a great show opener! It was great to hear 'Have mercy...' it is one of my many favourites. The whole 'Don't shoot me.....' and 'Goodbye yellow brick road' albums are both amazing and for me his best work. Cheers.

I was in high school and college in the '80s and I'd heard Elton John pretty regularly on radio. I liked a lot of the songs (but not all) and that was it. My college roommates decided to take a train to New York to see him live because .. why not? And live you just get one great song after another, banger ... banger ... another banger. That was when I realized what a legend Elton is. I later read an interview with him and he talked about that show as taking place at his lowest moments in life, he felt fat, unloved, he thought his performances were awful. And I was like 'wait... we all thought it was really good!'

I was 16 when I saw Elton John for the first time. My opinion about him was based on his pop stuff, most of which was not my kind of music. I was utterly blown away by his performance and told everyone that it was my favorite concert ever. The next time I saw him live was with my wife in 2019 and again was thoroughly entertained. His older stuff and ability to bring it to a live audience make him unique.

My teenage boyhood idol! I still think Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is one of the greatest recorded tracks I have ever heard, and for me personally his best work ever. I know this is live, so this will be interesting. The second part, "Have Mercy" I'm guessing may be "Have Mercy on the Criminal" from his album "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player." So this should be interesting. One thing I have noticed, as I've seen Elton John's live performances before is I've been very impressed by the quality of the music live. Very good sound engineering, better than many other bands I've heard live and been disappointed with. This should be interesting! Let's go!!!!!

The original recordings of these songs from "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" were recorded when he was about 25-26 years old. . .think on that one for a minute. He used to sing effortless falsettos, but the years and a throat operation and a singing coach taught him to sing the tenor voice he uses in his later years. Also good to see his classic lineup of Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on the drums, whose drumming I absolutely adore! The only one missing from the classic linup is Dee Murray, who, sadly passed away in 1993. In any case, the enormous discography of Elton John represents a rabbit hole that if you go down it, you may never come out! But I don't think you'll mind, and I certainly won't! Here's hoping that you take the Elton John journey!!!

A better introduction to Elton John would be Rocket Man or Tiny Dancer (Live on the BBC from 1972) or Saturday Night's Allright for Fighting or a number of others. Best version of Funeral For a Friend is the Live in Madison Square Garden One Night Only concert. Or go ahead and listen to the studio version on the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album. Elton John is the fourth biggest selling act of all time, behind Elvis, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson. He has had more top ten hits in the U.S. than any solo artist. He has sold somewhere around 300 million records in his career.
