20 years later shortly after the calendar rolled over from 2019 to 2020 we got hit with a new crisis we didn't even see coming.

January 31st 1999 I was with my family riding the elevator to the top of my dad's office building to watch the fireworks... and the elevator STOPPED, and the lights went out. For a full minute we were all panicking thinking it was really happening. Then the lights came back on and we rode up.

I was a programmer and tech support engineer in the 90ties. I can assure you that the y2k problem was very real. Companies have invested a lot of resources to check their software and eliminate this problem. Thanks to these efforts, a lot of problems were avoided. I ran into some y2k problems in the beginning of 2000, but without all this preparation , the situation would have been much worse.

I was 7 and nobody told me about this Y2K bug. I found out during the 2012 doomsday hoax. Which is interesting because the 2012 doomsday hysteria was also about a Calendar but Y2K was a way more serious threat apparently.

It was only not a problem because people spent a lot of time fixing it. The collective amount of money spent on combing through systems and upgrading software and replacing hardware wherever a two-digit year was around $500 billion. A handful of mostly harmless bugs still made it through-libraries sometimes issued thousand+ dollar late fees, for example. On a related note, the Y2K Bug knocked Berlin’s emergency dispatch phone number, forcing the fire department to patrol the city that night.
