Spider-Man The Movie Game Comparison | PS2 vs Gamecube vs Xbox vs PC

Spider-Man's earliest iteration into the new Millenia, Spider-Man The Movie saw a multi-plat release based on the movie, and while it doesn't have much to stand from its predecessors, I think it's a worthwhile title to talk about. I take a look at comparing each version, to see what works for you, and all on original hardware. Enjoy guys!

Bump out more of these videos, my man. I own GC, PS2 and Xbox and currently going through their library mostly. So this kind of videos are really nice way to get an idea about multiplatform games. I was mainly PC gamer in early 2000s and only played PS2, Xbox and Dreamcast in local game centers occasionally so this is a new territory for me.

Some channels just do framerate or graphis comparison without commentary. But your videos are good to watch. Must take a lot of work, i imagine. Good job 👍

Oh absolutely you got no idea! I think it's about 2 months if I go from start to finish, given life stuff as well but essentially entails capturing, scripting recording and my favorite...editing :3 I might consider controller more often because that is a deciding factor as well.

The first video game I’ve ever touched in my life! Since I’ve played it on PS2 and since I have a physical copy of the game, it’s definitely my choice, and while visually it looks kinda worse than the other two ports, the gameplay controls is what really shines and will always be my go to version to play.

Spoiler alert! Xbox is the best because better graphics and Kraven levels. An Xbox is really the only 6th Generation console you needed as it's has the best specs = the best graphics, performance, load times and everything else! Only exceptions though are the Sonic games and Monkey Ball Deluxe because Sega always struggle to make quality ports.

I have no idea. I do have the smaller revision but Jesus the travel distance between buttons is one of the most annoying geelings. There is alot I don't like about that controller

@@Kelphelp might be godsend for fighting games. I have a duke controller with several S controller. I haven't used Duke much because left analog rusted and makes jerky movements but if i fix that. That Black and White button location might make it good for 6 button fighting games, i reckon.

I used a 34 inch LG, so goes up to 2560x1080. This monitor for me is incredible and ticks all my personal needs.

Great vid I love Spider man haha. I prefer the PS1 Spider man, but this is very interesting. When you mentioned the camera problem with the ps2 I instantly thought of Kingdom Hearts lmao and Nocturne and then you brought them up right away

Exactly I had to. It's pretty amazing hoe Activision was able to solve this control scheme well beyond any other company at the time. It feels very natural to playing the game.

Spiderman the movie game is a solid game really. It's a 7.5 to 8 in my opinion. It isn't as amazing of a revalation as the PS1 game was because that game was a pleasant surprise. This game is good though. It isn't bad no matter how you stretch it. It's no massive hit like other games were but it is definitely a fun game, other than the tower climb level.

Guess you never heard of controller adapters/converters. With GameCube I had to daisy chain a Book PS3/4 to PS2 adapter into a Gemini PS2 to GameCube adapter and it worked however the Xbox part of the adapter didn't work and I have not been able to find an OGX360 to use modern controllers on the original Xbox.

Why didn't you just use a standard 4:3 resolution for the pc port? It doesn't make sense that you would modify the exe with a hex editor to force widescreen and then complain that it's ugly...

Because the PC Port doesn't do windowed or anything close to that. Full screen is the best it can do

@@Kelphelp Ya... I mean just run it in the default 640x480 resolution in full screen. Every monitor should support that mode. It will help with the game crashing too. It was another typical low effort port to the pc, admittedly, but you should have been able to get it to run out of the box without modifying the executable.

To a degree it does work, but recording via OBS a very difficult task. It wouldn't allow window capture, game capture or anything. Display capture is the only ine that worked and at 480p it wouldn't be scaled properly specifically on OBS. There are alot of challenges not show when producing these videos mind you

@@Kelphelp I understand and appreciate what you're trying to do. You should have mentioned that in the video, though. This game was designed way before pc capture streaming was even a thing so you have to take that into consideration. Why didn't you just record it the same way as the consoles via a capture device (I'm assuming)? If those scaled property surely the pc output would have as well?

I work with the equipment I have and I dint have an old retro PC laying around nor have i found the need to use one at all since everything from DOS to current works fine on Windows 10 aside from a small selection. This is one of those for me. Even if that is true and it wasn't meant for capture most people will most likely try it on a modern PC to get it running, and especially since this is technically abandonware w/ no way to play other than the original disk. I get you man, and wanting things to be hyper accurate, but I am legit just one guy working on this. There is only so much I can do.

Resolutions aside, I just wanted to note the PC version is practically hassle-free as long as you're on Windows 7 or older. Pretty impressive for a game developed for Windows 2000. I don't know what it is about Windows 10 that messed it up, but I can personally attest there were very little issues before Windows 10. The only exception for me is a Win 2K laptop I have where keyboard controls are unresponsive. Every older desktop I've used had no issues.

@@Kelphelp After the official patches on a capable PC, it functions like any decent PC port should of the era - consistent frame rate, bindable keys, basic graphics quality settings, every standard 4:3 resolution, etc. Not as customizable as some PC games but fully serviceable for 2002. No broken effects or scripts like Arkham Knight's original PC release. I myself have a question about the Xbox version though (apart from the fact I find the color palette of your console footage more movie accurate than the PC version, especially at night) - the demo for this game from one of the Xbox magazine disc had a weird control quirk where turning the camera and running at the same time would not make spiderman rotate with the camera. Forward would still be forward after turning the camera 90 degrees unless you came to a dead stop and pressed forward again. This made basic movement very difficult, almost impossible. Did they fix this in the retail copy of the full product?

Because of this video, a PC port of the console versions of Spider-Man 2 probably would’ve had the same problems as the previous game and the modding community would likely be the same as Spider-Man 3 on the PC since back in the early 2000s, a lot of PC ports were barebones.

The lighting is broken on PC, worse visual effects, etc. Really not worth the resolution upgrade, besides you can emulate the Gamecube/Xbox versions and get higher resolutions there.

I think you'd have a much better time playing it on Xbox if you used the controller S. The fat duke is a horrible controller and is not a good way to play the Xbox whatsoever. The controller S is probably my favorite controller ever tbh

The PC version is the worst port because it doesn't run perfectly on a system it wasn't designed for? I wasn't aware you could run the console versions at 4K 60 FPS on Switch, PS5 or Xbox Series, criticizing a port because it's not compatible with systems made 20 years later is pretty ignorant. Also, last time I checked the standard input method on PC in 2002 was the keyboard, not a controller. The fact that it works at all with a controller AND lets you rebind buttons is testimony to how much care went into this port, if anything. Anyway, the Xbox version is objectively the best simply because it has content the other versions don't. And while it may not be to everyone's liking, you can't really say the exclusive levels were low effort, in terms of gameplay and visual variety they were up there with the rest of them. You may not like the controller, but unless you can think of some (objectively) game breaking fault with it, I think the Xbox version wins.

not alot of care went into the PC version, having keyboard binds is something thats normal for PC ports. the PC port is missing graphical effects and is largely very half-assed.

@@LylaFur It's not missing graphical effects, it just uses much quicker, much more efficient DirectX alternatives which was quite common at the time. You can thank Sony for that. Anyway, I'd argue being able to play the whole game as the Green Goblin is a way better feature than having cubemaps that look 3% sharper.

Never had any issues nor had to jump through any hoops to play this on PC. I played the demo repeatedly on a *white* setup I had back in the day. This demo came in the movie DVD, and was superbly optimized, as it ran smoothly on my then modest configuration. Actually, there was one hoop I had to jump through setting it up on my current Windows 10 machine. I employed a remapping software AntiMicro, as the PCGamingWiki suggested, to be able to use my XImput controller. The graphics and UI were fine. I remember being so happy that it played just like the PS1 entry I grew up playing. Felt like a remaster of sorts. You can guess my disappointment when it came to the next game, Spider-Man 2, either versions to be honest. I never cared for the open world aspect of the Spider-Man games. The traversal was awesome in Web of Shadows, but the combat was unsatisfactory, and the city and everything in it was so ugly, and with such sparse detail. I honestly thought this was the better looking game up until the PS4 game, which I never got to play, and it's finally coming to PC.

Absolutely. There are way too many variables on PC. I'm just hoping to encourage some who might have otherwise been turned off, to give it a go on their machine. I do think t's the superior version, if it works, of course ;) I have a soft spot for the way games looked in the PS2 generation. They had to convey a lot of detail using mostly textures, and we lost some of that going into PS3. Games such as Spider-Man 3 and Web of Shadows just don't stack up in my opinion.
