Has to do with mixing of viscosities, movement, and angle, but I don't know why it always moves upwards in precise intervals. Gases do this well, and most of our atmosphere is gas, so it's a layering reaction, and if you add the liquids together too slowly it won't react the same. Resonance works in a similar way, but produces different results depending on what kind of material you use and the texture of such.

I don't get a thing.. if you move the bar to the bottom, how can the fresh water move uphill? I'd expect it moved downhill as well as salty water..

I think it's because salty water is more dense. If at rest, it's at the bottom and is stable, but if tilted it is pulled by its weight downwards, while fresh water is pushed upwards due to buoyancy effect I believe.

@@Federico1871 You could also see it as the heavier liquid pushing the lighter liquid upwards as it moves down.

Grae Worster I was conducting the same experiment using Phenolphthalein as coloring material but i could not get clear separation as it is getting diffused.
