I'm always so amazed with vets. Doctors only need to know about the human body, but vets have to learn about all of the animals that we live with - and the more rare ones like kemosabe! And ontop of that only being able to go with what you can see, not being able to actually ask how it feels. The fact that one person is able to accurately treat so many different types of animals is so amazing!
@Gyarren4 жыл бұрын
I shouldn't be laughing, because I know Kemosabe must have been scared and confused during his anesthesia and subsequent examination; but his little sounds of indignation were just so funny! He's certainly not shy about letting you know exactly how he feels!

Sometimes these vet videos, while interesting, are ultimately not my favourite because usually the animals are more anxious and stressed which makes me anxious and stressed. However, this was just adorable because we get to see complete adoration and care from both Jessie and Dr. Card. I especially loved how Jessie was petting Cheeks comfortingly when he was stunned in the belly up position and when the parrot, Joy, was done getting her beak and nails trimmed, Jessie was sweet talking Joy and Joy put her face up to be pet through the bars and fluffed herself in happiness. So lovely!!

How often do you usually need to anesthesize animals? And how do you solve the problems of anesthesia getting progressively more dangerous as they get older, since I expect there is actually more need to take care of teeth and beaks and so on? And if the animal doesn't get knocked out do you always reschedule for another appointment, or do you sometimes just increase the dosage? Thanks :)

+AnimalWonders Montana Have you ever talked to a veterinary dentist? I know he doesn't need it now, but if he did, or one of your other animals did, in the future, it would be worth exploring. I know it's pretty pricey, but I think the community would help with the costs. Just an idea.
@JenDeyan8 жыл бұрын
+Jaimes I second that idea. If Kemosabe or one of the other animals needed some prosthetic teeth and money was the only thing stopping the procedure, I would donate. I'd imagine it would be something Animal Wonders budget couldn't normally handle. Please keep that in mind as an option.

@AllisonTaitano8 жыл бұрын
Would you be willing to make a video of how you towel your birds for grooming? I have a two year old green wing who I take to the vet to get her talons trimmed once a month. She is fully flighted and is TERRIFIED of towels. If its even possible to train her to be more accepting of the towel because she gets so stressed out and over heated quickly. She flies around until they can get her in a corner and I'm afraid some day she may get injured from trying to get away.
@MelissaFlaquer8 жыл бұрын
Aww poor thing. I want to know too. Also, why does she need to trim his beak? does it grow indefinitely like a rodent's incisives?
@AllisonTaitano8 жыл бұрын
+Melissa Flaquer No I take her to get her talons trimmed. (nails) :)
@AllisonTaitano8 жыл бұрын
+Melissa Flaquer Her beak is fine. It naturally files itself down by chewing on toys so I don't have to worry about that part.
@MelissaFlaquer8 жыл бұрын
+Allison Taitano I mean the bird that Jesse has in the video. I thought that you might know because you also have a bird
@AllisonTaitano8 жыл бұрын
+Melissa Flaquer The only reasons why a beak would over grow that I know of are liver damage or the bird doesn't chew on toys that would naturally file it down like wood. Also a lot of parrots that have "scissor beak" tend to over grow because it doesn't get filed down correctly when chewing since the upper and lower beak don't align properly.
@peeperscreepers62638 жыл бұрын
Is there a specific reason why Kemosabe has teeth problems? I know he had to have his top incisor removed which affects his gnawing, but are teeth problems common in Kemosabe's species in the wild? Sorry if this has already been asked or addressed.
@Birbiee8 жыл бұрын
What happens to the tooth? Will it regrow?
@animalwondersmontana8 жыл бұрын
His incisors are ever-growing, so if he doesn't file them short on his own we have to do it for him. It usually takes about 3 months before one of them gets too long and he needs help again.
@Birbiee8 жыл бұрын
+AnimalWonders Montana Thank you for answering! I should have been more specific, what I meant was his cheek tooth that Dr. Card removed. Will it grow back?
@animalwondersmontana8 жыл бұрын
+Xenovia Ikaros Any rodent tooth that has no viable root will cease to grow. So you can file down incisors and as long as they have a healthy root they will continue to grow. The molars erupt really slowly so as long as they have a healthy root, they will continue to erupt over a long period of time seeming to grow. But once the root goes bad, the tooth is a goner.
@Birbiee8 жыл бұрын
Ohh I see. Thank you for answering again! And I hope the X-ray will only show healthy teeth for Kemosabe :)

@animalwondersmontana8 жыл бұрын
Olive, the gp, was just temporarily in the small cage while we were treating her during her quarantine period. She now lives in a 30 square foot enclosure with Chili Pepper and Pickles the other cavies. Cheeks, the rabbit, prefers his small elevated space over having a larger run, even though we've tried several times to influence his personal preference. Thanks for asking!

Most likely genetics played a big factor. Also, possibly diet at a young age. But really, rodents are just prone to having issues with their teeth, and since he's in captivity we are able to help him stay healthy and live a much longer life than he would have been able to do on his own :)
