Excellent example of 'practical use' of Kemper. I own one. They are great for all uses. Try running into a pair of powered full-range speakers. Incredible. My next 'experiment' is going to be a pair of EV full-ranges in a sealed cab. If it's like all the other methods I've tried... I expect it will be great. Been dealing with guitar since the '50s... always a 'tube' guy.I never imagined I'd live long enough to see technology get to this point. "Profiling" has changed the game. Great video!

No if anything, it sounds a lot bigger mainly because the speaker cabinets are capable of producing a much bigger sound spectrum than my studio monitors or headphones. And yes, cab sim is disabled in these vids running the kemper into a power section/cab.
@FastRedPonyCar11 жыл бұрын
ONLY if you buy the kemper that has the built in power amp. Otherwise, think of the kemper as an elaborate preamp. It generates the tone but has no way to power it into a cabinet. So you either have to get the kemper with the built in power amp or use an external rack mount power amp or the FX loop return of a guitar amp or run it into the mixer of a PA system. Running the kemper to a USB or firewire computer interface for recording though does not require a power amp.

I've spent time with the axe II and I think when it comes down to it, the axe fx offers a superior effects processing solution and the kemper offers a better pure tone solution. The axefx can build an amp sound from the ground up and be ok at best IMO but the kemper NEEDS a quality amp/cab/mic/preamp setup to effectively capture a good tone but when you do, it's FAR better than anything out of the axe fx. Kemper effects are good but nothing special. everything most players would need.

I'm with you on keeping the favourite amps. It depends on the amount of sounds you need, but if you play in a cover band or somewhere else where you need a huge variety of sounds, the Kemper is worth its weight in gold. It just doesn't get any more comfortable than plugging this thing into the mixer and be ready.

yeah as long as the head has an fx loop, you can run the kemper output into the fx loop return of the amplifier. I have another video where I did this. I ran the kemper into the fx return of my little JCA22H head and then had that head running to a 1x12 mako cab

yeah I did numerous videos using the whitebox. I did one or two showing the cab itself and an attempt to capture the sonic differences with it closed back, 1/4 open back and 1/2 open back. Didn't really translate too well in the video but the difference in the room was pretty big. several other of my videos (goldea rex, JCA22H vids, picovalve, cerberus, etc) it's an incredible cab and the price is insane for the quality.

Alot of the pro's are on in ear monitors and alot of them are moving away from 4x12s and cabs in general. Don't get me wrong, I have 6 Marshall 4x12s and a 77JMP and they sit at home. Why?? because their freaking huge!! and because once you go in-ear you can get that awesome direct sound of the profiles without a power amp ,cabinet or mic placement coloring it in unpredictable ways. It's also the same every night all the time. Another benefit is you can also move around the stage and hear the sweet spot anytime anywhere, instead of standing in one spot. I changed to in-ears years ago and have been totally direct for over 3 years. I let the PA do it's job and shape the entire sound, believe me it's much bigger this way out front and is easier to mix. I use a small Marshall Class 5 as a basic small stage monitor, to fill the middle of the stage a little bit and check my rig with, but it's not miked. The other benefit of this is your not going deaf:) I first saw the idea backstage at a Forienger show about 7 years ago, and now I know RUSH and Journey are doing similar things. Look it up! I saw RUSH live recently and I have never heard a better live sound. Also saw AX7 two weeks ago and their speakers are in iso boxes and they are using in-ears. The opening bands at the AX7 show with their 4x12s sounded terrible compared imo. It's the future and the Kemper speaks to this. I just bought the Kemper! So I'm pumped, cause now I can take my 77JMP with me as a profile. But I know their will always be old school purists who will refuse to see the value of this approach. I know!! you wanna feel the air moving behind you! I'm just throwing this out there for those who might give this new school idea some thought. If it's good enough for RUSH it's good for me. Rock on!!

no keep your favorite amps. the kemper is not going to replace them for live use. it will however make a great substitute for them in the studio IF you have profiled them with the amps setup in the very specific way you want them to sound. sure the kemper can really shape the captured profile pretty well but when it does, it doesn't do it like adjusting the actual preamp controls on the amp itself will do.

Good stuff man, here comes a noob question. Could I buy a kemper and just play with headphones/line directly to a soundcard to computer and get the same good sound as if I would mic it up
@FastRedPonyCar11 жыл бұрын
yeah. be aware that some amps actually pass the fx loop through the tone stack (meaning that even if you hook the kemper into the fx loop, the amp's bass, trebel, mid, etc controls will still shape the sound) My JCA100 does this but the nitro doesn't. Does it make it bad? Nope. It just means that I have to accept the fact that I will have an extra tone stack shaping the sound if I choose to use the JCA.
@geetar8312 жыл бұрын
Since the profiles are created with a mic on a speaker, does playing the profile through a cab sound thinner than the same real amp would sound through the cab? Also are you using or disabling the speaker setting? Cheers, and keep up the great vids!
@elguitarTom2 жыл бұрын
it also depends a lot on your profile. You need to find a profile that sounds good with your power amp and cabinet. Don't use the DI profiles, they are for direct input into a Cab.

depends on the size of the stage... saw wintersun live, they used just axe fx to PA and sounded bloody awesome. if you're at a venue where you get mic'ed anyway i dont think it really makes a difference apart from the first 5 meters from the stage... i think i'll get a kemper when i got the money together, i already have a 100 watts head (engl blackmore :D ) and probably couldn't use a second one.

@FastRedPonyCar10 жыл бұрын
It's totally up to you. It can be run purely as a preamp (i.e. send it into a rack mount power amp or a guitar amp's fx loop return jack) or DI into a mixer/pa system or DI into a pair of powered monitors. Each way is going to sound different so it really comes down to which one you prefer the sound of. No way is wrong unless YOU are not happy with how that method sounds.
@FastRedPonyCar12 жыл бұрын
Probably woudln't sound a whole lot different but I'd rather put what I assume to be close to the same amount of money into a separate power amp and passive monitors. That way you don't have a single point of failure that could bring your rig down (power amps are relatively cheap to replace and any will work and same with the monitors if they blow. If you blow something with one of those powered monitors, your'e stuck having to replace it with the SAME parts.

I’ve tried the Kemper a couple of times (with monitors and headphones) but just couldn’t quite gel with it. I can hear that some of the profiles are excellent captures of the real things….certainly as good as they need to be to my ears. However there’s always something about the reproduction through monitors that is missing for me, so I’m considering something like your method here. Do you think the power amp used makes much difference? I’m thinking about building a small stereo 2x10 or 2x12 combo with a powered kemper rack built in above a couple of guitar speakers. Do you think it’s worth using some kind of rack mount valve power amp? Using the SS one built into the kemper would be very convenient if the power amp doesn’t make so much difference…. Cheers for all your videos btw: I’ve been enjoying them since the “real” Splawn stuff. Always great tones and playing.
@FastRedPonyCar9 жыл бұрын
test oh yeah there is a massive difference in every aspect of the sound depending on which profile you use. Shit profiles = shit tone no matter what. Running it to a power amp and cab will always sound very different vs monitors simply due to the frequency range each respective setup is designed to reproduce. There's a lot of trial and error before you'll find what really makes you happy with the setup of this thing. A good profile through cheap speakers isn't going to sound good and a bad profile through the best speakers isn't going to sound good.

@FastRedPonyCar10 жыл бұрын
Depending on your budget, I would look at the VHT/Fryette power amps, the mesas or even one of the old peavey tube power amps. I personally wouldn't really go with a solid state power amp but I know there are some companies making 1 rack unit amps specifically for modeling devices that may work. I just haven't played through any to give a good assessment. For what some of those high end solid state power amps cost, you could just buy a really good used tube rack mount power amp. If you're only going to be using it in the studio, you would only want to run the kemper DI into your interface. The kemper is untouchable in the studio IMO. I've played/owned all the popular modeling devices and the kemper is in a league of it's own and absolutely lives up to every bit of hype.

Thanks for the immediate reply! I know exactly what you mean, that's exactly my problem. The profiles I've tested so far are great through studio monitors or through real cabs at low volumes, but through real cabs at high volumes they sounded bad and mostly FELT bad. Loose botom end and thin-sounding. That's why I asked if you got that sound at high volumes, because I'm thinking of testing your profiles which sound great! And if you have any suggestions of other marshall-esque profiles that sound great at high volumes through real cabs, please let me know. Thank you very much.

A lot of the feel is also based on your power amp. I would say you're almost certain to get a better feel from a tube power amp like the Fryette powerstation (love mine) or the FX loop return of a tube amp but I've been reading good things about those new seymour duncan solid state power amps. They cost as much as tube power amps though so thats why I went with that. I also considered a used VHT/Fryette two/ninety/two. Their LXii looks like it will be rad but they've been teasing that thing since like 2013 or something so I've all but given up hope that it will go into production.

So you don’t need a power amp with the Kemper or is that the bottom rack in video? How many watts is it?

My kemper was the unpowered version so think of it as a glorified effects processor. You still need a power amp of some kind or a powered speaker if you want to hear it. I'm not sure how many watts the old Peavey unit was but it was a dumpster rescue and sounds pretty bad compared to something like a Fryette power station or literally any other decent power amp. Kemper make a powered unit with the power amp built in so you can send directly out of the kemper into a normal guitar cabinet and there are companies who make power amps that slide into the back of the non-powered kemper to essentially do the same thing.

Rope Head you should be able to run a single cable from the headphone output or either output on the back into the fx loop return of most guitar amps. I only used this one because it was free. If you have a bit more money to spend, there are some decent inexpensive tube power amps from carvin or peavey or even a used mesa that would also work well. The Matrix GT800FX is a really popular power amp that the axe fx guys use but I've never tried one myself.

Dude, I love your Splawn QR profiles. Do you run your Kemper this way live for stage volume, or did you end up with a FRFR?

I use my silver jubilee and whitebox cab on stage. kemper stays at home in the studio. Edit: main reason is because I'd be waaay less upset if something happened to the marshall since it's easy to just buy a new headshell or take it to Granger amps in town to have him look at it. If something happened to the kemper like some random drunk guy/girl falling and knocking it over (happend a few times with the splawn but it's an unkillable beast) or a drink gets spilled on it, it would probably be a very expensive fix after sending it off to Germany. Nothing inside the kemper is cheap. The marshall is filled with 50 cent caps and resistors lol

I think so but I'm not 100% sure. a lot of the user created profiles are hit or miss. I've uploaded quite a few under my username.

It really depends on the power amp. The peavey I used in this video is a pile of crap and I only used it just to see what would happen. It's passable but not ideal. Even the tiny little JCA22H offers much better dynamic response in terms of picking and what not than the peavey. Step up to something like a VHT or Mesa power amp and you'll have something truly awesome.

You do not know how cool that noodling sounds when your having a beer but i forgive you :)

I agree. The peavey is a very cheap power amp though. I think a higher quality solid state power amp would sound better than the peavey but I still think a nice tube power amp would sound best. It would just weigh a lot more. I would love to own a VHT power amp to use with this.

hi. i got an engl tube poweramp. the only way to connect the kpa and my poweramp is to go with 4cm right?

you could run left and right outputs of the kemper into the left/right inputs of the power amp.
