@kemushichan I learned about it through blogs and KZbin when thinking about moving to Japan (not wanting to wait ten years for PR). I wasn't eligible at the time but set about an entire multi-year action plan (got N1 in my home country, did a part-time/online Japanese MBA for 35 points, got a 3-year visa through JET) and got lucky with +10 points for my old university, +10 points for "innovation" from working for a Japanese startup, and the rest is age/experience. Zero salary-related points 🥲but it magically all worked out! Hope more people can learn about and apply for it!

Also for days of the week, Sunday-Wednesday for me! あけおめ~ I enjoy Wed and Friday for YT videos, but I also have a more flexible work life so I'm often watching YT in the BG. It's funny how this video came up during an interesting time with me. I started watching your channel back in 2014, when I was in undergrad and had received a Gilman scholarship to study abroad in Japan. I did a semester abroad in 2015 and then again (also to Japan) in 2017 because I loved it so much. Then I felt a lot of pressure to not really continue my studies, because I think I could not really imagine me (at the time) living and working in Japan. Of course, now I'm much older and definitely want to make it happen. I'm working as an attorney in NYC, but I'm not too happy here. And I realized a lot of imposter syndrome really held me back. Anyway, I won't ramble for much longer, but I am excited to see you back and healthy, and am very excited for new videos. Who knows, maybe I'll meet you IRL in Tokyo. Thank you for continuing to make videos for us.

Kudo would be a great hobby for you! Do not be intimidated by the size of the bow, it is about the same pull back tension as a western bow. I have done both and the only difference was how to aim and your stance. This is just my personal opinion of course! Best of luck.

I would LOVE if you picked up and showcased Kyūdō! I had the chance to watch some sessions at a cultural centre in Canada, and also saw it in Kyoto once. It is a fascinating martial art to me, not learned for self defence [cause who carries a bow around with them all the time], but more a mental art. Thank you for the update.

I have a PR in Japan and did the application paperwork all by myself. I would say, if one is a corporate employee with a regular salary, pays tax and has no criminal record, the Japanese government will give the PR as long as all required documents are submitted. For freelancers, that could get a bit tricky. The "contribution to Japan" requirement is optional for applicants who are sei-sha-in. However, if a freelance applies for PR, the "contribution to Japan" requirement would heavily translate into concrete proof such as academic paper, publications and some sort of key position in an organisation that is closely related to Japan (and like what you said newspaper clipping, but one or two clippings would not be much of help unfortunately).

Friday is cool. Also didn’t get an update about the previous video which is strange since I’ve been subscribed since I was still in school. I’m such a language and culture nerd (though I focus on various countries in Asia) that I’d say the first two that came to mind is kyudo and shodo, mostly due to how much they were advertised to me in tours there. I never went on any as I had to work the flights forward and back but I’m happy you are out of the work situations and I hope you have a great new year!

Something I have been trying to look into is how to become a teacher in Japan. No, not an ALT. But a lead teacher at an International Baccalaureate school or some other type of school that hires foreigners and hopefully had a student focused approach. When I try to look information up I get a lot about ALTs and JET but that is not what I'm interested in!

When I studied at Hokudai, I joined a club that combined (traditional) choir, taiko and traditional dance (the ones you can also see at those huge festivities). The dances often were accompanied by flute. If you like marching band and already know how to play a woodwind, something like taking part in these very traditional festivities seems like the perfect combination of your hobby and something VEEEERY Japanese 😅. Unfortunately I have no idea where to start looking for those clubs. Good luck on trying out new hobbies. As a mom myself, it can be difficult to squeeze in time for oneself.

Fridays work great! I’m sorry that you went through all that with work. It’s a pain, I’m sure. I don’t hear about this side because all of my friends married a Japanese national, so it’s like 🤭 (spouse visa!!!) hahah I’ve recently gotten really into crocheting, so I wonder if fiber arts would be something you’re interested in? Japan has its own crocheting techniques, yarn culture, or just fiber culture that is completely different than the US. Being into fiber is a bit niche, and you’ll be connected to people who own the animal farms or fiber farms (bamboo, linen, cotton), etc, so it could build a bigger community for you. Just a thought! 😅 no need to take me up on that. Looking forward to all of the videos!

PS : regarding the Hobby... Isn't there maybe something you could do with the kids so you kill two birds with one stone? Like a kids reading club? Like volunteering at the international kids library in Ueno? Something where you can also take your kids, or at least the eldest... I've been wanting to learn Mahjong... But a friend recommended me to learn Go... She talked me about ヒカルの碁. Apparently it was the Queen's gambit of Go 😂 regarding art, the tokyo university of the arts has short workshops for lifelong learners, like a couple of days long.. Glad to know you weren't affected by the recent earthquake. Been here since the Difficulties of Japanese series Yeah, permanent residency is extremely hard to plan for and get. I'm finally up for it this year in spring after three years on the point based resident visa which is similar to the HSP visa. I meet all the requirements (language, personal, employment, etc.) except...MONEY. In most cases, applicants for expected to earn double the gross national income--that is roughly 65,000 USD in a society that earns a bit less than half that in my age group. Freelance income is taxed at 3.3% while salaried income is taxed at a progressive rate. So using freelance income or combining it with your salaried income works against you unless you pay an accountant to make the adjustments (and raise the amount you pay in taxes the following year 👀😒). It´s a mess here.

@@kemushichan well I am actually in South Korea (sorry I forgot to specify that). But yes it’s a very similar set of struggles to what you’re going through now. I’ve been comparing the process of getting PR between Korea, Japan, mainland China, and Taiwan…and Taiwan is bar far the easiest place to immigrate to, if I’m understanding correctly: stay employed for two years or more earning above minimum wage and staying out of trouble…that’s it lol there is currently no language requirement or deep cultural understanding requirement, but of course having those in place can only help the applicant’s case. Kimono should be your new hobby! There’s a great ecosystem of kimono dressing teachers, sellers and wearers young and old and so much to learn. You’ll also project deep knowledge about the culture, and Japanese ppl will respect you even more for it. And you’ll be able to dress in kimono for your daughter’s 入学式 in a few years!! Most KZbinrs upload on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning EST (New York time) bc most views happen on the weekend. You’re more likely to get your audience to watch right away during these times. Even if your audience isn’t US based, you’ll want to release at that time to catch the higher ad value American audience.

I already have my own, the documents and conditions were difficult, but somehow my wife and I overcame the situation. Normally in japan you need at least 10 years to apply permanent residency but if you are married with japanese person it would be 3 years to apply it

I don’t think you could go wrong with Kyudo. In my experience (I’m a Nidan), local Kyudo groups are very welcoming. A good KZbin channel to check out regarding Kyudo is that of my friend, “Jess in Tokyo/Budo Life with Jess”.

Hobbies.... how accessible is making pottery in your area? Checking out ceramics/pottery is one of my favorite things to do when I visit Japan. I think it would be so fun to make some pieces!
