Ken Block Flat Out Through the Forest: Raw Onboard Rally Footage at Southern Ohio Forest Rally

Enjoy this raw, uncut onboard footage from Stage 2 of the Southern Ohio Forest Rally. With lots of surface changes, early morning rain, gravel tires on the slippery tarmac and not to mention, Travis Pastrana waiving us on as his car unfortunately burned to the ground - (no one was injured), SOFR proved to be an awesome event. Ken and Alex Gelsimino piloted the 90’s Ford Cossie V2 against a line up of modern machines and still managed 2nd place overall!

Right!? I'm not fully educated on what the passenger communicates, I do know a little bit though. As an example when he says something like (left 80, 6 wide or long) means going 80 plus in 6th gear with the pedal to the floor.

From what I know of Rally he's calling out distances and the degree or turns. The speed is irrelevant but can be guided by what the navigator is telling him. Crest long indicates a long uphill. They are there to remind the driver what is coming up, etc.

@@GingerChris1502 Well yeah I was trying to figure out how much time between each call and the actual turn was. I get the number system. They explained this in a previous video. Also I remember Ken saying one time he just switches off and just basically does what is being dictated mostly.

VolvoValor varies between teams, my dad prefers 6right as fast where some drivers prefer 6right as a slow corner, I know drivers to use degrees aswell. But calls are also to drivers preference as some drivers want it calling as they are at the corner and someone may want to know it two corners in front of the one he’s calling. Hope that helps!

I think in rally lingo allot of the weird pronaunciations of some words are intended so that you can hear clear difference in similar sounding words over all the noise n stuff.

I don't know whats more impressive... his driving skills or Gelsomino's stomach, I mean, I can't look at my phone for 5 seconds on a straight road cause I get sick and this guy here chilling and reading out stuff while the car goes sideways on a bumpy road at high speed. I like how Alex will call in chunks of 2-3 at a time and then repeat the 2nd part of the call track as Ken does the first bit. I wish the codriver in Dirt Rally 2.0 would call like that. Instead I get thrown a continuous stream of information without any repeats. I find it easy to get lost or forget what was said earlier, even when watching other people play, whereas with Alex's style of calling, it's easy for me to keep it all visualized.

As somebody that lives in Vinton County Ohio I spectated much of the staging areas. So awesome to see these cars in person. The roads that they drove on are the same roads I learned to drive on “attempting” much the same things as Ken did, just much slower and much worse lol. This event was probably one of the biggest things to ever happen around the area.

thats because they are straight cut. straight cut gears are called straight cut because of the way the teeth are cut on the gears compared to a standard cars gearbox which are cut at an angle. a standard manual gearbox has synchros to help a smooth gear change. a straight cut box does not have synchros because the gears match perfectly for engine speed for smooth gear change. a normal h pattern manual straight cut gearbox has uts gears changed by a a gear stick. a sequential gearbox uses actuators and air pistons to change its gears, but its still a straight cut

The cossie engine is really efficient in low/mid range rev, that's so satisfiying. No need to make it scream like hell to put times down, impressive. And what a smooth drive. Congrats to the driver and co-pilot for this performance. Cheers !
