Official audio for Ken Boothe's chart-topping version of Bread's pop hit, 'Everything I Own' .
The song was written by David Gates in memory of his father who passed away in 1963 before the singer-songwriter's success with Bread.
Gates later recollected that the song's title originated from a time when he had very few possessions, but sent his mother an orchid for her birthday, an act that so moved her that his father told him that he could have had "anything she owned" in return of the gift.
Boothe's version made number 1 in the UK charts on 26 October 1974, staying at the position for three weeks, ultimately spending a total of 12 weeks in the national Top 50.

EVERYTHING I OWN LYRICS
written by David Gates
You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, set me free
The finest years I ever knew
Is all the years I had with you
And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
And I would give anything I own
Just to have you back again
Is there someone you know
That won't let you go
And taking it all for granted?
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And you don't hear the words they say
And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give anything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to talk to you words again
If there's someone you know
That won't let you go
And taking it all for granted?
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And you don't hear the words they say
And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
And I would give anything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to talk to you words again
Just hold you once again

David Gates of BREAD wrote this about his father in 1972. Many people think it's about a broken relationship, but it's about the loss of his father. This great version by Ken Boothe reached number 1 in 1974, as did Boy George's version in 1987. I lost my father in 2010 and miss him every day. To everyone who has lost a parent or loved one, this great song is for you. 💜

@@suraya1224 Yes. Agreed. Personally I think all original songs are the best versions. If it weren't for the originals, then cover versions would never exist. And the version by Bread will always be the best.

I feel you. Widowhood is not easy to handle. I too, lost my spouse back in January. Looking through photo albums and seeing images of our happiness together gives us comfort. One of the most difficult times is when we want to interract with our deceased spouse and they are not there to share conversation or share a smile or a kiss. That hurts so much! So hold onto those memories of the best times! Love never dies!

I just accidentally rediscovered this song. When I was young my mum threw my dad out and his mental health became pretty bad. After that he struggled to hold down a job and slowly he became homeless. Before my dad became homeless, my younger brother, my younger sister and I used to eat dinner at his house once a week. I remember my dad would dance around the room super happy, singing this to song to us. Although we were young we could tell he wasn't happy, that seeing us was bitter sweet. Now I listen to this song and I remember my dad how he used to be, when he was young and healthy, dancing around the living room singing this song to us in earnest.

Written by David Gates and originally a #5 smash in the US in 1972 for his band Bread, this version gave the songwriter his first #1 hit in the UK two years later as by Ken Boothe. It was one of my favorite Bread singles, but when Ken got ahold of it, the song got a deeply personal and, yes, soulful performance. Mr. Boothe, one of the most distinctive voices to come out of Jamaica, is now a legend in Reggae music and this is one truly potent reason why.

The composer of this song wrote it about when his father passed away. My ol' man passed July 4th, 2021...about 8 hours before his 83rd birthday. I would give everything I own to have him back again even just for those 8 hours. My brother took him away in February 2020. I never saw him again. This song, the words, Ken Boothe's voice is where I am today. He taught me to be the man that I am today. He taught me to read even though I am dyslexic when I was 4 years old. He was a true Southern gentleman in the finest sense of the term. He was an "Old bred US Marine". He was my dad.

THERE IS NO KILLER VIRUS. COVID 19 IS A HOAX, A SCAM, A LIE....WE ARE HAVING OUR FREEDOMS TAKEN FROM US BY A SMALL GROUP OF BILLIONAIRE PSYCHOPATHS

@@richardichard4237 Most people are too scared to see the truth, the virus does exist, but the price we are paying is ultimately going to be our perceived freedom and rights and yes, they are billionaire psychopaths. I wouldn´t worry too much though. Listen to some good tunes and forget about the world. It will keep on spinning regardless ;)

This song was playing in my dreams this morning. I woke up and couldn't understand why. It hadn't been in my mind for a while. And then I realized today, June 20, 2021, was Father's Day. Happy Father's Day, Daddy. It's been 29 years since you're gone. I treasure the 24 wonderful years we had together. While you were with me, "you sheltered me from harm" and now your memories "keep me warm." Signed, your loving daughter.

When I first heard this song I was overwhelmed. I don't know how many times I've heard this song. I didn't know the song was by Bread Band. Some people love a song so much that it makes the original song even more beautiful with their own touches. I still listen to this song today.
