I can understand Steve referring to Helen as a friend despite the fact she gave him the elbow after all those years. As a business owner I have worked for individuals and companies for twenty or thirty years and then reached the end of the road with them. The folks I have worked for are acquaintances rather than friends but I know I owe them thanks for using me and I have enjoyed perks along the way working for them. Dear old Steve was a consummate broadcaster and a decent kind man. We will miss his input into our lives.

And had a lump in my throat as he closed his last ever Afternoon show still listened to his Sunday Love Songs and when I heard he had passed away I genuinely was gutted stunned . I was 18 when I started listening to him and 59. On his last Afternoon show he put a smile on my face every time I listened to his show. I was lucky enough to see him on two occasions 1982 at the Radio 1 Road Show 4th August Blackpool . And a year later when Steve , Fluff Freeman and Simon Bates did a Show oct 1983 Stewarton Community Centre Scotland . For me, R2 has now become unlistenable to during the week. The bland, grey, pale imitations who have replaced the likes of Steve are boring. They are not DJs, they are presenters encouraging monotonous people to ring up and telling us where they have been on holiday or where they are going on holiday or how many kids they have got or expecting and how much fun they are having. Boring. Cheers Steve, proper DJ.
