The working class has lost another hero in losing Ken. What an honour it is to have been in the same union as you and Ken, the NUM. Ken was a big part of the Socialist Labour Party, formed by Arthur Scargill, as well. Arthur and Ken saw the way the Labour Party was going early on, ie, betraying the working class. Its fitting Ken died in Bulgaria as that was the holiday/convalescent destination for workers of the former Soviet Union to recuperate from illness or injury. Condolences to his family.

Good early afternoon Dave. I was born in 1948 in a small Town south of Manchester called Urmston. An area of Urmston is Davyhulme the Birth place of the NHS. I was actually born in Urmston Cottage hospital as the first NHS hospital wasn't quite completed. The hospital is still there - originally called Park Hospital. When built it was also a teaching hospital. The nurses accommodation and teaching area are still there, but both have been empty for decades. Quite a lot of the Doctors accommodation is still there, fenced off and boarded up. During the Blair era, a state of the art wing was added but closed down almost immediately when The Conservatives got re-elected. On top of that a whole section of the Hospital has been mothballed since. Bit by bit it has been deliberately corroded, and a sizeable amount of the grounds sold off for upper end housing. Only a matter of time now before it disappears.

Terrible news Davy.. Ken was a lad that everybody could trust. A man of honour and consistency, whose pursuit of social justice was pretty well central to his warm character and human decency. My memory of him will be as a fine comrade who never fell for all the bullshit that the hostiles in the mass media heaped on Arthur at every opportunity. Ken always saw through all that poison and with courage never failed to stand up to be counted. A great and sad loss indeed. RIP Ken.

What a crying shame that the beautiful miners' building is in such a sad state. Why don't people see that we will never be constructing buildings like this ever again, and that the ones we still have need to be saved for future generations, not least from heartless, money-grubbing, cheapskate developers. There aren't the finances or the skills or even the will to build like this any longer, and as a retired architect I can tell you that architecture as an art died at the end of the 70's; all we get these days are Norman Foster's steel and glass boxes that already look tired and dirty, (with the exception of "the gerkin" whoich I do quite like), or else the banal brick crates filling up the so-called "new East End". Very sad. Also, I hope you aren't too poorly Dave,....didn't know you may not be in full good health.

Dave , sorry to hear about the passing of your friend Ken. Having listened to him talk about your NHS it seems like he was a fine man. When one has to listen to likes of 30p Lee, Farage (with his German passport ) or that moron Johnson it shows just how far Britain has faded away..I would never have been a fan of anything British because of my Irish heritage but people like you , your late friend Ken ,and other hard working people who get no recognition (don't mind a peerage !!! ) makes it easy for me to stand side by side with you all because justice is justice, it means the same in any language. Admiration and respect come to mind when I watch and listen to your posts. A caring , socially aware and kind person like yourself brings people together.
