Ken Doherty is a good man . He visited my cousin when he was sick child in hospital. I met Ken also , he is a great guy

I just heard Ken on an interview talking about how when he arrived back in Dublin the airport was packed with people waiting to cheer him home and he went through Dublin on an open top bus. The next year he reached the final also but lost to John Higgins and this time when he got to Dublin airport nobody was waiting and he had to get a Taxi home. Ken has a great sense of humour! 😄

Been working with Ken this week. What a top guy and still sharp as a player. If anyone can, Ken can! 😉

I think Ken's the most likeable man in the sport.

Ken completely outplayed Stephen in 97. I don't actually Ken got the credit he deserves. To beat a guy in Hendry in almost his 2nd home was incredible.

He gets slagged off but he beat Hendry at his peak. It’s like someone convincingly rinsing Federer when he was winning everything.

The 5-0 century count and 114 points up both to Hendry were very misleading stats. Doherty was only 1 behind Hendry on 50+ breaks. Doherty scored a few 70+ breaks too.

Doherty won fair and square and the first person to say so would be Hendry

Doherty on song was tactically sound and probably the toughest player to battle against. Not flashy but didn't need to be.

Watched Ken Doherty on Stephen’s Cue Tips channel and he put up 80 some points while talking away, wasn’t even trying. He truly looks like he is half his age and can still play as good as ever.

I certainly think of Ken as a worthy champion but ironically I think he played better in some subsequent world championships where he didn't win, especially 2002 and 2003, which may be why his achievement is underappreciated by some. In the 1997 final Stephen Hendry's performance was similar to what we often saw from him later in his career, brilliant at times (hence 5 centuries) but at other times struggling with his long potting and missing easy balls. But in 2002, Stephen really had to be at the very top of his game to edge out Ken 13-12 in the quarter-finals, knocking in numerous pressure pots in the decider, and it was a similar story with Mark Williams in the 2003 final.

Ken can't keep to the standards of today. I do like Ken it a shame why some players don't have it.

I love watching Ken Doherty play.... even if it's only because it means I don't have to listen to him commentating.

Irish sporting hero. In times when we celebrate lads from the Southern Hemisphere that cone here to play rugby for us on massive money then fuck off as quick as they came in (CJ something something?), then ultimately fail. Ken is an actual IRISH legend

Just looking at the stats for this match and the world final last week.Judd trump played quite a bit better than both Hendry or doherty did in this match and going be Ken's stats and Ronnie O'Sullivan's stats last week if they played each other with Doherty playing like he did here it's very easy Ronnie O'Sullivan would have won 18-6 or 18-7 it really shows how the standard in snooker has gone through the roof since back then, I'm not trying to take away from these lads because we know Hendry especially could play quite a bit better.

Doherty did not exactly "Win despite Hendry completely dictating things". It's only the 5-0 century count (and the gap between what Hendry really needed to clinch those frames I.e. mid 60's+ and the scores of each of those centuries that enabled Hendry to outscore Doherty on points) that made it appear that way. If you take the difference away from what Hendry really needed to clinch those framez and what he scored, Doherty would have been ahead on points scored otherwise. Hendry was only 9-8 up on Doherty 50 breaks some of the 8 50+ breaks from Doherty were in the 70's and 80's (more than good enough to win the frames) so those who claim it was all Hendry on the scoring but Doherty did nothing of note in terms of breakbuilding they were obviously watching a completely different match than I was.

Well Said Ken dosent get enough credit beating Hendry in a final was nearly impossible in the 90s beating Hendry by 5 frames in a final in 90s must be a rear thing i wonder has anyone beat SH by more than 5 frames in a final if so i havnt heard of it .
