The British director Ken Loach turned 75 this year and to celebrate 50 years of his film making the British Film Institute is holding a retrospective of his work.
Asked about the political drive in his films, Ken Loach tells Sarah Montague that he has not softened with time. He also explains why he believes that the world follows a downward spiral towards economic chaos and alienation.

I left school in 1964. there was always a job available. they were crap jobs, but everybody was in the same boat and there was a pay packet you could live on every Friday. loach is right. there is nothing now. no hope.

I thought unemployment was at a record low. It's interesting to make these comparisons, but this guy knows the history that brought us to this point. The economy needs to work in a dynamic way which rewards hard work and yes profit, and switching back to a model from the 50s and 60s isn't realistic.

He's being too much of an apologist for louts and thugs. Being unemployed is NOT an excuse for rioting and endangering other citizens.

It's not just about unemployment. The whole system is designed to fracture and divide. Without the low payed the system would falter and fail. Millions working in poverty. Anyone on this thread able to live on minimum wage even if its upped with some sort of help in the way of handout. Education until eighteen, clever way to disguise unemployment. Leave education with debt of 40/50 grand. Syugle to afford to save for a mortgage in an over inflated housing market driven by greed particularly in the south east where I am. Pay a Kings ransom in rent which prevents saving. North Kent coast a great deal of work is low (minimum wage) payed seasonal and zero hour contract. Even many young professionals cant expect to own priced out. The retirement age going north will be 70 no doubt soon even for manual workers crazy. If you do accumulate money or property be prepared to handitover to the state. My 95 year old mother in Law her £100 000 sheltered housing bedsit sold to pay her care home fee's £950 per week soon to runout. We are a divided society like never before and the gap is widening.
