Ken looked miserable in match one. I would be too if someone played about 10 lands, escaped an Uro and dropped an Ugin on the same turn.

If you want Magic to be a top esport with a large following, they should be amending rules to ensure that draws like that do not happen, period. While a draw can exist, to intentionally draw in order to benefit you AND someone else at the expense of another player is simply against the nature of what competition is supposed to be. There's a reason every major sport and most of the major esports require games to be played simultaneously during the last phases of the intro portions of their competitions and any talk of "drawing" or rigging outcomes is heavily punished. I like both of those players in this game, but it's a shameful thing to do to get together and agree to draw so you both win out.
@stefanrabenstein37534 жыл бұрын
From my chess experience, you can offer a draw to your opponent at any time, and you are free to walk around and watch any concurrent game. Chess tends not to have playoffs though, so it's less of an issue.
@drewbanker95312 жыл бұрын
I agree. These two happen to be friendly enough to agree to draw, but neither of them would extend this favor to "unknown" players who don't happen to be well-connected in the community. Nassif was in a position to win game 3 easily and even though Levy got unlucky with his draws, I think he played that last game really poorly (mostly has to do with how he cycled sharks that game, his timing and his going for 2/2s every time when 2/2s were not nearly enough of an asset on that board...what mattered was for him to see other cards that might answer the Nissas and to give himself the opportunity to do multiple things each turn). Unclear when they agreed to draw and how much that affected gameplay, but I think drawing like this was pretty disrespectful to the other players; it shouldn't have been allowed

why do draws exist in online games? why do draws give a point?
@stefanrabenstein37534 жыл бұрын
Afaik, draws have traditionally existed in MTG matches for many reasons (timeout, simultaneous win/loss, terminate infinite loops without exit condition). There even was at least one combo deck which was often able to execute an instant-draw combo in unfavorable game states. If you suddenly get rid of draws, you have to review and change a lot of rules. It would also increase the differences between paper and online magic, which adds confusion. Regarding your other question, why wouldn't draws award you points? I thought they did so in almost all games and sports?
@swiftdragonrider4 жыл бұрын
@@stefanrabenstein3753 I am almost 100% sure they don't award points in most sports for the reason I think they shouldn't in MTG because draws awarding points means less games getting played.

So this event is standard only? Im so confused, i want to watch pro level historic gameplay but magic makes hard to understand what matches will be historic and what wont.if someon can explain it to me thatd be great.maybe im just dumb
@PartisanGamer4 жыл бұрын
These are historic matches, all of them. The strongest decks (or lets say the decks the pro gamers collectively decided to bring to the tournament) in historic just happen to be the same decks that are the strongest in standard as well. Standard is simultaneously part of historic, so things like this may happen, especially in a highly artificial environment like this one where 32 players are playing an invitational event where they are all bringing decks that are just part of the bubble they are in. They basically collectively settled on them (either pro-actively or in reaction to what they expected others would bring).
@graysonmclester91374 жыл бұрын
@@PartisanGamer i kindof figured as much, just kindof makes me sad, i love modern but hate watching things in paper or mtgo. So i was hoping historic would be more interesting, i loved manfeilds sultai list he played earlier but who knows. Thanks!

This game kinda shows how the Japanese meta is different from EU/US meta. Ken's deck got hit by a main deck hate card that wasn't meant for him at all. Also, not sure why everyone is complaining about big ramp decks having ridiculous turns, that's what they do when not interacted with. Try playing this Omnath nonsense on the ladder and you will get abused by Azorius/Sultai/Bant control and Ohrzov/Esper Yorion all day.
@silash.55354 жыл бұрын
so you want to tell me that Omnath is fine?
@omgopet4 жыл бұрын
@@silash.5535 It's a 4 rainbow mana 4/4 that draws a card. Not exactly impressive unless you can untap with it. In any other time in standard, it would be a jank card you would mostly see on What's the deck. However, in this standard there is a 5 cmc explore that draws 5 cards in Gruul for some reason, so it gets out of hand given that it's a 4 set standard and we are still missing a lot of interaction. In historic, it's complete garbage, there are better things to do with a lot of mana in an eternal format (hint: Muxus) and Narset exists. However, in this tournament almost nobody is playing any interaction or ways to kill someone on turn 4, so you get degenerate games where ppl are resolving 4 genesis ultimatums each and seeing who rolls better. Where is Narset? Sharknado? Negate? Teferi? Embercleave? Scourge of the skyclaves? Muxus? Kethis? Monument? Winona? Yorion? Sprite dragon? Henge? Lanovar elves? But apparently, being able to go off vs decks made by people who never played the format is grounds for banning the card. But let's unban the card that lets you put 10 power on the board turn 2, because playing Embercleave mirrors all day is exactly what people wanted to stop leaving Arena en masse. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
@silash.55354 жыл бұрын
@@omgopet that's my whole point. Yes, Omnath needs some set-up, but Ramp is being pushed for years now, colorfixing is just fine and efficient landdestruction isn't being a thing! Aggro is the only thing that sometimes manages to get under that broken stuff. Embercleave should've been banned as well, like almost half of freakin' Eldraine. The power creep over the past sets simply feels like it is too much. They made a break on Theros, which was fair Magic, that's why you see almost no card from it played... I thank you for explaining where you come from on this topic
@silash.55354 жыл бұрын
@@omgopet one last thing I forgot: Ramp-cards like Growth Spiral should never ever replace themselves, otherwise you never get punished in the late game for playing them. But you should be, given the advantage it gets you in the first turns of the game.
@omgopet4 жыл бұрын
@@silash.5535 Agree 100%, stuff like Arboreal grazer and Beanstalk giant is fine, and if it was a real sacrifice deckbuilding-wise to put 3 lands/turn into play, Omnath would not even be a thing. Riley Dennis made a great comment during one of those Genesis ultimatum mirrors about how he is going out of work because he usually plays clowny decks on stream, but now playing clowny decks is just normal and everyone does it. That said, I don't think Explore effects are too good for Historic, there are very powerful things you can do there (hint: Muxus) and slow decks need a way to keep up vs efficient aggro and combos or be able to double spell vs counterspell tribals. Pretending that Eldraine never existed is probably the best short term solution.
