Seaworld claims that It is "common" for orca to have their dorsal fin collapse, but I have yet to see a single piece of footage of a wild orca with this "common" feature.
@trua71294 жыл бұрын
SeaWorlds male orcas fins collapse because they spend so much time at the surface. A fin that big with no bone or water support is obviously gonna flop. If you havent seen any flopped in a video you havent been looking. For example several orcas in South America have partially or fully collapsed fins as they beach themselves to catch seals. The reason it is thought to be sickness that flops the fins is because most of the time in the wild orcas who have that condition were injured or sick at one point so thats why they stayed on the surface
@jamesson11544 жыл бұрын
Trua712 wrong. It’s from lack of swimming.
@jamesson11544 жыл бұрын
Trua712 if it’s sickness, all the orcas at seaworld would never have collapsed dorsal fins because they have the most money to spend on medicine. So it can’t be sickness. That’s exactly what seaworld said.
@trua71294 жыл бұрын
James Son im not saying its because of sickness. Im saying its because of the extended time at the surface and being sick can make an orca do that. But at SeaWorld they already spend almost all their time at the surface doing shows, training sessions, feeding, sleeping etc so it doesnt need to be a sickness
@KinkssNCoilss4 жыл бұрын
I saw footage with a pair of males, I think they may have been brothers...can’t remember, that had collapsed dorsal fins. The scientists who were studying them named them Port and Starboard because one’s fin flopped to the left, and the other’s to the right.

Most marine mammals are curious. Fish, too. White sharks are also curious and like killer whales will spyhop to get a better view of objects of interest. In fact, curiosity is not really that rare. Whales are intelligent, but not _exceptionally_ intelligent. The domestic chicken is at least as intelligent and social as any cetacean and probably have a cognitive edge on many species of whales. We went from killing whales for fuel, industry, etc, to almost worshipping them as demigods, kindred spirits with deep wisdom and knowledge. Neither treatment is ideal. This belief in their exceptional intelligence is more religion than science.

To all yoo people that say we should not tag and research these orcas because they will be fine on their own, the research produced from this is that the orcas are not okay. The population in the Ross Sea has been declining. Why? Because of overfishing by humans of their prey, the toothfish. We would not know this if not for the research you see in this video. There is a movement to stop himan harvesting of the toothfish. Go to lastocean.org and help save these whales.

+sicbul Fear? You can't hurt orcas with that, it's like throwing paper balls to a person. You clearly have never seen orcas battling sharks (including great whites)... they can lose pieces of flesh without even noticing it. Their skin regenerates very fast, much faster than ours, and it's thick like you wouldn't believe. Would you be afraid of a chihuahua or a rat? That's what humans are to orcas. Those orcas were clearly having a good time, greeting humans, showing off, playing, etc. Anything that helps us understand how they live, the problems they face, etc. it's actually helping them too.

Astonishing footage. Beautiful and frightening at the same time. These incredible creatures are clearly fascinated by these strange humans in their environment. It's almost like going back in time, to a place where humans have very little presence or control.

They are using a hunting technique called Spyhopping and they use it to see what is above the water. They hunt in packs or pods if you will. They are incredibly smart, fast, intelligent and use teamwork to catch prey. To catch a seal that is on ice, as a team they use their bodies to tip the ice over or they can swim side by side and create waves that push the seal into the water. They hunt in a group of 40 Killer whales. They are called the Apex Predator of the sea. They have been known to save humans from drowning by using their body mass to push us up to the surface or they use their teeth to drag us to the surface. They also protect us from sharks.
@aylmaoxdxddd568710 жыл бұрын
REALLY?hahahaha
@kylethompson936810 жыл бұрын
It's all true. If you drown, they will pull you up to the surface and if you are attacked by sharks then the Killer Whales will kill them.
@aylmaoxdxddd568710 жыл бұрын
Kyle Thompson but why would they save us?
@kylethompson936810 жыл бұрын
It's an instinct. When we are in danger they can protect us just like they protect their babies. They don't eat humans because we do not taste that good, they prefer seals and other whales.
@kylethompson93689 жыл бұрын
Yep. It is about instinct. They would protect us just like they protect their babies. It is also because they are very smart creatures

Reasons why we should not hurt Orcas in any way Orcas are extremely intelligent,they are studying us and they like us That is why they never hurt us in the wild,but if we shot at them with anything and couse them pain maybe they will comunicate with each other and tell others that humans are cousing them pain and they will change their mind about us and start cousing us pain when they get the chance... I never saw someone have this kinda opinion or thoughts,but to me its interesting to think about it and sound pretty logical... We know they are extremely intelligent We know they comunicate with each other We know they pass down their knowledge to younger generations We know they learn and adapt easiely So it would be easy to assume that they may change their mind and behavior towards us if they experience pain coused by the humans....

Antarctic orca are so odd looking. Tiny dorsal fins and eye patches. Still beautiful, just different than what you usually see. Great video. Loved when they started spy hopping. I'm so jealous. I'd loved to have been there.
@kristincosentino69469 жыл бұрын
Kate Hettinger LoL yea they are quite a strange ecotype. These orcas I believe are what they call Ecotype Type C orcas. In this group of orcas they all have unique slanted eye patches. They are quite different from ecotype Type A and B orcas. The ones that we are use to seeing with the larger more oval shaped eye patches and bigger dorsal fins are mainly Type A orcas.
@westwindsailer9 жыл бұрын
Kate Hettinger there are two @ 2:35 that look different , but I think this isnt all killer whale video, I do not know what kind the other species is @ 6:55 but those are not killer whales, the blowhole is different as is the dorsal fin. minke whale , just a guess.
