I think the USA has bigger influences on Cambodia than China! The US dollars can be used everywhere in Cambodia, nearly replacing local riels. But not Chinese yuan. And as you can see, lots of Western tourists rush into Cambodia every year, and some Western old men search for improper sex with very young Cambodian girls or boys...

This reminds of Cozumel, a once quiet getaway island off the Yucatan Peninsula. My wife and I went there for our honeymoon in 1983. It was such a charming place and lovely people. Over the years we've been back several times and each time there has gotten to be more time shares and cruise ships. It has now become more of a tourist trap with businesses just trying to soak money from you. I think it's difficult for islands not to be attracted to the prospect of growth, but that seems to be a two edged sword.

I went to cambodia before. One tip from me. It would be better to just hire any one tuk tuk for USD10 per day to bring you around. Negotiate with them. Maybe USD20 for 3 days plus tips (buy them lunch, drinks, etc.) They usually will agree. Because it's difficult for them to get passengers anyway. (Edit. I'm not suggesting to short change or exploit tuk tuk drivers. But that's the "market price". At least from my experience last year.)

You have no idea how much Chinese spend on gambling. Gambling is illegal in mainland China. Macau, a small Chinese city outside of mainland China had casinos' revenue of $36 billion vs Las Vegas $12 billion in 2019. Countries like Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia built their casinos mainly to attract Chinese clients. The odds are always in favor of the house. Almost all the customers walk away losing. It's a great way to get large amount of money from the Chinese without any goods exchange.
@stephanguitar9778
@stephanguitar9778 3 ай бұрын
The vast majority of the money will floe back to Chinese business men. A certain amount to Cambodian politicians and almost none to locals as the casinos were employing Chinese workers. The crime surrounding these casinos was what the local population objected to.
@dragonfly02490
@dragonfly02490 3 ай бұрын
@@stephanguitar9778 In Kent's previous video on Laos, the manager of the casino was a local. Casinos in general do employ many locals and also indirectly. For example, they need hotel maids, housekeepers, plumbers, electricians, bell boys, security guards, restaurant workers, card dealers etc. The spill over effect would be increase sales for local economy, such as increase in ride service(taxi, tuktuk, or uber), restaurant sale, vegetable and meat market sales, local shops sales, local attraction sales, local hawkers sales etc. Even if they bring some Chinese workers, these people will still need to eat and live. That means they need to buy things and rent apartments. If you rent apartments, you need to buy furnitures, cookware, utensils, bed sheets, and basic daily living etc. And you need to see doctors and buy medicines etc when you are sick. Plus, you also see locals at the construction sites. Overall it's a great benefit for the local economy, otherwise, the local governments won't have allowed so any casinos. I don't remember which country or countries: because gambling is a vice, the local government won't let the locals gamble. Only foreigners are allowed. I generally don't like casinos. They need to be tightly regulated.

There are no American or UK projects of this type in Asia. If there were, they certainly wouldn't place Chinese on them. Why? English is the only international language and it's also the official/de facto official language in those two countries. Besides, everyone speaks English. Everywhere I go in Asia, if I'm not being addressed in the local lingo, I'll be addressed in English as people assume all foreigners speak English.

Far more than "very few". Nearly all formal words and terms originating from Sanskit-Pali are identical in both Thai and Khmer. Around 5% of the vocabulary of Khmer is shared with Thai and there are similarities among a much larger percentage than that.

Hi Ken, thanks a lot for these recent news about Sihanoukville and Koh Rong island. I sippose the cake you buy to nomad baker was made with chicken eggs. In Cambodia most of cakes are made with duck eggs that's why he was talking about chicken. (Cambodian usually privilegiate chicken eggs for cooking). One dollar a piece was very expensive and surely not local price but we can't blame them because globaly tourism is not as remunerative as before covid crisis... Love the way you describe the environnement, your reflections and your attention regarding to the young boy with the old man... One more subscriber and a ring ! PS : If you want to know more about local fights regarding Koh Rong's airport have a look to this association called Mother Nature Cambodia.

Hello, we have lived in Cambodia for 4 years and have never seen any children being abused. Do you honestly think if this was happening someone would step in and stop it. Why didn't you film it? You could have then shown it to the police if you were really worried about the child. You could have easily removed that from the Vlog as it turned out to be nothing.

Yes I thought it was very sketchy that he left that part in his video too. I mean this used to be huge problem in Cambodia, and still is, but it's definitely not open like that anymore. 10.-15 years ago, yes you might still see this kind of stuff totally openly done, but not anymore. Even locals are more aware of stuff now.

People are too quick to judge. I used to live in Sihanoukville 10 years ago and dated a divorcee with a child. We went swimming many times, albeit I was in my 20s and thus didn't raise eyebrows. I also met an older Italian gentleman that married a Cambodian woman and adopted her kids after their father ran away. But the most heartbreaking story was that of a French man in Siem Reap who was outside walking with his mixed Cambodian daughter and a tourist called him a predator... Some people should just mind their own business!

Cambodia actually has other islands more beautiful than Koh Rong but not all the locals especially Phnom Penh prople. ( some wants to keep secret 🤫 to prevent overcrowded tourism ) Cambodia isn’t well known to the world due to not good at promoting, but ngl Cambodia is so underrated and there are many more to explore.

I have checked some informations about the background of investment in Cambodia. Some are hk based companies. Some are joint ventures. Some are Chinese tycoons who moved out of China a long time ago. Most of them have nothing to do with Chinese government. Anyway Chinese influence in Cambodia has been a big thing for centuries due to history and political and economic relationship

As a Chinese, my perspecive is the Chinese investmets should bring them work opprtunity, and all the fundamental construction would improve their quality of life.If this is not the case, the problem lies not with the investment itself but with how it is managed. About the opinion you mentioned that the tourist will arise the price of the property,I am puzzled why locals need to buy properity, they don't own their properity as a local? Also, I have seen many Combodia related videos, including one where a Tuk Tuk drivers said that they are struggling to earn money because their hometown don't have many companies or tourists. Put that into perspective, the investment from China can offer more jobs, which is important for them overall. I personally cannot comprehend discussing environment protection when basic daily lliving conditions are not even guaranteed. We China and Combodia should always want to be good neighbors and cooperate. The last thing we should do is hate each other. Correct me if I am wrong.

No you are not wrong. Cambodians do appreciate Chinese investment and Chinese tourists. The country depends on Tourism, especially Chinese. But Cambodia has a not so good reputation that you may have heard. A lot of these rumors about Cambodia are well rumors and made up to create fear in the Chinese tourists where they do not want to visit Cambodia. There has always been a campaign to smear Cambodia. Also, corruption is high here, the poor locals do not benefit in Cambodia. But hopefully cooperation with China will help change that and bring prosperity to everyone.

I really hope that the local residents can also benefit from these foreign investments and that their government has strict regulations regarding employees. For example, that companies must employ a certain proportion of Cambodian workers. Otherwise, there is a significant risk that only the Chinese and high-ranking officials in Cambodia will be the ones who benefit from it. Does anyone know what the regulations are?
@pp-bf2ec
@pp-bf2ec 3 ай бұрын
Not much regulations but locals have benefitted. There's now almost +100k new jobs for locals that have been created in last 10 years. The city local population has tripled in last 10 years. The average salaries have doubled and city GPD is now 2nd biggest in Cambodia, 10x bigger, which is same size as Phnom Penh's GPD. And of course infra has improved a lot. Still 6-7 years daily brownouts very completely normal, water shortages, multiple big floods every year. No hardly any brownouts in last 4 years, only one water shortage in last 3 years and that was only due buildings constructions burst one of main pipes, and it floods maybe once a year badly (Phnom Penh for example flood multiple times still). Multiple new schools and universities have opened in last decade as well.

@@maggiechan33 I'm not local but have lived here in Sihanoukville for 10 years. Where are these angry Cambodians? The ones you read in US propaganda media, perhaps? Now of course there are some who are angry, like those who had business catering western backpacker tourists. And those tourist are gone now, of course many of those business owners ares angry. But majority of the locals are more or less happy with most of the developments happened in city. Ville is a French word and Cambodia used to be French protectorate for a long time. Some decades ago French was still the second most spoken language here. And Sihanok of course is the former king of Cambodia.

The main reason why you find many empty and unfinished buildings in Shihanoukville Cambodia is that two of Chinese main developers notably Evergrande and Country Garden went bankrupt and hence run out of liquid assets to finance further development owing respectively $300 and $205 billion dollars in debt. Thank you very much and enjoy your day 😊😊

Big fan of you Ken, but have to say bit disappointed about the video. Title is about Sihanoukville and then only 20 minutes of 45 minutes is about Sihanoukville. And you only explore the Chinese areas and don't visit places like Otres or city center where locals and westerns hang out. Also yes, around 400 unfinished buildings and around 150 completed but empty buildings in beginning of 2024. Since then already 40 unfinished buildings have been continued, and another 30 in the pipeline to be continued later this year. Also not to forget that over 2000 new buildings built in last 8 years.
