There is a bright side to that, though. Compare the situation in Japan with the situation in China. Many people who travel to Japan are complete idiots who make nuisances of themselves. Many are Instagram/KZbin divas who are convinced that, as 'influencers', they have special rights. Those who go to China are those who actually want to go there to see China, who are genuinely interested in the country. They're far less likely to make nuisances of themselves.

The government is strict, but they do deliver results and people are overall satisfied with how the country keeps growing. There's just not much incentive for the moment to have an anti-government protests in contrast to western countries tbh, but they do have protests that complains about some law/incidents, just not the anti-government kind of protest as the average western person would experience in their countries.

i am from taiwan and have travelled 40+ countries including 50+ chinese cities, 20+ us cities, 15 EU cities, and many more. china is definitely the best country to travel to. and china just about gets all A in my book in terms of travelling and living. however i think ccp protects its citizens too much. chinese state news always report positive sides of the world and other countries. i just didnt see chinese state news outlets hv ever bad mouth any country. they dont deliberately twist or sensationalize news reporting either. so chinese news are kinda boring to watch... i suppose that's why average chinese preserve very innocent sometimes naive world view. hence chinese are very accepting anything foreign and are very curious and super welcoming of foreigners regardless where they come from. unfortunately some foreign expats living in china do take advantages of chinese hospitality. and however the real world is like a jungle. many countries in the world are not friendly and hv serious political bias. and some cultures are just more aggressive, or cold, or racist, or always think to take advantages of you. that's the way it is... i suppose thats why many chinese international students and chinese expats become very patriotic after they return from foreign countries. and some of these chinese were china haters before they had foreign visit experience....LMAO...

I hate the Chinese government not telling the truth about other countries' dark side. For example they made the end of slavery in America sounded as nobile as the librating Tebit slaves by Chinese government. Now some of the Chinese government officials are so brain-washed, that they made those 731 textbooks. I learned the hardest way that America and China are not the same, not on the same moral ground at all. The bad people in power in China are just stupid, but the bad people in America are dark and bloody. China needs to teach the real history of American history, otherwise, China will be like today's Middle East.

To get the negative out of the way first, there is a bit of a learning curve with China. A lot of things just work differently and you're going to have to figure it out fairly quickly if you want to function there at all. If you're going to China on holiday, a lot of hotels will actually help you sort things out because they understand that certain things might be a challenge. For example, they'll help you book train tickets, reserve tickets for museums, theatres and historical sites, etc. Admittedly, that is one reason why I prefer Hong Kong and Macau because they're easier to understand. That, and Taiwan -- but that risks a political argument that I'm not in the mood for. Even though I have AliPay and know how to use it, I don't like it. The QR codes, etc. are a faff. I'd rather just pay cash or contactless. Other than those minor annoyances, China's a great country. The people are generally wonderful. It's very safe there. Things can be a bit uneven, but it's not like Europe or North America where everything's just falling apart. Living in Europe, I appreciate just how light-touch things in China actually are. Here, every aspect of life is highly regulated and governments want nothing more than to find any excuse to fine people for the most absurd trivialities. In China, so long as you're not causing problems or being breathtakingly stupid, you're free to get on with your life. China is, in the end, a highly functional country that plays by its own rules. It's not for everyone. That's fine, people are free to like what they like and dislike what they dislike. China does have its quirks and pitfalls, but if you're willing to work around that, there's far more good than bad.

Not all the time. How to explain what you see is very important, and it is depend on how much the truth you know about that matter. The same thing is sill happening. Through out the decades how many Chinese students (including Taiwan and Hongkong) in "crucial" fields died in America before they even had a chance to finish their school? The cruilty is still the same, but how many people really understand the cause of their death?

@@zarif_cho Best ad, lol, As a chinese, use openclash with tailscale is better and cheaper.
Every country in reality, is not too much different from one another, with both good and bad things. It's the politicians and the ruling Govt that like to do their own biased propaganda for whatever reason and agenda, out of insecurity or tit-for-tat maybe. The man (or woman) -in-the-street of each and every country just go about their everyday life. China has since last year started opening up with visa free extended to more countries and now up to 30 days for some, so it's the best time to go there and see for yourself while you can since It's not permanent but more like on a trial basis. With 5 cities you've visited and probably just one natural landscape, you've barely scratched even 0.01% of the usual places that the locals usually visit (they know where's the most breathtaking landscapes and hidden gems). I've been in and out of China since 2005 right after my graduation and though I've been to the usual provinces with a lot of beautiful scenery and exotic culture and ethnicities such as Yunnan, Xinjiang, Dongbei region, Inner Mongolia, Tibet among other places, I still feel there are still many places I've yet explore. Because China is very huge. While China may be known in the US as 4th largest, by land area (not counting the waters), it's either the 2nd or 3rd largest, so there are indeed many places to cover. Once you are mentally ready for China (the huge no of domestic tourists and the cacophony and pushing and shoving that comes with so much people, the cultural differences), then you can turn off the negatives and start to immerse yourself into the positives (like the diverse landscapes, cultures, peoples, cuisines, traditional architecture across the country etc), then you will be able to appreciate China for what it is a little better.

Interesting insight, thanks for sharing. Do you live in China now?
It is really surprising how The West's narrative on China is crumbling with all these kind of travel videos coming from people of the West! If only this happened sooner with countries like Iran, etc.
