ADDED BY POPULAR REQUEST... You can now right-click an uncharged relay to retrieve the compass that you've put in, as long as you're not holding an End Crystal (which would charge the relay). If you've already downloaded the datapack, go download it again to get this update!

Really cool implementation! I also took a stab at creating a datapack, though yours is definitely much more polished. Mine also has an arrow on top, though it's implemented with a re-textured compass, so if you place a compass for another dimension in, the arrow spins around randomly.
@conure51211 ай бұрын
Ohh that's a cool approach! And crazy that we both thought of the arrow thing haha

Very cool, I've just seen Kenadian-s video and the only thing weird about his idea was the lodestone being so firmly tied to a single compass. Your approach to the end relay is the same I initially thought would be the most fitting for vanilla minecraft. It would be even better if you could remove the compass by right clicking a non-charged end relay, and also to give it 4 levels of charge. That way it would basically function as a jukebox for adding and removing the compass, except of course instead of playing music it links to a lodestone and spins the arrow. And it would also function the same as the respawn anchor but instead of setting your spawn, it teleports you. That would make it slightly more intuitive and tie it in with existing features. Still I'm amazed how you were able to implement this so fast and perfectly functioning as a datapack. Amazing video as well, good quality and great commentary. As usual 1 out of every 500 times the youtube recommended does not disappoint.

cool idea for it - you can charge it up with up to 4 end crylstals so your able to right click to teleport with it up to 4 times
@conure51211 ай бұрын
Yeah that could work! I implemented it exactly the way Kenadian showed it (in terms of charges at least) but hypothetically more charges could reasonably be added

I hope that if it gets added, it has the arrow on top. You could make some cool displays with redstone and hoppers which insert different compasses for the relay needle to point in a specific direction.

@Gameatronic900011 ай бұрын
wait, 1 feature that was mentioned in the original video that was great, was these being able to be re-crystaled via hopper. it wasn't mentioned, but i'd assume since its a pile of display entities it might be a bit more complicated to allow it to interact with adjacent hoppers in that manner.
@conure51211 ай бұрын
Yeah, I did actually consider that, and yes, it's really really difficult with datapack capabilities lol. The updating behavior of redstone falls so far outside the reach of commands that I'd have to do something ridiculous (and probably add some ticking commands, ugh) in order to get it working.
@Gameatronic900011 ай бұрын
@@conure512 i had a feeling it might require some commands to check the data of the adjacent blocks within tick to do it. even with my limited knowledge of datapacks i feel i could figure it out in a day or two, but it feels like one of those, easy enough to write, incredibly hard to optimize, kind of solutions with code i'd have to guess.
@conure51211 ай бұрын
@@Gameatronic9000 Exactly, to actually get it working wouldn't be that bad, but to make it "worth it" in terms of internal efficiency is the super tricky part.
@Gameatronic900011 ай бұрын
@@conure512 honestly, datapacks are REALLY COOL! but knowing what i know about coding in general, there will always be that part of me screaming to just write it up in java as a mod cause commands and datapacks are interpreted code being run ontop of a java VM. but i know for a fact that writing the code directly will always be far more complicated due to the smoothing out thta kind of interpreted code allows. this really is just the curse of 'knowing too much for my own good' isn't it?
@conure51211 ай бұрын
@@Gameatronic9000 The reason I always hesitate with mods is the idea of universal usability. A datapack requires absolutely no compliance from the client, only the server needs to have it - and it can be a 100% vanilla server too! Ease of Use is a huge consideration. The one caveat is if the pack requires a resource pack (like this one does), but even then, that can be provided by the server after with a bit of configuring - again, the client doesn't need to worry about it at all. Mods, on the other hand, almost always require the client and server to match up what mods they have installed, and they require special non-vanilla servers in order to run. Kind of a big hassle.

I like Ken's crafting recipe better, but it would be cool if you could charge it multiple times like the anchor
@MarasiTemple11 ай бұрын
But why? It's not made to respawn to the thing, so if you want to use it, you're also able to refill it. So there is no real need for it, and i feel like multiple charges and with that the ability to make a group able to teleport to the same location all at the same time could break things.

Kenadian's suggestion was Obsidian, Popped Chorus Fruit, and a Lodestone Compass. I just replaced the compass with an Eye of Ender. Since this is just a concept/suggestion I suppose anyone could change it to require netherite lol I suppose there technically is a netherite requirement already though, because using the relay requires a Lodestone, which requires netherite to craft!
