Well times were different back then. I was about 12 when this aired and yea I was laughing my ass off but back then I didn’t understand the ramifications this had on Black women. I’m in my 30s now and have a new perspective of what is right in media and what is wrong. I’ve think we’ve all come to better understanding of how we should be represented in media. Think of what the minstrel era did to the Black community, people learned over time that portraying Black people as caricatures was inappropriate and so they stopped even though it was a long haul before it was eventually wiped from Hollywood. This portrayal of Black women still happened today and is just as offensive as the minstrel era but the sad part is it’s our own people doing it which makes it in the eyes of YT people seem like it’s OK.

This is black people not understanding white culture. THEY think it’s funny. And they are trying to market shows/movies to THEM. I remember in high school we had cross dress day. Where girls dress like guys and vice versa. NO black men dressed like a girl but like 10 white kids (the small few we had) dressed up and was dying laughing because they thought it was a joke. Have you ever heard of white boy fun? Where they slap each others penises, or say gay things to eachother or do gay things to as a joke. It’s just what they find funny. So the dress thing isn’t funny to black people but a lot of white people find it hilarious and since white people are the bigger MARKET (66%) they will keep doing it because that will make more money. White comedians (Robin Williams, Jim Carey, etc.) do it too.

This was really bad. I don’t remember seeing this back in the day. We didn’t need another Shenaynay and Wanda. They were teenagers emulating what they saw adult comedians doing during that era. Not taking up for them. There was nothing innocent about this clip at all. So they were basically making fun of black women who they knew. Maybe even their family members. 😢 Funny how neither of them have children with black women. (Correct me if I’m wrong). I believe all of Nick’s children are with biracial women. (Yes, black but light skinned).

This is far less funny after you realize that the writers room for this show was all white men. Not to mention the negative stereotypes it must’ve instilled in the minds of young impressionable children of all races, some of whom had little to no interactions with black people outside of these television shows. Yeah, on this show and Amanda Show, the characters they wrote for Black actors were plain caricaturish and problematic. Not to mention they often used the Black actors for the slapstick gags some of which involved being spit on. It's really tough having to see this through adult eyes.

Not a fan of it, tho making fun of Black (and ww, but they're not the focus here) women it has deep roots in comedy. I can recall comedian Flip Wilson doing this in the 70s and can recall old tv shows where white men did similar (Milton Berle, that movie Some like it hot).

It's interesting because when I was a child in the 90s the styling of the characters in this sketch reminded me of the girls that ran my afterschool program - The very gelled hair and long nails - and they were all so fun and nice so seeing this I was reminded of them for that reason even when they didn't act anything like this. Looking at it critically now as an adult I can see the issues black women would have with this and why it would offend them so much.
