Hearing Ken go into the specifics of the keys is just so damn cool to me. Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places but I haven't found a lot of in depth talk about how the keyboards have been mixed into a full on rock/metal track, and hearing Ken Andrews of all people dive into the topic is such an ideal combination. On a side note, maybe it's just me but I feel like the On My Teeth instrumental transitions seamlessly into the Distorted Fields outro.

Incredibly complex mix, incredible stuff man. Love it. One thing I'm noticing is how all of the tracks you have for the guitars and keyboards are all so "brickwalled" off level wise. At least they look that way on the meters.
@KenAndrewsMusic3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that’s normal for guitars with a lot of distortion. Heavy distortion will flatline your waveform faster than heavy compression. Keyboards are also fairly distorted and mangled on this song, so yes, not a whole lot of dynamics in the individual tracks for this song, but that’s the vibe here. Everyone on 11 for the whole thing!

So you’d give the “thumbs up” on quad tracking the rhythm guitars? I know some producers/mixers hate it, but I’ve always thought it sounded great. When planning the 4, are you planning two of them slightly more inward than the other two that are hard panned, or just all 4 hard panned?
@KenAndrewsMusic3 жыл бұрын
On this song I’m pretty sure all 4 were hard panned but that’s not a rule I use. I will audition different pannings and see what feels good. Often it’s more about how it’s affecting the other instruments.
@nickemacio97943 жыл бұрын
@@KenAndrewsMusic thank you for the reply, sir. I would also like to inquire on this as well- are you doing any kind of “widening” with the guitars as far as using a stereo imager, or it is just hard panned left and right and then maybe a little “room” and EQ on a bus? I’d really be interested to know about this albums guitars and the JEW song “pass the baby” toward the end. Thanks for doing these!
@us3r113 жыл бұрын
So valuable. The mix is so good. But, man, when there's only one person making music - I can never get so much complexity in one song just by myself... Well.. I hope to get someone involved, I guess.
@nedim_guitar3 жыл бұрын
Find people online to work with. People who are into similar music. Pass ideas forward and back, and work out parts together. I happened to get in touch with a guy by chance, and his recordings really made my at the time mediocre song into a really good one! He came up with the chorus, bridge and outro, he put in guitars and synths that sound great and fit the song very well. It's worth a shot. I mean, I don't know if I could do that for you, or anyone, but I do know that when I'm listening to music, especially for the first time, I have a feeling and a sense of where it could, or even should go.

I would love to hear this song with just vocals, bass, drums and guitar. But I appreciate all the work that went into the added sounds. Stupid question: Doesn't it get to a point where you can't fit everything in? I feel like all those sounds get buried in the mix just to let the actual song breathe. No?
@DennisAlvey3 жыл бұрын
@@jackie-boy-floyd Good point. I see that.
@KenAndrewsMusic3 жыл бұрын
Yes, sometimes not every sound can be independently appreciated, for sure. Rather they play a more supportive role. All the synths hitting the same power chord guitars is a good example of how keys can support and make the guitars appear more intense with actually noticing them on their own.

This is really cool of you to share tons of brilliant info, but the ken burns zoom effect on every shot is incredibly distracting for in-depth videos, trying to check out what you're doing in Pro Tools and focus on the info you're actually sharing.
@KenAndrewsMusic3 жыл бұрын
agreed for the shots of me. i turned on auto zooming and I don't like it for those shots. won't do that again. but for the PT shots I actually think its really helpful to give context and I think the zooming is helpful there. There might be a few where the zoom is too much or too fast, but overall I think it actually helps to focus the viewer on what I'm talking about. probably went a little overboard on this episode though. thanks for the critique.
