Dr. Kendall Wyatt explains a simplified way to get started understanding electrolytes imbalances and the associated lab values. You can use this video to get the gist of hypermagnesemia and hypomagnesemia or as a jump off point for a deeper understanding.

Chloride gets skipped? great video though, thanks a lot, i've actually watched it twice.

Chloride reached out with a sassy email blaming me for discriminating... They have the same claim against all medical personnel who say “normal saline” instead of 0.9% sodium chloride. In remediation here’s a blurb: For high level overview of chloride: - remember the normal 95-105 - it’s not very independent, it typically NEVER changes all on its own (the imbalances happen with other electrolytes) - low chloride is most commonly seen with 1. vomiting 2. Diuretic use - high chloride is seen in 1. Dehydration 2. Renal failure 3. Iatrogenic use of normal saline

11 months later I realized you made me say normal saline after dissing on people who say normal saline. Well played sir.

This is just the kind of info I was looking for! I needed something that could tie the symptoms together and make sense of them so they would be easier to remember (or at least, more logical and thus easier to remember). You broke things down into the basics and now remembering the lab values (because you pointed out you can list them from smallest to greatest), major functions of each each electrolyte, and symptoms of hypo/hyper is much easier. I will definitely watch more of your videos as I study. Thanks!

Great video! Love the visuals and yes, picmonics is a good study tool with humor. I find even better because I remember more when I'm laughing or smiling. Drinking from your cup is a good reminder that we all need to keep hydrated. Appreciate the reminder and thank you for all the short cuts to remembering lab values.

Thank you so much for this video! I've been trying to memorize these for weeks with various videos and charts and such, with only a little progress. Although mnemonics and visuals are super helpful, I need to have a general idea of the what/why/how behind what I'm memorizing. You blended the memory visual with the general actions of each electrolyte so perfectly that it finally stuck for me. Thank you!!!

You are a gifted teacher and have a great personality and you are so kind to share the information and break it down to help people understand. And you’re funny too in a natural way. Thank you for sharing this. I wish I had gone to nursing school. My husband is 59 and he’s worked hard construction his whole life. He’s known for being the person who sweats more than anybody on the job site. He normally can take it but now he’s so tired in the last three weeks. I can tell there’s something wrong with him. It seems he has depleted his electrolytes. He has always gotten really bad muscle cramps in his hands legs and feet especially in the summer. But now he’s so tired he can hardly do anything. This is the first time I’ve seen him like this in 37 years. He sweats through four or five shirts a day and through his shorts ...sweat pools in his shoes. I’ve been giving him bananas raisins and I bought supplements trying to reach 3000 to 4700 mg of potassium a day. Plus I gave him a magnesium supplement but it’s not working he’s getting even more tired. I’m wondering if he’s deficient in calcium. I know I need to take him to the doctor.

Great video! Thank you for systematizing this for me. I was really having a hard time understanding and remembering it before I listened to your lecture. Also, and easy way to remember what's in the ECF and what's in ICF is to memorize "salty banana": K in, Na out.

Electrolyte imbalance, basically, is when your potassium level is in the 1 range. Linked to eating disorders, in particular anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Consequence is heart failure and death. Remedy is hospitalization in ER with potassium IV and oral solution during 5 days minimum. 2 month recovery period is required.
