I understand this person was injured, but I was heavily discouraged from doing oji-waza on my san dan because "the judges aren't really looking for it."

I have heard people say that before, but I do not agree with it. I think that 3-dan level candidates should be able to demonstrate Oji-waza if the opportunity is there.

@@TheKendoShow Two of my sempai were on my jury, so it was probably better to follow their advice while they were grading me, but good to know its not a standard.
